Lesson Idea Name: What is the missing whole number?

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.OA.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or
subtraction equation relating to three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that
makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = □ – 3, 6 + 6 = ∆. Represent and interpret

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will be engaged because they are participating in competitive activity against their
classmates. They are answering mathematical questions as quick as they can, but accurately in order to
achieve the highest score. The students will need to solve the problems quickly as well as react quickly.

Representation: The students will be solving for the missing whole number that will make the equation true.
The missing whole number will be one of the three numbers in the equation. There will also be addition and
subtraction equations. The students will be visually shown these questions, and I will also be reading them
aloud for auditory learners.

Action and Expression: Each of the students’ answers will be displayed up on the board through the Kahoot!
software. The students will be solving a mixture of addition and subtraction problems. They may be solving
for the answer or they may be solving for a missing whole number in the beginning of the equation. Students
may work in small groups or individually.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The students will have previously learned the meaning of the addition, subtraction, and equal sign. They will
also have solved addition and subtraction problems to determine if the equations are true or false. They
students will know how to accurately solve addition and subtraction problems.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will solve the problems for the missing whole number as quickly as they can on the tool Kahoot!
The teacher will display the problem on the board and read the problem aloud to the class. The students will
have their own computers or tablets. If there are not enough for every student, then they can work in pairs or
small groups. This will allow the students to show what they know and will give the teacher a better
understanding of what the students have mastered or what they may need more work on.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

The working samples are provided through Kahoot!

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
There will only be one correct answer per question. I will preselect these. At the end, I will display the
questions again with the correct answers. This will allow the students to see if they go the answers right or
wrong. It will also help students understand why if they got an question wrong.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

I will go over every question. I will show how to solve the problem so the students can see how to get the
correct answer. I will provide feedback to each of the students, so they know what they got correct or what
they got wrong. I will also review the questions that showed a lot of incorrect answers. I will provide similar
questions to practice if needed.

How will the data be used?

Kahoot! Saves the data, so I will always be able to access the scores when needed. I will use the data a whole
to see where students stand strongly on the topic as well as where students tend to fall weak on the topic. I
will use the data to create future lessons to help further engage or reteach if needed. This will also help me
with extensions and/or differentiation. I will also make sure to provide feedback to each of the students
based on their individual data.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Spring 2018_SJB
Student Response and Assessment Tools
My personal goal for this activity is for the students to look at the problems and be able to tell what place is
missing and how to solve it. For example if the number after the equal sign is missing, then the student will
know to look for the first two numbers and the sign before the equal sign. If the first number is 5 and the
second number is 6, then the student will look for sign between those two numbers. If the sign is plus sign,
then the student will know to add the two numbers to get 11. The student will need to look for the missing
whole number and solve for it.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson will allow students to show their knowledge in operations and algebraic thinking to determine the
missing whole number in addition and subtraction equations. The students are using technology by answering
questions on Kahoot! to show their knowledge of the topic. I could enhance this lesson by creating harder
problems or by using pictures of objects for the numbers. I could also have students work in groups to create
problems of their own through Kahoot!
