A Giant Leap
Saturday, July 20th marks the
50th Anniversary of the first men on
the moon.
The dialogue between Eagle,
whose on-board computer kept
ringing false alarms and Houston
— with occasional interpolations by
Apollo Control — was heard by tens
of millions on radios and televisions
in the United States of America and
beyond.
Glasgow native Phil Weber was
one of them. He was just six years
old and gathered around the black
& white television with his family on
a Sunday afternoon/evening when
Eagle’s powered let-down to the
moon, a suspenseful maneuver that
began at an altitude of about 46,000
feet, was on the air waves.
After listening to the tense
dialogue during descent, finally,
those famous words by Neil
Armstrong were spoken: “Houston,
Tranquility Base here. THE EAGLE
HAS LANDED.”
Houston: “Roger, Tranquility,
we copy you on the ground. You
got a bunch of guys about to turn
blue. We’re breathing again. Thanks
a lot.”
continued Phil Weber is the recipient of numerous NASA awards over the years.
