Create a new document

1. Start Microsoft Publisher 2003.

You should see a screen that looks like this:

2. In the New Publication pane, click Publications for Print.

Select a design type

1. In the Publications for Print list, click Flyers.

Select a design layout

1. Under Flyers, click Announcement.

2. In the Thumbnails pane, click Party Announcement Flyer.

A brief message will flash, telling you that Publisher is changing your document.

The screen should look like this:

TIP: If you have never entered your Personal Information in Publisher, a Wizard
will start and ask you to enter it.

In the Wizard screen, click the button, then skip to Step 2 on the next
page.

Add personalized data

1. On the Menu Bar, click Edit, then Personal Information.

2. When the Personal Information window appears, click Other Organization.

3. In the Name box, type:

Emma Publisher

4. In the Job or position title box, type:

President

5. In the first line of the Address box, type:

826 Main Street

6. In second line of the Address box, type:

Anytown, Anystate 92346

7. In the Organization Name box, type:

Anyville Preservation League

8. In the Tag line or motto box, type:

Preserving our past for all our tomorrows

9. Click the button.

The personal information should be added to the flyer.

Save the document

1. On the Toolbar, click the icon.

2. When the Save As window appears, create a new folder within the My
Documents folder called Practice Publisher Files.

TIP: Click the icon in the Save As window.

When the new folder appears, type:

Practice Publisher Files

3. Double-click the Practice Publisher Files folder so it appears in the Save in box:

4. Click in the File name box, then type:

Anyville Party

5. Click the button.

Work with text

Enter text directly

1. Click the blue text box.

TIP: If all the text in the box isn't selected when you click in it, click somewhere else,
then click back in the box.

2. Type:

Twenty years ago, the Anyville Preservation League formed to save the Johnson
house from demolition. We have helped save over two dozen buildings.

The flyer should now look like this:

Insert Text

1. Highlight the words We have.

2. Press the DELETE key on your keyboard.

The text should disappear:

3. Type:

The League has

The second sentence should now read like this:

4. In the contact box after Anyville Preservation League, type:

Headquarters

5. Press the ENTER key.

6. On the next line after Headquarters, type:

Emma Publisher, President

The flyer should look like this:

Resize a text box

1. Click the text box that contains the text 826 Main Street.

The text should be selected:

TIP: If the entire box isn't highlighted as shown, click and drag over the text to select
it.

2. Place the cursor on the right center circle in the outline around the text box.

The cursor should change to a double-arrow:

3. Click and drag the right edge of the box until it aligns with the left edge of the star
graphic.

The text should realign in the new box size:

4. Resize the rest of the text boxes on the right side of the flyer so the boxes fit
snugly around the text.

When you're done, it should look like this:

5. Resize the lower left text box so that the last line of text does not show.

It should look like this:

Use Zoom features

1. On the Toolbar, click the drop-down arrow.

2. When the menu appears, click 100%.

The document view should look like this:

3. Click the drop-down arrow again, then click Whole Page.

The document view should return to its original size.

Preview and print

1. On the Toolbar, click the icon.

The flyer should now look like this:

To print the flyer, you'd click the icon.

Click the icon.

Change colors

Change text colors

1. Open Publisher.

2. On the Toolbar, click the icon.

3. When the Open Publication window appears, make sure Practice Publisher
Files appears in the Look in box.

4. Click the Anyville Party file, then click the button.

Click the text box with the word Party inside.

The text box should look like this:

5. Click the Font Color drop-down arrow.

When the menu appears, click More Colors.

6. When the Colors window appears, click one of the dark green patches in the color
grid.

7. Click the button.

8. Click outside the text box.

This should deselect the text.

The word Party should now be green.

9. Highlight all the text in the lower left box.

10. Click the Font Color drop-down arrow.

Then click Black in the color grid.

11. Click on the text to un-highlight it.

The text should now be black:

Change background colors

1. Click the text box with the word Party inside.

2. On the toolbar, click the drop-down arrow next to the icon.

3. When the menu appears, click More Fill Colors.

4. When the Colors window appears, click one of the yellow patches.

Then click the button.

The background color of the text box should be yellow.

TIP: You can also change the fill pattern of text box backgrounds. To do this, click
Fill Effects when the Fill Color menu appears.

Change color scheme

1. On the Menu Bar, click Format, then Color Schemes.

The Color Schemes panel should appear:

2. Scroll down the list and click Mistletoe.

The colors in the flyer that you have not manually changed should adjust to the new
color scheme.

Insert text boxes

1. On the Menu Bar, click Insert, then Text Box.

2. Move the cursor into the body of the flyer.

The cursor will change to crosshairs:

3. Move the cursor to the 1 inch horizontal/5.5 inch vertical mark:

TIP: You'll know when the crosshairs are aligned correctly when the 1" line in the
top ruler and the 5.5" line on the side ruler turn from black to white.

Also, the location numbers on the Status Bar will display 1.000, 5.500.

4. Click the mouse button and keep it held down.

This will anchor the upper left corner of the new text box.

5. Drag the crosshairs down and to the right until they are at the 3" horizontal/6.75"
vertical mark:

6. Click the mouse button again to finish drawing the box.

The box is now ready for you to enter text.

7. Click in the new text box and type:

About Our Group

Click outside the text box to deselect it.

Move text boxes

1. Click the "About Our Group" text box to select it.

2. Drag the text box up so that the top left corner is at 1.0" horizontal and 5.0"
vertical.

3. Drag the text box back down to its original location with the top left corner at 1.0"
horizontal, 5.5" vertical.

Insert pages

1. On the Menu Bar, click Insert, then Page.

2. When the Insert Page window appears, click the Create one text box on each
page radio button.

Leave the other options set at the defaults.

3. Click the button.

A new page is added to the flyer, and a second page icon appears on the Status Bar:

Flow text to other boxes

1. Click the icon on the Status Bar.

This returns you to page one of the flyer.

2. Click the lower left-hand text box on page 1.

TIP: If the icon doesn't appear at the bottom of the text box, click and
drag the text box outline up until it does show.

The cursor should change to a tipping pitcher:

Format text

Change fonts

1. Click the icon.

5. Scroll up or down in the list to Arial Black, then click it.

1. Click the icon.

2. In the text box on page 2, click at the end of the paragraph.

Import text

1. On page 1 of the flyer, click the "Describe your location" text box.

2. On the Menu Bar, click Insert, then Text File.

TIP: If the Text File option isn't displayed in the menu, click the at the bottom of
the menu.

This will display all the menu options.

3. Double-click the Location document.

Its text should flow into the text box:

Insert graphics

1. In Publisher, go to page 2 of the flyer.

2. On the Menu Bar, click Insert, then Picture, then From File.

When the Insert Picture window appears, double-click the file.

The picture should appear in the flyer:

TIP: If you have Microsoft Office clipart installed on your computer, you can
insert clip art that comes with Publisher.

Just click Insert, Picture, then Clipart.

Resize graphics

1. Click the bottom left corner of the frame and drag it up, until the house is about 2
inches tall.

The exact dimensions are displayed in the Status Bar:

2. Click the center bottom circle, then drag it down .5 inches vertically.

TIP: Dragging any of the four corners resizes the graphic in proportion.

Dragging any of the center circles stretches or shrinks the graphic


disproportionately.

Move graphics

1. Click the graphic.


2. Hold down the mouse button and drag the graphic to the top right corner of the
page.

3. Release the mouse button.

Add page numbers

1. Go to the first page of the flyer.

2. On the Menu Bar, click Insert, then Page Numbers.

3. When the Page Numbers window appears, click the Position drop-down arrow.

4. In the list that appears, click Bottom of page (Footer).

5. In the Alignment list, click the drop-down arrow, then Center.

6. Leave the Show page number on first page check box checked.

Then click the button.

The page should now look like this:

7. Save the flyer.

Check spelling

1. Open Publisher, then open the Anyville Party flyer.

2. Click the box that contains the word "Party."

3. On the Toolbar, click the icon.

4. When the alert window appears, click the button.

The Check Spelling window should appear:

5. Since Anyville is a word that is spelled correctly, click the button.

6. Follow the prompts until the spelling check for the whole document is complete.

When the spelling check is finished, you'll see an alert window:

7. Click the button.

Change spacing

1. Click the text box in the lower left corner of the page.

2. On the Menu Bar, click Format, then Paragraph.

3. When the Paragraph window appears, click the down arrow beside the Between
lines box and change line spacing to 1.

4. Click the up arrow beside the After paragraph box and change it to 2 pt.

5. Click the button.

Align/distribute graphics

1. Click the green star beside the text About Our Group.

2. Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard.

3. With the CTRL key still held down, click the small green star on the left side of
the page.

4. With the CTRL key still held down, click the red star in the white space.

5. On the Menu Bar, click Arrange, then Align or Distribute, then Align Center,
then Distribute Vertically.

The graphics line up, vertically centered and evenly spaced:

Rotate text and graphics

1. Click the "About our group" text box.

2. Click the green circle at the top of the box.

The cursor should change to a round circle with an arrow:

3. Move the cursor to the left until the box is at a 45 degree angle.

The text is now rotated:

TIP: Rotate graphics the same way you rotated the text box.

To rotate objects in 90 degree increments, click Arrange on the Menu Bar, then
Rotate or flip. Then click Rotate Left or Rotate Right.

Flow text around graphics

1. Move to page 2 of the flyer.

2. Click on the house graphic to select it.

3. Right-click the graphic.

When the menu appears, click Format Picture.

4. When the Format Picture window appears, click the Layout tab.

The Square wrapping style should be selected by default:

5. In the Wrapping Style section, click Top and Bottom.

6. Click the button.

7. Move the graphic down one inch.

The bulleted list should flow over the top and bottom of the graphic:

Add tables and graphs

1. On the Menu Bar, click Table, then Insert, then Table.

2. When the Create Table window appears, type:

Advanced Features

Employ Pack and Go

What is Pack and Go?

The Pack and Go feature allows you to print a Publisher document on a computer without
the same fonts and/or graphics that you have on your computer.

A Pack and Go file embeds the fonts and graphics used in the document in the file, so the
printed document will remain the same, regardless of the computer used to print it.

1. On the Menu Bar, click File, then Pack and Go.

TIP: If the Pack and Go option is not displayed in the menu, click the icon at
the bottom of the menu.

2. When the next menu appears, click Take to another computer.

3. When the Pack and Go Wizard appears, click the button.

4. When the next wizard screen appears, click the radio button next to the blank box.

5. Click the button, then navigate to the preferred folder.

6. Click the button.

7. Click the button.

8. When the next wizard screen appears, click the checkbox next to Embed
TrueType fonts.

has different fonts.

9. Leave the Include linked graphics checkbox checked, then click the
button.
10. When the final wizard screen appears, click the button.
