Introduction

Waste management is an important requirement for ecologically sustainable

development in many countries. It has become one such issue in today’s society. The

absence of efficient waste management has caused serious environmental problems

and cost issues. Therefore, waste should be disposed and treated properly to reduce

environmental impact.

Moreover, waste management services are becoming an important market, for

which the waste collection process is a critical aspect for the service providers. The

main goals of these services are to reduce waste production, to ensure that wastes are

properly disposed, to recycle and to re-use disposed products.

To achieve these goals, regulations and taxes are being implemented to favor

virtuous behaviors. In particular, the Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Waste

Management Act of 2000 declares the policy of the state in adopting Comprehensive

Solid Waste Management which deals with waste characterization and segregation,

source reduction, proper waste collection and transfer, recycling program, and

composting.

In the continued strive for excellence in LSPU community; this paper proposes

an innovated method to improve the quality of segregation. The Smart Waste

Management System: Automated Waste Sorting Receptacle is an electronic

enhancement of the existing trash bins. This device has two basic functions: 1) to

design a trash bin that can sense and 2) segregate its own trash without external

control.
