1. (a) Explain in brief


i. Hydro dynamic force
ii. Impact of jet
iii. Velocity triangles at inlet and outlet
iv. Work done and efficiency.
(b) A jet 200mm diameter moving at a velocity of 20m/s impinges normally on a series of flat vanes
mounted over a wheel. If the velocity of the vanes is 8 m/s, find
i. the force exerted by the jet on the wheel,
ii. the work done by the jet on the wheel per second and
iii. hydraulic efficiency.

2. (a) Explain the working of a single stage centrifugal pump.


(b) A single acting reciprocating pump has a plunger diameter of 100mm and a stroke of 200mm.
The suction pipe is 80mm in diameter and 6m long. The pump is situated at a height of 3m
above the sump water level. If the pump runs at 30rpm , calculate the absolute pressure head
in the cylinder at the beginning of the suction stroke. The atmospheric pressure head=10.3m of
water.

3. (a) Explain the construction and working of a Lancashire boiler with the help of suitable sketches.
(b) What are the differences between Cornish boiler are Lancashire boiler.

4. (a) Why the safety valves are needed in a boiler? Sketch and describe a Ramsbottom spring loaded
safety valve.
(b) Differentiate between lever safety valve and dead weight safety valve.

5. (a) Distinguish between impulse and reaction turbine.


(b) A reaction turbine running at 360rpm consumes 5kg of steam per second. The leakage is 10% .
The discharge blade tip angle for both moving and fixed blades is 20. The axial velocity of flow
is 0.75 times blade velocity . The power developed by a certain pair is 4.8kW where the pressure
is 2bar and dryness fraction is 0.95 . Find the drum diameter and blades height.

6. (a) What are the essential components of a simple open cycle gas turbine plant?
(b) In a gas turbine plant, operating on Brayton cycle , air enters the compressor at 1bar and 270 C
. The pressure ratio in the cycle is 6. Calculate the maximum temperature in the cycle and the
power developed by the turbine . Assume the turbine work as 2.5 times the compressor work .
Take γ=1.4

7. Give the complete list of hydraulic valves used in hydraulic circuits and explain working principle with
the help of neat sketches.

8. (a) Explain different kinds of kinematic pairs giving examples.


(b) Distinguish machine from mechanism.

1. (a) Explain about the construction and working of Francis turbine with a neat sketch .
(b) A double jet Pelton wheel is required to generate 7500kW when the available head at the base of
the nozzle is 400m. The jet is deflected through 1650 and the relative velocity of the jet reduced
by 15% in passing over the buckets. Determine:
i. Diameter of each jet
ii. Total flow rate
iii. Force exerted by the jet on buckets in tangential direction. Assume the generator efficiency
of 95%, Overall efficiency of 80% cv =0.97 ku =0.46.

2. Explain the following:

(a) Priming of centrifugal pumps


(b) Multistage centrifugal pump.
(c) Performance characteristic curves.

3. (a) What is a steam boiler? How they are classified?


(b) Explain with a neat sketch the working of a La-Mont boiler.

4. (a) What is the function of a super heater? Describe Sugden’s super heater.
(b) Explain why air preheater are used in a high pressure boilers.

5. (a) Explain the term compounding of steam turbines? what are the different methods of reducing
rotor speed?
(b) A reaction turbine running at 360rpm consumes 5kg of steam per second . The leakage is 10%

compression ratio is 4 and specific heat at constant pressure for the working fluid is 1kJ/kg.k

1. (a) Derive the expression for specific speed of a turbine.


(b) A turbine develops 7725kW under a head of 28m at 140rpm. Calculate the specific speed of the
turbine and state the type of turbine.

2. (a) Enumerate the salient features of differences between the centrifugal and reciprocating pumps.
(b) Show that the work saved in overcoming friction in the pipe lines by fitting air vessel is 84.8% in
single acting reciprocating pump.

3. (a) Describe with a neat diagram the construction and working of a Babcock and Wilcox water tube
boiler.
(b) What are the differentiating features between a water tube and a fire tube boiler?

4. (a) What is the purpose of a steam stop valve? Explain its working.
(b) Explain the functions of blow off cock and feed check valve.

5. (a) Define the degree of reaction as applied to a reaction turbine .Show that for a Parson’s reaction
turbine , the degree of reaction is 50%.
(b) In one stage of a reaction steam turbine both the fixed and moving blades have inlet and outlet
blade .tip angles of 350 and 200 respectively. The mean blade speed is 80 m/s and the steam
consumption is 22,500 kg/hr .Determine the power developed in the pair, if the isentropic heat
drop for the pair is 235 kJ/kg.

6. (a) Differentiate between a closed cycle gas turbine and an open cycle gas turbine .
(b) A constant pressure open cycle gas turbine plant works between temperatures range of 150 C and
7000 C and pressure ratio of 6. Find the mass of air circulating in the installation , if it develops
1100kW. Also find the heat supplied by the heating chamber.

7. List out and the explain different types of rotary pumps used in hydraulic circuits. Mention the merits
and applications of each pump.

1. (a) Derive an expression for work done per second for flow over a series of radial vanes provided on
the rim of wheel.
(b) An inward flow reaction turbine running at 450rpm has as external diameter of 500mm and a
width of 150mm. If guide vanes are at 150 to the wheel tangent and the absolute velocity of water
at inset is 20m/s. Find a)the discharge of the turbine and b)the vane angle of the runner at inlet.

2. (a) Derive expression for the minimum speed for starting a centrifugal pump.
(b) A centrifugal pump is running at 1000rpm and working against a head of 20m . The rate of flow
through the pump is 0.2m3 /s .The out vane angle of the impeller is 450 and the velocity of flow
at outlet is 2.5m/s .If the manometric efficiency of the pump is 80%, calculate the diameter and
width of impeller at outlet.

3. (a) What is a steam boiler? How they are classified?


(b) What are the differentiating features between a water tube and a fire tube boiler?

4. (a) Describe with a neat sketch, water level indicator for a boiler.
(b) Explain why air preheaters are used in high pressure boiler.

5. (a) Explain the principle of impulse turbine.


(b) The following data is related to a single stage impulse turbine. Steam velocity =60m/s, blade
velocity =250m/s Nozzle angle =200 ; blade outlet angle =250 , neglecting the effect of friction ,
calculate the absolute velocity of steam leaving blade.

6. (a) What is a gas turbine? How does it differ from steam turbine.
(b) A single closed cycle gas turbine installation works between the temperature limits of 300K and
1000K and pressure units of 1 bar and 5 bar. If 1.25kg of air is circulated per second, determine
the power developed by the turbine. For air take cp =1.008 kJ/kg K and γ=1.4.

7. List out & explain the different types of rotary pumps used in hydraulic circuits, Mention the merits
and applications of each pump.

8. (a) Explain completely, partially and incompletely constrained motion of a kinematic pair with ex-
ample.
(b) What do you mean by degree of freedom of a kinematic pair? How the pairs are classified? Give
examples.
