(b) A 4 Pole lap wound armature has 840 conductors and flux per pole of 0.02Wb. Calculate
the emf generated, when the machine is running at 1000 rpm.

2. (a) Define efficiency and regulation of Transformers.


(b) A single phase Transformer working at unity power factor has an efficiency of 90% at both
at half load and at full load of 600W. Determine the efficiency at 80% of full load.

3. (a) Explain the principle of operation of alternatives.


(b) Explain the slip-torque characteristics of induction motors.

4. Explain the principle and operation of moving iron repulsion type instruments with neat dia-
gram.

5. (a) How the welding process may be classified ?


(b) What is the purpose of shielding gas in TIG welding ? Explain the TIG welding process
with help of neat sketch.

6. (a) Define a reciprocating steam engine and state how reciprocating steam engines are classi-
fied ?
(b) Explain the working of two stroke I.C engine with neat sketch.

7. (a) What do you mean by multistage compression ? State its advantages.


(b) Find the power transmitted by belt running over a pully of 600mm diameter at 200rpm.
The coefficient of friction between the pulley is 0.25, angle of lap is 1600 and maximum
tension in the belt is 2.5kN.

8. (a) With a sketch, explain the working of a vapour compression refrigeration systems.
(b) What are the different types of bulldozers ? Explain the use of bulldozer as earth moving
equipment.

1. (a) Explain the principle of operation of DC generator.


(b) A 220V DC shunt motor takes a total current of 100A and runs at 1000rpm. The resistance
of the armature winding and of shunt field winding is 0.1Ω and 45Ω respectively. Find the
torque developed by this armature.

2. (a) Explain the principle of operation of single phase transformer.


(b) Calculate the flux in the core of single phase transformer having a primary voltage of
230V, at 50Hz and 50 turns. It the flux density in the core is 1 Tesla, calculate the net
cross sectional area of the core.

3. Explain with the help of suitable diagrams, how a rotating magnetic field is produced in a three
phase induction motor.

4. Explain the principle and operations of PMMC instruments with neat diagram.

5. (a) What are the purposes of fluxes and shielding gases used in welding.
(b) Sketch the three types of flames used in oxyacetylene welding process. Give the uses of
each.

6. (a) Explain the working of a single cylinder double acting steam engine.
(b) Explain the working of four stroke I.C engine with neat sketches.

7. (a) Describe with a neat sketch the construction and working of a single-stage single-acting
reciprocating air compressor.
(b) Obtain an equation for the length of a belt in case of open belt drive.

8. (a) Names the five refrigerants available in the market and list their desirable properties.

respectively. Determine the total armature power developed when working as a motor
taking 20kw input.

2. (a) Derive the emf equation of transformer.


(b) When a single phase transformer is supplied at 400V, 50Hz, the hysteresis loss is found to
be 310W and eddy current loss is 260W. Determine the hysteresis and eddy current losses
when the input voltage to the transformer is 800V, 100Hz.

3. Explain the principle of operation of induction motor in detail.

4. Explain the principle and operation of permanent magnet moving coil instruments with neat
diagram.

5. (a) Give the applications of the welding process.


(b) Explain the submerged arc welding processes with help of neat sketches.

6. (a) Explain the working of impulse and reaction turbines.


(b) Describe with neat sketches the working of a single constant pressure open cycle gas
turbine.

7. (a) Derive an expression for the optimum inter cooling pressure and hence find the expression
for the total indicated work required to run a multistage reciprocating compressor.
(b) Distinguish clearly the difference between an open belt drive and cross belt drive.

i. Specific humidity.

iii. Wet bulb temperature.
(b) How the concrete mixer used in construction work ? Explain commonly used different

3. Define regulation of alternator. Explain the procedure to determine regulation by using syn-
chronous impendence method with neat diagram.

4. Explain the principle and operation of moving iron attraction type instruments with neat
diagram.

(b) Distinguish between welding, brazing and soldering metals.

7. (a) Derive an expression for the shaft work of a reciprocating compressor assuming zero clear-
ance volume.
(b) When a flat belt is about to move over a pulley, show that the ratio of tension in the tight
side and slack side depends upon friction co-efficient and angle of contact.

8. (a) Sketch the layout of an air conditioning system and explain the functions of each compo-
nent in it.
(b) What are the different types of conveyers? How the bucket conveyer is used as material
handling equipment? Explain.
