The Glasgow 14U softball team was in Sidney for
the MonDak League championship and it was the
Glasgow Scotties taking the title, beating Sidney
12-3 on Saturday. Team members were awarded

Just Sayin’.....
Here’s a thought provoking thought,
maybe.
I read Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged
and The Fountainhead way back in the
day when I was almost a hippie. They were
the two most popular books for the young people to read.
Most of us/them didn’t understand a word that was written
but it was fun to say “Who is John Galt” while sitting around
a campfire, smoking. Or while sitting around a smoking
campfire. Yikes! Get to the pernt!
The pernt, as Mike Stebleton likes to say, is do we do
things simply because we want to do things or do we do
things to make others think better of us?
Do we kowtow to public scrutiny on certain controversial
issues or do we come completely clean and voice our own
opinions gleaned from our own brain? We have the ability to
hold our very own opinions and thoughts don’t we?
Or are we sheep, always following some leader or peer
pressure or parental pressure or societal pressure of anti-
social medial pressure?
Are we afraid to voice our own opinions? I hear ya.
But are you yessing because you are afraid what others may
think of you or are you yessing that you are the one percent
of humans who are not afraid to speak up, public opinion be
damned!
Dr. House says he doesn’t take patient histories because
“everybody lies.” Then he goes right on to prove his thought.
His students/colleagues look at him askancely (I just made up
a word!) and say, “not always.”
Let’s take a look at peer pressure in the fifth grade. Yikes!
How well we remember stuff! Were you a sheep or were
you your own person? Were you consciously afraid of not
following those in your class who voice a different opinion
than the one you had in your noggin? Or were you, like
me, always the one who ran contrary to public opinion and
voiced my/your own thoughts without feelings of terror that
the “elite” kids wouldn’t like you? I didn’t give a big wuuup if
they did or not.
There were times when my thoughts and deeds made me
think of what my family may be thinking about my actions or
words but for the most part I really didn’t care much.
I would not have been a good “Yes man” for President
Trump.
Having not gone to college I wonder if peer pressure
is tougher there than in high school? Today’s institutes of
higher learning seem to have eliminated the personal thought
processes students used to have. I feel there is way too much
anti-social media. People don’t know how to communicate
with others in a verbal sort of manner. They communicate
with printed words on an “I-Something. Young people today
don’t have a clue of the days before electronic communication.
There’s no room anywhere for individual thoughts
or opinions. Most young folks are swayed by the thoughts,
actions and opinions (mostly mis-guided!) of pop stars
or movie people. They take those thoughts that come over
their telecommunication device and use them as their own
without giving much thought to what they themselves are
thinking. It’s fine as long their fave star thinks it’s fine. You go
along with their thoughts for fear you might insult the star
(if by a remote chance the star will ever deem it necessary to
investigate your thoughts.)
Howard Hughes was considered eccentric, weird, an
oddball because he had his own thoughts and opinions. Most
of his ideas were put to good use in products for the public.
CHARLES mANSON HAD HIS OWN....(dAMMED
CAPS LOCK KEY) his own manical ideas and convoluted
thought processes. He followed no one but had several kooks
who followed him....right to the hoosegow I might add. None
of his ideas and opinions were of use to anyone.
I guess it’s best that you make up your own mind if you
want to be a follower hoping to curry favor from others or if
you want to use your very own brain to make others think
highly of you.
