INTRODUCTION
Greetings, Vanakkam and Salam Perpaduan,
Firstly, we would like to extend our heart-felt gratitude to you for the time spent reading this
proposal.
Kalaichaaral is an Indian Performing Arts charity concert that aims to collect funds for the
underprivileged of society. This event is a collaborative project between Tamil Language Society
(TLSUM) of University of Malaya and Hindu Society of University of Malaya (HiSUM) and aims to
serve as a platform for both student bodies to give back to society.
This event also acts as an avenue for undergraduates of various races to show their talents in this
area of Arts thus promoting an appreciation of Malaysia and Her diversity. It also provides
honoured members of society with the opportunity to interact with talented undergraduates as
well as to scout for new talents in the field. In previous years, the reception of this event has
been highly encouraging, garnering support from various stakeholders of society and we hope to
amplify the scale of this event with the help of your company.

OBJECTIVES OF KALAICHAARAL 2.0

The objectives of Kalaichaaral 2.0 are:

Malaysia Lysosomal Diseases Association (MLDA) and SJK (T) St. Leonard.
2. To create an awareness among the society about rare diseases.
3. To promote Indian and Hindu Cultural Arts to undergraduates so that

4. To intensify networking between honoured members of society with

undergraduates and as such, providing undergraduates with much needed exposure with

5. To grant opportunities for students to gain experience in organizing events.
6. To provide an avenue for students to show their talents and abilities.

Malaysia Lysosomal Diseases Association

Malaysia Lysosomal Diseases Association (MLDA) is a non-profit organization to advocate for
patients’ right and educate general people about various life threatening lysosomal storage
diseases (LSD). Eight LSD families had met up on 1 April 2011 and decided it was no joke if a
sustainable medical system is not in place before getting a call from the world beyond. There and
then that all agreed to form this association.
LSD are caused by a lack of enzymes that normally eliminate unwanted substances in the
cells of the body. The enzymes are found in sac, like structures in cells called lysosomes.
Lysosomes act as the “recycling center” of each cell, breaking down unwanted material into
simple products for the cell to use to build new material. The lack of certain enzymes causes a
buildup of the substance that the enzyme would normally eliminate and deposits accumulate in
many cells of the body. Abnormal storage causes inefficient functioning and damage of the
body’s cells which can lead to serious health problems. There are about 50 different types of LSD
diseases and mostly affect children and they often die at a young and unpredictable age, many
within a few months or years of birth.
Due to the complexity of LSD, patients will require care provided by health care
professionals from multiple disciplines and support from various agencies. Access to such medical
care and services are hard to come for many LSD patients, causing undue suffering and despair.
The symptoms of lysosomal storage disease vary, depending on the particular disorder and other
variables like the age of onset and can be mild to severe. They can include developmental delay,
regression, movement disorders, seizures, dementia, deafness and blindness.
KALAICHAARAL 2.0
Some people with LSD have enlarged livers (hepatomegaly) and enlarged spleens (splenomegaly),
pulmonary and cardiac problems as well as bones that grow abnormally. There are no cures for
most of the LSD and treatment is mostly symptomatic. However, bone marrow transplantation
and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) have been tried with some success in some cases.
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil)

St. Leonard
SJK (T) Ladang St. Leonard or its acronym, SJK (T) Ladang St. Leonard, is a Tamil national type
school located at Batu 2, Jalan Pantai, Taman Utama Pd, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan Darul
Khusus which was established in 1937. Currently the school consist of 11 teachers and 47
students where 20 students are coming from a nearby orphanage home. Whereas the remaining
of the students are from nearby housing areas and these areas consist of around 200 Indian
families.
Mr.Muniandy, the headmaster of SJK (T) Ladang St. Leonard is taking initiative to upgrade the
school to a better level so that the students will have a conducive and well equipped environment
for their learning. The major problem the school is facing is, they do not have sufficient funds and
moral support from public and parents of the students to improve the condition of the school as
well as students’ academic performance. Their library and science laboratory are under
renovation and they need volunteers to set up these places and also funds to buy the necessity
books and equipment. This school’s current needs are projector, laminating machine, volunteers
for mural art painting for their newly renovated school building and also motivational talks for
students and parents.
