LEARNING COMPETENCIES
A. RESPIRATORY & CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS WORKING WITH THE OTHER ORGAN SYSTEMS
 Explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and
other molecules to and from the different parts of the body; (S9LT-la-b-1)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Trace the flow of oxygenated blood within the heart and lungs ( U )
2. Explain how nutrients, gases and other molecules are transported to and from the different
parts of the body. ( U )
3. Draw a schematic diagram to show the interdependence of circulatory and respiratory systems
in transporting nutrients and gasses. ( D )

II. LEARNING CONTENT

TOPIC: RESPIRATORY and CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS WORKING WITH THE ORGAN SYSTEM
MATERIALS: bond paper, pen, chalk, yarn/string, strips of papers
REFERENCES: Science Learners Module 9-11, Science Teachers Guide 8-9

III. PROCEDURE

A. ENGAGEMENT
1. DRILL: RECALL
Teacher will ask to students to complete the table below, in which ask students to recall about the organ
systems discussed on the past lessons, function of the systems, the parts and as well as describing the
parts and functions.
Organ System Functions of System Organs/Parts Descriptions of each parts/organs
Respiratory System

Circulatory System

2. MIND PICK QUESTION

Teacher will ask students the following questions to determine if they have prior knowledge to the
topic. The following are the questions;
- Do you think that circulatory and respiratory systems as well as the other organ systems work hand
in hand? Why do you say so?
- What does the circulatory and respiratory system does for the rest of the organ system?
- How does the respiratory and circulatory system work together?

From the students’ responses, teacher must sort the answers and lead their explanation to the correct
answer.

B. EXPLORE
1. INVESTIGATORY ACTIVITY: ACTIVITY 3
Teacher will let the students to go to their groups, ask to perform Activity 3: Just go with the flow, page
9-10, Science 9 Learners Manual
2. SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM:
Teacher will ask students as group to draw a schematic diagram to show the interdependence of
circulatory and respiratory systems in transporting nutrients and gasses.
C. EXPLAIN
1. POST-INVESTIGATORY ACTIVITY DISCUSSION and INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION
After performing the activity, together with the students will check the activity and answers to the guide
questions. Then teacher will ask students about the key concept of the activity as well as asking the students
the following questions to facilitate discussion
- Trace the flow of oxygenated blood within the heart and lungs by mentioning the organs or parts
where the oxygenated blood flows from heart to the lungs.
- Explain how nutrients, gases and other molecules are transported to and from the different parts of
the body.

2. SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM:
Teacher will ask students as any representative from the group to explain their drawing of their schematic
diagram which shows the interdependence of circulatory and respiratory systems in transporting nutrients
and gasses.

KEY CONCEPTS TO EMPHASIZE:

Air first enters your lungs and then into the left part of your heart. It is then driven by your heart into the
bloodstream, all the way through your body. The heart pumps blood, which transports essential nutrients,
oxygen, and other chemicals to every cell in your body. Once it reaches the cells, oxygen processes the nutrients
to release energy. Carbon dioxide is given off during this process. The blood delivers carbon dioxide into the
right portion of your heart, from which it is pumped to the lungs. Carbon dioxide leaves your body through the
lungs when you exhale.

D. ELABORATE
1. Enrichment Activity on Science 9 Learners Manual
- Let student do the enrichment activity on page 11 of the Science 9 Learners Manual.
- Directions: In the given framework of the human body below, illustrate the blood flow
and gas exchange in the respiratory and circulatory systems using diagrams and
arrows. Color your work to show the distinction of oxygen and carbon dioxide carried in
the blood.

D. EVALUATE
I. Fill in the Blanks
A. Supply the missing term to have a functional understanding of the flow of oxygenated blood within the
heart and lungs. Use the key terms in the box below. Some of the terms can be used twice in answering.
Tricuspid Right Atrium Aorta Lungs
All parts of the body Bicuspid Pulmonic Vena cava
Aortic Left Atrium Pulmonary Veins Right Ventricle
Pulmonary Artery left Ventricle Deoxygenated Oxygenated

___(1)_____ blood coming from all parts of the body is received by ____(2)______ of the heart by the way of
the blood vessels called ___(3)______. Contraction pf the right atrium sends blood to the ___(4)____. At this
point, ___(5)____ valves open. Contraction of the right ventricle forces blood to the __(6)___ for oxygenation by
way of the ____(7)______. At this point, the____(8)____ valves are closed to prevent the back flow of the blood
in the right atrium.
From the lungs, _____(9)_____ blood goes back to the ___(10)_____ of the heart via blood vessel called
___(11)____. Contraction of the left atrium forces blood to the ___(12)____. At this point, the ___(13)___ are
open. Contraction of the left ventricle pumps blood to the ____(14)____ by the way of the ___(15)____, the
largest artery. At this point, the __(16)____ valves are open while the _____(17)_____ are closed to prevent the
back flow of blood in the left atrium.

B. Trace the movement of the blood by putting number on the blanks before the enumerated structure/ parts.
_____Tricuspid ____Vena cava
____Right Atrium ____Left Atrium
____Aorta ____Pulmonary Vein
____Lungs ____Right Ventricle
____All parts of the body ____Pulmonary Artery
____Bicuspid ____left Ventricle
____Pulmonary Valve
II. Journal Entry with Illustration
Directions:
A. Draw a schematic diagram to show the interdependence of circulatory and respiratory systems in
transporting nutrients and gasses.
B. Explain your schematic diagram by incorporating an explanation on how nutrients, gases and other
molecules are transported to and from the different parts of the body. (U )
