Petrel differentiates between Import file (on the File menu and on the toolbar) and Import (on selection), located on the Insert menu and on the right-click menu of folders in the Petrel Explorer panes Using Import (on selection), imported data are inserted directly into the active folder and, therefore, only formats that can be held in the active folder are available. If you use Import file, the data are imported and placed at the bottom of the Input pane, not inside a folder. Procedure — Importing with a Predefined Format 1. Find the data to import, choose the appropriate format, and click Open. 2. Specify the template (such as Elevation Time or Thickness depth). Select Files to Import A dialog box opens after selecting Import file. In this dialog, choose ‘the data to be imported and the correct format. Note that, depending on the format you select, a corresponding illustration of the format displays at the bottom of the dialog as an example. The available formats are limited to those appropriate for the data stored in the folder type. (For example, you cannot import a SEG-Y file into the Wells folder.) Input Data Dialog Box In the Input data dialog box, you specify the template (such as, Type of data being imported). The template must match the type of data you are loading. The template of an object defines its unit and color table. ‘Templates can be created or edited in the Templates pane. For example, the file being imported is named Tarbert-1 and it contains isochore data, as indicated by the X, Y, and Z ranges shown in the Data range section.
