TITLE: CHECKPOINT - JANUARY

Date: Name: Roll No.

Subject: Science GRADE: 7 2018-2019 Total Marks: 20

1. The eardrum is a stretched membrane that starts vibrating because of external sound.
These vibrations are then sent to the inner ear from where the signal goes to the brain and
the sound is detected. Which part carry the signal from the inner ear to the brain? (1)

Answer: Auditory nerves

2. Complete the following table: (1)

Element Symbol
1. Beryllium Be
2. Lithium Li
3. Fluorine F
4. Silicon Si

3. Look at the following images: (1)

Which of the above take up space and also have some

weight?

a. only rocks, salt and powder

b. only water, rocks, salt and powder
c. only water, rocks, salt, powder and steam
d. All the things in the figure take up space and
have weight.

4. Which of the following correctly represents the shape of the Earth and the position of
people living on Earth?
(In all the figures, the arrow refers to the direction in which we are getting pulled towards
the Earth.)
(----- represents the surface of the Earth) (1)
5. Ratan took a thin, solid piece of material. When he put it in water, it rose and floated. He
took it out of the water and cut out holes in it as shown below. When Ratan puts the
material with holes back in the water, what will happen? Why? (2)

Ans. The material will still float. Objects made of floating materials (e.g., wood and foam)
will float in water even if there is a hole in them.

6. Shown in the picture are 4 bulbs numbered 1 to 4. If the points marked s and t are
connected by a copper wire which of the bulbs will glow? Justify your answer. (2)

Ans. If the points marked s and t are connected by a copper wire, all the 4 bulbs will glow. -
(1)
Because, the path for electrons to flow will be completed once s and t are connected. This
will allow current to flow through each bulb from positive terminal and to negative
terminal. Hence all the bulbs will glow.
- (1)

7. The following objects all have the same thickness. Which one would be the hardest to
break? Explain your answer.
(2)
a. Metal pipe b. Wood stick c. Chalk d. Pencil (1)

Because, the atoms in metal pipe are more compressed with very less space in between
compared to other materials making it heavier and harder. (1)

8. You would know that water and oil don't mix with each other. When oil is poured in a
glass filled with some water, it forms a layer on top as shown here. (2)

Corn syrup is another liquid that does not mix with water. Here is how the layers of water
and corn syrup look when poured in the same glass. How will the layers appear if all the
three liquids are poured into a single container? Explain your answer.
Ans: If all the liquids are poured into single container, corn syrup will appear at the bottom,
above it will be layer of water and above all will be layer of oil. The layers will be as follows
from top to bottom: Oil, Water and Corn syrup. (1)
Reason for the same is the difference in their densities. The densest liquid will sink in the
bottom like corn syrup and one with least density will float above all like oil in our case. (1)

9. If two horseshoe magnets are to be stored for a month, which of the following
positions will BEST preserve the magnetism in the magnets? Why? (2)
A. B. C. D.

Ans. Option B. You can store horseshoe magnets end-to-end, with opposite poles
touching. Store bar magnets so that the opposite poles are beside each other--the
north pole of one magnet should be next to the south pole of the other.
(1)
Only in case B, where opposite poles meet, magnetic fields will show attraction
and will be in constant use hence preserving magnetism.
In case A, C and D polarity between the magnets will not be maintained. (1)

10. A woolen blanket is often used to extinguish small fires. How does the blanket
extinguish such fires? Explain with two points. (2)
Ans. It smothers the flames. Fire requires oxygen to burn. As soon as the blanket
covers the person, the flames use up all of the oxygen; the fire goes out. The
application of the blanket would have a cooling effect.

11. A check dam is a type of structure, which stores water. How can check dam help during
the natural calamities like flood? (2)
Ans. Check dams store rain waters and then release them under control. This way it slows
down the flow of water during the monsoons, and allows it to seep into the soil. This further
helps prevent soil erosion.

12. You have two solutions, A and B. The pH of solution A is 6 and pH of solution B is 8.
Which solution has more hydrogen ion concentration? Which of this is acidic and which
one is basic? (2)

Ans. The pH value of a solution varies from 0 to 14. The pH value is 0 for a very strong acid
and the pH value is 14 for a very strong base. The pH value is 7 for a neutral solution. Hence
A is acidic and B is basic in nature. The concentration of hydrogen ion decreases from pH
value of 0 to 14 therefore A has more hydrogen ion concentration.
