ZIFF MediaLab
Come to the MediaLab and have fun. New media can let you experience what is not there at all.
You step from one pavement to the next, you know they are only a few centimeters high, but
because of your Virtual Reality glasses, it looks like you have to step over an abyss. Almost
nobody can manage that without teetering or screaming. Learn how to create media like video,
animation and interactive new media. Come and enjoy! For all ages from 7-up.

What can you do in the Media Lab?
You learn to create video's. You learn animation. There are beautiful apps with which you can
create interactive productions and learn the basics of digital thinking /creating. You learn that you
can manipulate images and that you yourself are often fooled. That is why there will be tinkering,
cutting and coloring and there are installations and a number of tablets that children can use
immediately.

Why is this important? Because film/animation (visual language) is everywhere and often is the
language used to communicate online and on mobile screens. As well as on other platforms, such
as TV, YouTube, video-on-demand like Netflix and of course on social media.

We show new developments. New media can let you experience what is not there at all. You step
from one pavement to the next, you know they are only a few centimeters high, but because of
your Virtual Reality glasses, it looks like you have to step over an abyss. Almost nobody can
manage that without teetering or screaming. It is an intense experience to notice how these new
media technologies impact your brain. Knowledge that you can only gain by experiencing it
yourself.

We show children that you can project an image onto normal reality (Augmented Reality). By
placing computers into ordinary things, they become "smart", like self-driving cars. In the Media
Lab, you can command the computer to "act" without using a keyboard or console. You can even
make a music clip by just dancing.

The Media Lab will therefore be a playful mix of the many ways to make images and sound
(media productions), the new technology that helps with this, and the media technology which
leads to entirely new types of media productions. Children and young people, curious as they are,
get to work immediately.

The first experience will be LEAP Experience VR

Our installation, LEAP 2.0 features 5 tiles. While these tiles may look quite ordinary,
everything changes when you're transported to the virtual world. There, these tiles are
no longer tiles, but rather 50 metres high pillars in a daunting environment where
nothing is what it seems. With the help of a VR headset you will see, move and feel in a
whole new environment. It will mimic the real world with a twist. Are you afraid and will
your legs shiver? Or do you dare to take the leap?

The second experience is Beat Saber

Beat Saber is a unique VR rhythm game, where your goal is to slash the beats
(represented by small cubes) as they are coming at you. Every beat indicates which hand
you need to use and also the direction you need to match. All the music is composed to
perfectly fit the hand made levels. The goal is to make players dance, while cutting all the
cubes and avoiding obstacles. Each cut is strongly supported by great sound and visual
effects to emphasize the rhythm.

Professor Fimon is an eminent university professor, producer, drama writer and director with an admirably rich career.
He graduated from the Belgrade Drama School and won his Master’s degree at the Belgrade Faculty of Philology –
Sociology of Literature department. Following scientific research in Paris (Cultural Centre George Pompidou) and
London (British Film Institute), he completed his PhD with thesis on Possibilities of filming a novel. He carried out post
PhD researches in Paris (economics of culture), Moscow (East-European cinema), Seoul (cinematic language),
London (literature and cinema), and Barcelona (media education).

Professor Fimon is also known to be a producer, director and associate of films and TV projects, writer and director of
various theatre plays, author of several books and essays (film history an theory, sociology of arts, cultural economics
and economics of arts), and author of many workshops (Looking at Cinema, Relationship between Cinema et
Literature, South East European Cinema, Reading Emir Kusturica, Children’s Cinema Education, Stage and Screen
Acting etc).

For more than thirty years Professor Fimon is very active member of FICC, CIFEJ, CILECT and a few other
international film associations and organizations. He was a full time professor at the Academy of Drama Arts in
Cetigne, AFA, Art Academy in Belgrade, European Film Academy ESRA in Paris, USAC in Turin. He has also been a
visiting professor at London University with many assignments at several world-wide important universities (Cairo,
Colombo, Barcelona, Istanbul, Moscow, Nairobi, Paris, Prague, Sarajevo, Seoul, Turin, Zurich). Additionally, he has
been internationally active as Executive director of the International Festival of Alternative Theatre, Founder and
director of the first Ethnic Theatre in London, and the Independent children film school in Montenegro, a member
and/or jury president of many international film festival (most recently in Cottbus, Colombo, Bangalore, Isfahan,
Hyderabad, Mumbai, Palm Springs, Fribourg, Sao Paolo, Tehran, Kharkov, Istanbul, Bucharest, Kathmandu...).
Furthermore, he has been the Executive director of the Serbian Film Centre and president of the Serbian Association
of Film Societies.

Professor Fimon is author and instructor of “Film in Schools, an approved CIFEJ project, accepted by more sixty
member’s countries and already partly realised in Iran, India, Romania, Montenegro etc. He was also cofounder and
director of the SEE A PARIS, International film festival of South East European countries, which is happening every
year in the second week of Mai in Paris. From December 2017, he is elected Vice President of CIFEJ - International
Centre of Films for Children and Young People (Centre international du film pour l’enfance et la jeunesse).

Lizelle Bisschoff is a researcher and curator of African film. She holds a PhD in African cinema
from the University of Stirling in Scotland, in which she researched the role of women in
African film. She has published widely on sub-Saharan African cinema and regularly attends
African film festivals worldwide as speaker and jury member. She is currently a lecturer in Film
and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow, where she teaches African cinema and
continues her research on classic and contemporary African film.

Lecture 1: The geopolitics of African cinema: Then and now

African cinema is a decidedly post-colonial endeavour, which commenced when African

countries gained independence from the late 1950s onwards (with the exception of South
Africa and Egypt, which had different colonial histories than most other African countries, and
thus different trajectories of indigenous filmmaking). The notion of Third Cinema, a Latin
American film movement that started in the 1960s with the aim to subvert neo-colonialism and
capitalism in filmmaking, had a major influence on the early development of African cinema.
From the 2000s onwards African cinema has diversified into a multitude of new themes and
genres, with filmmaking industries developing in new and previously underrepresented
regions. In this session we will look at a brief overview of the historical development of African
cinema and existing theoretical and analytical approaches to studying African cinema, in order
to discuss the relevance and applicability of these approaches to contemporary African
cinema.

Lecture 2: The rise of East African cinema

Due to its historically small cinematic output in comparison to other regions, East African cinema is underrepresented in historical and analytical studies of African
cinema as a whole. However, indigenous filmmaking has indeed been emerging in East African countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, as well as
initiatives aimed at training young aspiring filmmakers and supporting the distribution and exhibition of local films. Today a range of innovative developments and
creative filmmaking trends can be observed in these countries, for example feature fiction films with stunning cinematography produced with sophisticated hi-tech
digital technology such as the Red One camera, primarily employing local crews and casts and often using non-professional actors trained through collaborative
workshops. These films mostly address relevant local themes and stories and explore the recent past and current socio-political situations. In this session we will
explore the emergence of feature fiction filmmaking in the previously underrepresented region of East Africa.

Lecture 3: African cinema and the digital revolution

The development of cinema has been intimately linked to technological progress. Technology has been particularly important for African cinema, as a symbol of
colonial authority, of modernity and progress, and as a catalyzing factor in transforming filmmaking from an expensive activity of cultural and educated elites, to an
activity attainable to wider audiences. The “digital revolution” has brought about new opportunities and challenges for African film production. The low-budget,
popular video-film industries have become an important part of popular creative production and consumption in Africa. This phenomenon emerged firstly in Ghana
and Nigeria (to become known as Nollywood in Nigeria) and the Nollywood model has subsequently been transposed to other, in particular Anglophone, African
countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. Technology plays a big part in the development of these industries, as it is the
accessibility and affordability of digital technology (in production and distribution) that has lowered barriers and made it possible for these countries to develop self-
sustainable, popular local film industries. While Nollywood films typically deal with narrative themes such as relationships, religion and witchcraft, and upwards
economic mobility, the expansion of the video-film industries also means a proliferation of themes and genres. In this session we will look at how new technologies
have brought new methods in the production, distribution and exhibition of African films.

Bongo Movies Coming of Age: Stories Matter

The aim is to look at stories that have changed how, and why, people respond to Bongo movies. The session features Tanzanian academics
who are also actively engaged in film production. The participating filmmakers will compare current works of their own with the first popular
Bongo movie, Girlfriend: filamu ya maisha na muziki (2003). We begin with a screening of Girlfriend, as the starting point for a self-reflexive
process that promises to shed light on how the Tanzanian film industry has evolved since 2003.

AMIL SHIVJI
Amil Shivji is a freelance filmmaker based in Tanzania, his homeland, and is a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). He has
written, directed and produced short fiction films addressing issues ranging from corruption and land grabbing to the growing class divide.
They have screened in prestigious festivals such as International Film Festival Rotterdam and FESPACO in Burkina Faso, and
winning People’s Choice, Best Director, Best Short film in various film festivals. His debut as a feature film producer Aisha (2015) was
screened in Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington, Tanga, Toronto, Singapore and has picked up four awards. His feature film directorial debut
T-Junction (2017) has won six awards. He is now in pre-production for, Vuta N’Kuvute – a feature love story set in 1950s Zanzibar. He is
currently doing his Masters at York University.

ISSA MBURA
Issa Mbura is a filmmaker and TV/Film Instructor based in Tanzania/East Africa. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Theatre Arts with a
particular focus on film. His research interests are on the impact of technological advancements on the transformation of Tanzanian video-film
industry. He is a Founder/Chief Executive Director of Dares Salaam based Saseni Media, a newly established media and arts production and
entertainment company. He is a recipient of the 2013 ZIFF Chairman’s/Bi Kidude award for the feature film “Crush” distributed widely in
Tanzania and on TV in African. He has produced PSAs, Short films and TV and Radio Programs independently and as he worked with
Mlimani TV and Radio as TV Coordinator, Director and Producer for the last 3 years. He has also published a book and articles on the
Tanzania film industry. His last film is the award winning Stolen Souls (2018).

VICENSIA SHULE
Dr. Vicensia Shule is a recycle-designer, filmmaker and a senior scholar at the Department of Creative Arts, University of Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania. She has researched and written extensively on matters related to film theatre, gender and women in Tanzania. She also works as
an independent producer/director for theatre, video film, radio and television productions. She began her career as a professional actor two
decades ago; as an independent film and television drama producer. She has researched and published extensively on matters related to the
arts, media, culture, and gender in Tanzania and Africa. Chungu (2011) was her first foray into Bongo movies and the film won a number of
awards at ZIFF 2012.

MARTIN MHANDO
Martin Mhando is Associate Professor of Media Studies and a research fellow with Murdoch University, Western Australia. He was director of
the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) from 2006 to 2016 and co-edits the Journal of African Cinemas. His areas of interest and
research include Screen Studies, Critical Journalism, Documentary Theory, Film Production Practice, African Cinema, Community Media,
World Cinema, Festival Studies and Indigenous Knowledge. Martin is also a filmmaker with award-winning feature and documentary film
credits. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award (ZIFF 2012) and of a Zeze Award (2006), in recognition of his contribution to the
arts in Tanzania. He is also winner of The Paul Robeson Award (2004) for the film Maangamizi, for Excellence in Independent Filmmaking.
Maangamizi was Tanzania’s and Africa’s first film to be selected for the Academy Awards in the Foreign Language Section in 2001. His other
films include Liyarn Ngarn, Mama Tumaini, and Yombayomba.

METTE HJORT
Mette Hjort is Chair Professor of Humanities and Dean of Arts at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Affiliate Professor of Scandinavian Studies
at the University of Washington, and Visiting Professor of Cultural Industries at the University of South Wales. Mette’s monographs include
Small Nation, Global Cinema (University of Minnesota Press, 2005). Her interest in the politics of talent development, including “twinning”
projects on a North/South basis, is reflected in the two-volume The Education of the Filmmaker (ed., Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and African
Cinema and Human Rights (co-ed., Indiana University Press, 2019). Mette holds an Honorary Doctorate in Transnational Cinema Studies
from the University of Aalborg. She has served on the Board of the Danish Film Institute (appointed by the Danish Ministry of Culture) and on
Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee (appointed by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong).

ROD STONEMAN
Rod Stoneman is an Emeritus Professor at the National University of Ireland, Galway Galway and a Visiting Professor at the Universities of
Exeter and the West of England. He was the Director of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na
hÉireann / the Irish Film Board and previously a Deputy Commissioning Editor in the Independent Film and Video Department at Channel 4
Television in the United Kingdom. In this role he commissioned and bought and provided production finance for over 50 African feature films.
His 1993 article 'African Cinema: Addressee Unknown', has been published in 6 journals and 3 books. He has made a number of
documentaries, including Ireland: The Silent Voices, Italy: the Image Business, 12,000 Years of Blindness and The Spindle. He is the author
of Chávez: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, A Case Study of Politics and the Media; Seeing is Believing: The Politics of the Visual and
Educating Filmmakers: Past, Present and Future with Duncan Petrie.

Assistant Professor ＆ Chair of Visual ＆ Digital Production Dept

Mohamed Ghazala is assistant professor of animation and the chair of the
department of the Visual & Digital Production of Effat University/ Saudi Arabia,
besides being the Vice President of the International Animated Film Association,
ASIFA, and the founder of its first chapter in Africa and in the Arab world. Ghazala
directed and co-directed many awarded films, such as "Carnival" (2001), "Crazy
Works" (2002), "HM HM" (2005),"Sayari Yetu" (2006), including the first Yemen's
animated film "Salma" in 2006, and "Honyan's Shoe" (2009) which won the Animation
Prize at The African Movie Academy Awards (The African Oscar AMAA) in
Lagos/Nigeria 2010. He gave a number of workshops on animation in different
countries and acted as a film consultant for several international festivals. In 2011, he
published his first book under the title "Animation in the Arab World" (Lambert AP.
Germany). His second book with title "Animation in Africa" which published in Egypt
2013.

Sumia Jaama/Juxun is Dutch-born Somali poet, educator and coder. Co-

founder of SAWTI and winner of FourHubs’ 2018 Poetry Prize, she is a
Barbican Young Poet Alumni and a recent graduate of the Creative
Writing and Education MA at Goldsmith, University of London. She often
writes about movement, the process of leaving and what is captured when
we listen to silence. She has been published in Filigree: Contemporary
Black British Poetry, Khidr Zine Issue Two: Shifaa, Your name is a boat
amongst others. Commissioned poems by Royal Academy of Arts and
Keats House Museum. Sumia has run creative writing and coding
workshops in multiple spaces and programmes including Keats House’s
Creative writing Summer School, The American School, Queen Mary
University and Roundhouse.

his influence felt on both sides of the industry - as an entertainer and as a
businessman. Over the course of his illustrious career Sipho has become an
integral part of the entertainment industry and his contributions to the musical
landscape of South Africa are appreciated and honoured by music lovers the world
over.

Studios
Elvin Ross, an award winning composer, owner and executive producer of E. Ross
Studios, is well known and widely respected in the television and music industries. For the
last twenty years he has composed music for a number of Tyler Perry’s stage plays,
television series and films such as Diary Of A Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family
Reunion, House of Payne and The Haves and The Have Nots, and many many others. He
is currently the weekly composer for Tyler Perry’s Too Close To Home (TLC) and just
completed Boo! A Madea Halloween. His credits also include serving as Creator and
Executive Producer of the television award winning Gospel Dream Talent Search as seen
on BET and GMC.

Today she is known as the Princess of Africa, performing artist,
entrepreneur, and humanitarian Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Yvonne’s life, from
the beginning of her meteoric rise in 1985 as a music star of infectious pop
melodies and dance music during the height of apartheid, the daughter of
Puti and Sophie Machaka, a mother to four boys, entrepreneur,
businesswoman, and now a philanthropist with the recently established
Princess of Africa Foundation (2007).
