1. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

When choosing songs as authentic material for English learning activities, there are a
number of things that the teacher needs to consider. First, the teacher needs to access various
songs and download them easily. Websites like Youtube or AZLyrics and applications such as
Joox or Spotify are practical choices that teachers can try when searching for songs and their
lyrics. Second, the instructor needs to study the syllabus and look for topics / sessions that allow
it to be discussed using songs. For example, if there is one topic about pets, Ben's song sung by
Michael Jackson can be used because the song tells about rats as pets. Teachers can also learn
facts, lyrics and interpretations of songs by searching for information on the Internet, such as the
Wikipedia website or Songfacts. Third, the teacher needs to choose songs that are appropriate to
the student's level. Song speed, the complexity of the lyrics, song content, and language style are
things that generally influence teacher decisions. For example, if the instructor teaches English
classes for children, the selected song should be a simple song and contains a message that fits
their age. Fourth, teachers need to design communicative and interesting activities for students.
Students can express songs through movement, discuss the meaning of songs from a cross-
cultural perspective, create their own version of the lyrics, etc.

To describe a variety of activities that can be carried out using songs continuously, one
song will be used as an example. The song is titled "Champion" and sung by David Kawika
Kahiapo. The song tells the story of someone who always tries hard to do his best even though
there are various challenges and some people doubt he will succeed. The song "Champion" can
be accessed on the American English website (www.americanenglish.state.gov) for free. The
website provides a variety of songs that can be downloaded easily and each song is accompanied
by a number of choices of language learning activities. Teachers can save a lot of time by
utilizing existing activities, but teachers can certainly be self-creative if needed.

“Ed Sheeran- Perfect

I found a love for me

Darling just dive right in
And follow my lead
Well I found a girl beautiful and sweet
I never knew you were the someone waiting for me
'Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowing what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own
And in your eyes you're holding mine
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight
Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I'll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we're so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we'll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl, I'll be your man
I see my future in your eyes

2. Students question how to find detailed information and conclusions from the song

This song tells the story of his love story Ed Sheeran with the woman he has been dating
since high school named Cherry Seaborn. Many of the song's lyrics express the deep love of Ed
Sheeran for Cherry.
In the song there is a hidden message delivered by Ed Sheeran for his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn
that is very sweet and makes you all melt especially girls, definitely want to hear these words
from your guy.
In the song a lot tells the story of Ed Sheeran's love with Cherry such as "Barefoot on the grass,
listening to our favorite song", the lyrics have a precious memory that is when Ed Sheeran and
Cherry were in Ibiza and were listening to their favorite song namely March Madness Future,
and at that time they were not wearing shoes, and that was a pleasant thing, said Ed Sheeran.
Besides that in the lyrics there is also a dream from Ed Sheeran, "She shares my dreams, I hope
that someday I will share her home" which means she dreams of being the same as me, I hope
someday I can get one house and "To carry love to carry children of our own "which means Tuk
brings love, to bring our own children. From the lyrics, Ed Sheeran conveyed his wish to his
beloved woman Cherry to be able to become a family and have children that they would later
raise up together.
Then Ed Sheeran also gave Cherry nostalgia when they were still like children when they fell in
love, but their love was present and against all the obstacles they faced and together promised to
be together later. That is reflected in the lyrics, namely
3. Individually students compare messages contained in several songs that are read / heard
You are the Reason
There goes my heart beating
'Cause you are the reason
I'm losing my sleep
Please come back now
There goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I'm still breathing
I'm hopeless now
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, 'cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
There goes my hand shaking
And you are the reason
My heart keeps bleeding
I need you now
If I could turn back the clock
I'd make sure the light defeated the dark
I'd spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe
And I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken

Message of song

Perfect
Like the news circulating lately, Ed Sheeran announces that he and Cherry Seaborn are
engaged. Cherry is not a stranger in Ed's life. Ed and Cherry have known each other since high
school. However, the Shape of You singer was still shy about expressing her feelings.

You are the Reason

Quoting from Capitolrecords.com, this song written by Scotts with Jon Maguire and
Corey James Sanders,
"Initially, it was about something completely different from what is now. Originally written from
a fragile place in an anxiety that was unknown, this song would originally be titled "Without A
Reason". But as we continue writing, we realize how many couples are going through difficult
times but they persist, because the love they basically feel for others, will put everything aside. "
