1. Introduction
1.1. Purpose
This manual describes the function and mode of operation of the PE-640x/USIO65 system element.
• Functional descriptions
• Technical Specifications
• Descriptions of interfaces to the process and other system elements
• Possible configurations
1.2. Application
The PE-640x/USIO65 peripheral element is used in the Error! No property name supplied. system for
connecting I/O modules to a basic system element with open-/closed-loop control function (master
control element, processing element).
The document you are reading right now is addressed to users, who are in charge of the following
engineering tasks:
• Conceptual activities, as for example design and configuration
• Creation of the assembly technical documentation using the designated engineering tools
• System parameterization and system diagnostic, using the designated engineering tools
• Technical system maintenance
Above applies, as far as these tasks do not involve manipulations of the hardware.
Manipulating the hardware itself, as for example "unplugging" and "plugging" printed circuit boards
and modules, or working on terminals and/or connectors – for instance when applying changes to the
wiring – are – also if they are an issue in the context of configuration, parameterization and diagnostic –
not subject of this document.
Instructions and regulations are also stated in installation manuals or manuals which
deal with hardware installation and other hardware manipulations.
PE-640x/USIO65 is mainly used in telecontrol and automation. The peripheral element is in charge for
process data input and output. For this it is supported by I/O modules.

2.2. Architecture
The modules of the peripheral element are mounted on a TS35 rail in a specified order. The installation
of the TS35 rail takes place on a vertical wall in vertical or horizontal installation position.

The power supply and TM bus are electrically connected during the process of latching together,
wherein each module can be individually replaced.
Attention
The TS35 rail, on which the modules are fastened, must be grounded.
The connection is made via the serial Ax 1703 peripheral bus using bus interfaces. Several bus
interfaces are available:
Configurations with CM-0843 and CM-0842 can be found in the respective data sheet.
The supply to the peripheral element takes place via one of the following power supply modules.
The process signals are connected to the I/O modules by detachable screw terminals. Since these
screw terminals carry the circuitry, nothing needs to be disconnected when changing out a module. The
screw terminals are included with each I/O module.
2.2.5.1. Configuration
• Up to 8 I/O modules can be installed in addition to the peripheral control module as long as both
─ the total load of the I/O modules does not exceed 7000 mW
─ the total load of the I/O modules and the peripheral control module does not exceed the power
provided by the power supply module
• If return information monitoring of pulse commands is used direct on USIO65, the DI and DO
modules must always follow one another. If the assignment is made on the CPC65 using OPM,
the sequence of the DI and DO modules can be choosen arbitrary.
• AO-6380 modules (max. 3 are possible) must always be installed on the first slots
2.2.6. System-Busses
The PE-640x/USIO65 peripheral element communicates via the TM bus with the I/O modules and
through them with the process. Via the Ax 1703 peripheral bus the communication is done with the
open-/closed-loop control function according to IEC 61131-3 in the higher-level basic system element.

2.2.6.1. TM Bus
Communication between the I/O modules and peripheral control module takes place via the TM bus in
the master/slave process, wherein the I/O modules are the slaves.
The I/O modules are automatically addressed on the TM bus based on the sequence of physical fitting.
The I/O module connected directly to the peripheral control module has the least significant address.
The peripheral element is connected to the master control element via the Ax 1703 peripheral bus (see
chapter 2.2.2, Connection to the higher-level Basic System Element ).
The address of the peripheral element on the Ax 1703 peripheral bus is determined in
SAT TOOLBOX II, when defining the Ax 1703 peripheral bus configuration. This address is then set by
the PBA switch on the peripheral control module.
As soon as the peripheral element is supplied or a startup is triggered by a reset, the ER-LED on the
peripheral control module lights up.
A test of the program memory takes place. If this test is successful, the ER-LED goes out after approx.
5 seconds. If the ER-LED remains lit, there is an error in the program memory. A diagnosis with
SAT TOOLBOX II is not possible.
This is followed by additional tests, e.g., RAM test, parameter test, etc. If an error arises in the process,
the ER-LED blinks, and startup is terminated.
Another test compares the I/O module configuration defined by parameters with the actual physical
configuration (the way the I/O module's addresses have been set). If a difference is discovered, startup
is terminated. In other words, the peripheral control module gets ready, but no I/O module (even if
correctly configured) . This state can only be exited given a matching and therefore correct configuration
and a repeated startup.
If the startup can be properly terminated, the RY-LED (ready) lights up on all modules.
The periodic information about the open-/closed-loop control function is initialized with the value 0 and
an I/O module-dependent status "disturbed".
After startup of the peripheral element (ready), all periodic information from undisturbed inputs is
described with the currently pre-processed value, and the corresponding status "disturbed" is reset.
The behavior of the outputs depends on the parameter "failure mode" and the I/O module.
The response time describes the span of time from when an event occurs until information is output to
the process by the automation unit.
The diagram below shows the chronological relationships of the affected system parts.

The following table indicates the processing time of the I/O modules:
The failure of an I/O module is signaled by periodic information for the open-loop and closed-loop
function, and by diagnostic information. The "RY" LED goes out on the corresponding I/O module.
The following table shows the time (t) from the failure of the I/O module until it is signaled:
After replacing the I/O module, failed I/O modules are started up again exclusively by running up the
peripheral element.
Attention
If no bus activity is determined within 49 ms, the peripheral element is switched to the "firmware shut
down" state. As a result, the watchdog operates, and the I/O module-specific failure treatments enter
into force.
If the configuration of the I/O modules is changed in SAT TOOLBOX II, e.g., new modules are added or
existing ones removed and charged, this change will only go into effect after a startup of the peripheral
element.
The data points described in this section do not independ on the I/O module configuration. The data
points of the I/O modules are described together with the corresponding I/O module.
The data points of this peripheral element are provided to the open-/closed-loop control function
exclusively via periodic information.
Updating grid corresponds to time (t) as described in the "I/O Module Monitoring" section.

Power Supply
Operating voltage 4.7…5.1 VDC, 170 mW
The voltage is picked off at the TM bus
The last input of a group (IN D07 and IN D17) can be used for power monitoring. When power
monitoring is parameterized then this input has a filtertime of 2 ms. If this function isn´t parameterized,
the input has a filtertime of 3 ms as all other inputs. When using power monitoring, the number of binary
inputs for process information is reduced to 7 inputs per group.
The fused signalling voltage must be connected to these inputs. If the signalling voltage fails, the
accompanying process information for the open-/closed-loop control function is frozen at the last valid
state.
A signalling voltage failure is signaled by periodic information sent to the open-/closed-loop control
function, and by diagnostic information.
The process signals must be connected to four 10-pin screw terminals. The pin assignment of the
peripheral connectors is described in the following table.
The following circuitry variants are examples, and do not relate exclusively to the depicted
inputs/outputs.
