PREPARATION OF TURBINE FOR STARTING.

-:GENERAL:-
v Examine the turbine visually and be sure that all the equipment of the
turbo set are in working order.
v Inform all the duty personnel about the starting of turbine.
v Make sure that all the bearings have sufficient oil for lubrication.
v Check that all the measuring instruments i.e. monometers thermometer
thermocouples signaling and protection system are in working condition.
v In case the turbine is in room temperature then the pointer of turbine
expansion indicator and differential expansion indicator would be in
nearly ‘o’ position.
v Check the operation of the control gear both for manual and remote
control. set the control gear in to ‘o’ position on scale. In this position the
servomotors of ESV, IV and control valves of HPT and IPT should be
closed.

PREPARATION OF TURBINE FOR STARTING.

v Set the load limitor in ‘o’ position.

v All the working places of turbo set and apparatus should be
working condition.
v Check the state of all valves. By operating them manually or
by electric drive.
v Turbine must be running on barring gear before it is steam
rolled.
v Check the interlocking of the valves of by pass stations.

NS PATEL
PREPARATION OF TURBINE FOR STARTING.

v Following valves are to be tightly closed.

a. Main steam valve and its by pass valves.
b. ESV, IV & control valves of HPT &IPT.
v. Following valves to be opened.
a. Inspection valves on the main steam line.
b. All the drain and blow down valves on fresh steam
pipes and reheat lines to drain expander.
c. Drain valves of HPT & IPT steam admission pipes
of HPT & IPT and extraction lines to the heaters.

NS PATEL
v
Turbine cold start
Raise the steam parameter and heat the main steam line up to MSV’s.
v Open SDV &PRDS-II according to instruction stated elsewhere, when 50
° c superheated steam is available in main steam line and thereby heat the
HPT &reheat lines.
v the HPT is heated up to 150 °C by the steam entering in it though its
exhaust.
v Open by pass valves of MSV’s and then open ESV’S by 20% and heat
steam admission pipes up to control valves to a temperature of 150 °C.
v Open interceptor valves 20% and heat steam admission pipes up to
control valves to a temperature of 100 °C.
v The side control valves of IPT have been provided with in built relief
holes through which steam leaks into IPT and may cause disengagement
of rotor from barring gear if the pressure in hot re-heat line exceeds 1
kg/cm²

NS PATEL
v During the process of heating of the
steam pipe lines and of turbine, check
that the drain system is working normal
and there is no clogged drain pipe.
v Close by pass valves of MSV are about
20 kg/cm² and 260-280°C.
v Check that interceptor and control
valves of IPT have attained a
temperature 100°C
v Close PRDS-II the pressure in hot re-
heat line shall drop to condenser
pressure. NS PATEL
• Having accomplished the heating, check and note down the
following readings.
• Metal temperature of pipes before MSV.
• Metal temperature of ESV.
• Metal temperature of steam admission lines.
• Metal temperature of re-heat line.
• Metal temperature in the zone of regulating stage.
• Metal temperature of interceptor valve.
• Metal temperature of HPT&IPT in the steam admission stage.
• Steam temperature before MSV.
• Differential expansion of HP/IP/LP rotors.

NS PATEL
v As soon as the speed of the rotor rises above 3.4 RPM, check that
barring gear gets disengaged and its motor gets switched off
automatically.
v Smoothly raise the speed of the unit to 1200 RPM at the rate of
about 50 rpm/minute and at this speed sock the set for about 20
minutes.
v To ensure uniform heating.
v Smoothly raise the speed to 3000 RPM without pause.
v It is dangerous to run the set near the critical speeds and hence it is
prohibited to hold the set in the critical speed zone.
v Then unit synchronized.

NS PATEL
Turbine Hot start.
v In case the temperature of HPT in the zone of regulating stage is more than
350°c, than the hot starting of the turbine should be carried out with the
help of control valves.
v Under such cases, both the MSV should be kept closed and rolling of the
turbine may be done with control gear, keeping the by pass valves closed,
thereby proceeding for synchronization of set as described elsewhere.
v Check that the eccentricity and differential expansions of rotors are within
allowable limits.
v Check the readiness of the entire equipment of the turbo set for the restart.
v Completely open ESV, IV & control valves of HPT & IPT.

NS PATEL
Turbine Hot start.
v Slowly open the by pass valves of MSV there by admitting
steam to turbine.
v As soon as speed of the rotor rises above the speed 3.4 RPM,
check and ensure that the barring gear gets disengaged and its
motor gets switched off automatically.
v Smoothly raise the speed to 3000 RPM without pause.
v It is dangerous to run the set near the critical speeds and
hence it is prohibited to hold the set in the critical speed
zone.
v Then unit synchronized.
