Authentic and equitable family engagement contributes to improved student outcomes and closes persistent achievement gaps among
students of different racial, ethnic, and family income levels. Participants in this equity micro-course can expect the following take-aways:
 Best practices for implementing the “Dual Capacity-Building Framework” for designing family engagement
initiatives.
 Strategies for increasing the engagement of underrepresented families.
 Coaching support for developing a comprehensive family engagement plan grounded in the Office of Equity
Affairs' Cultural Responsiveness Framework.

Micro-Course
Seeing White
“Seeing White” Learning Central Course is designed for WCPSS teachers, PLTs, SITs, equity teams, and other professional learning
teams. Participants will take a deep dive into questions about whiteness and its political, economic, and social constructions. This online
course includes podcast audio, transcripts, discussion questions, and links to additional resources.

“Seeing White” is a critically acclaimed podcast series by Scene on Radio, hosted by John Biewen, Audio Program Director at Duke
University’s Center for Documentary Studies. The series includes features from leading scholars and regular co-host, Dr. Chenjerai
Kumanyika.

Participants will consider these essential questions throughout the series:


 How was race constructed?
 If someone invented it, why? For what purpose?
 How has the meaning of whiteness changed over the centuries and how does it function now?

Safe Zone Training
Supporting LGBTQ+ School Communities
This workshop is a 3-part course designed for the educator to interactively explore topics and methods to better understand and support
LGBTQ students and staff in the school community. Participation in this workshop will deepen your level of understanding of what it
means to be an LGBTQ student or staff member, expand your ally vocabulary, and gain tools and confidence to be a support to your
LGBTQ students and staff. Facilitators will guide you through safe and honest discussions about gender identity, gender expression, and
sexuality. You will apply new vocabulary to interactive activities and connect as a group by practicing real world scenarios such as coming
out, how to make transgender students feel safe, and recognizing heterosexual privilege. This session is designed for both the novice and
experienced ally.

Exploring Latino Culture
If your school is faced with a growing Latino population, this is the workshop for you. In this session, you will learn about Latino cultural
norms, values, and traditions. Participants will also explore how culture affects academics, classroom behavior, and the challenges faced
by families and students immigrating to the United States. Participants will walk away with specific culturally relevant strategies to
increase Latino family engagement and student achievement.

Teaching Tolerance: Social Justice 101
This interactive workshop helps teachers learn how to effectively implement anti-bias instruction in their classrooms. Participants will
explore practical strategies for accomplishing academic and social-emotional goals side by side. They will discuss learning conditions that
honor all identities and reflect diversity, equity and justice. After exploring ready-to-use materials, applying rigorous standards and
planning ways to incorporate research-based teaching practices, participants will leave the workshop with ideas and tools for transforming
their classrooms and schools.

Beyond Diversity I
The Office of Equity Affairs will offer Beyond Diversity I by Pacific Educational Group for WCPSS employees. Beyond Diversity is a
two-day seminar that is designed to help leaders, employees, and organizations understand the impact of race on their lives, work, and their
overall growth and development. Interactive and stirring exercises will be performed to strengthen participants' critical consciousness of
race and lead then to investigate the role that racism plays in institutionalizing social disparities. Substitute forms/pay is NOT provided.
Please work with your supervisor to arrange for a substitute.
