Consonant sounds are determined by:

 the position of the tongue, lips, and teeth


 the way air is released
 the use of or absence of voice

• All vowel sounds are voiced.


• The tongue does not touch other parts of the mouth, teeth or lips.
• The vowel sounds differ by:
• the distance between the lips
• the shape of the lips
• the length of time the sound is produced

Sentence Stress

• Apply stress on words that carry meaning, such as:


• Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, negative auxiliaries (e.g.
don’t, won’t, wouldn’t)
• Do not apply stress on words that help complete the sentences,
such as:
• Prepositions, articles, conjunctions, auxiliary verbs (e.g. be,
do, have)
