1. General
1.1 Motor circuit breakers will conform to the general recommendations of standard IEC 947 -1,2 and 4
(VDE 660, 0113 NF EN 60 947-1-2-4, BS 4752) and to standards UL 508 and CSA C22-2 N°14.
1.1.1 The devices will be in utilization category A, conforming to IEC 947-2 and AC3 conforming
to IEC 947-4.
1.1.2 The rated service breaking capacity (Ics) for 400/415 V will be at least equal to minimum 40% of
the ultimate breaking capacity (Icu) for standard performance breakers (minimu Icu value 15 kA) and to
minimum 50% of Icu for high performance breakers (minimu Icu value 50 kA).
1.2 The organisation of the production plants will conform to the requirements of standard ISO 9002.
1.3 The motor circuit breakers will be available in three-poles versions.
1.4 The motor circuit breakers will be designed to be mounted vertically or horizontally without derating.
Power supply will be from the top or from the bottom.
2.2 In order to ensure maximum safety, the contacts will be isolated from other functions such as the
operating mechanism, casing, releases, auxiliaries, etc, by high performance thermoplastic chambers.
2.3 The operating mechanism of the motor circuit breakers must have snap action opening and closing
with free tripping of the control devices. All the poles will close, open, and trip simultaneously.
2.4 The motor circuit breakers will be actuated either 2 start/stop pushbuttons, tumbler control, or by a
rotary operator clearly indicating the position ON (I), OFF (O), Trip (in the case of a rotary operator).
2.5 In order to ensure isolation with clearly visible breaking conforming to standard IEC 947-2 paragraph
7-27:
- the mechanism will be designated so that the different types of operator will only be in position (O) if
the main contacts are physically separated,
- in position (O) the operating devices will indicate the isolated position.
Isolation is enhanced by the double break of the main circuit.
2.6 The motor circuit breakers will accept a padlocking device in the “isolated” position.
2.7 The motor circuit breakers will be equipped with a “PUSH TO TRIP” device on the front enabling the
correct operation of the mechanism and poles opening to be checked.
2.9.5 The motor circuit breakers will have a combination with the downstream contactor enabling the
provision of a perfectly co-ordinated motor-starter. This combination will enable type 1 or type 2 co-
ordination of the protective devices conforming to IEC 947-4-1.
Type 2 co-ordination will be guaranteed by tables tested and certified by an official laboratory: LOVAG
(or other official laboratory).
2.9.6 The motor circuit breakers, depending on the type, could be equipped with a door-mounted operator
which will allow the device setting.
2.10 Protection functions
General recommendations :
2.10.1 The motor circuit breakers will be equipped with releases comprising a thermal element assuring
overload protection and a magnetic element for short-circuit protection.
2.10.2 In order to ensure safety and avoid unwanted tripping, the magnetic trip threshold (fixed) will be
factory set to an average value of 12 Ir.
2.10.3 All the elements of the motor circuit breakers will be designated to enable operation at an ambient
temperature of 60°C without derating.
2.10.4 The thermal trips will be adjustable on the the front by a rotary selector.
2.10.5 The adjustment of the protection will be simultaneous for all poles.
