The s p a c e c r a f t i s an e i g h t - s i d e d s p h e r o i d , 48 i n c h e s
t a l l and 50 i n c h e s i n d i a m e t e r w i t h two sounder a n t e n n a s , one
240 f e e t l o n g and t h e o t h e r 61.5 f e e t l o n g , i n c l u d i n g t h e
spacecraft

number flown by a s i n g l e s a t e l l i t e i n t h e program t o date.,
E i g h t of t h e on-board i n s t r u m e n t s were p r o v i d e d by Canadian
u n i v e r s i t i e s and goveinment a g e n c i e s and t h e remaining four
were p r o v i d e d b y t h e NASA Goddard Space F l i g h t C e n t e r and t h e
U n i v e r s i t y o f Texas.
The s a t e l l i t e w i l l be launched i n t o a c i r c u l a r , n e a r -
p o l a r o r b i t b y a t h r e e - s t a g e thrust-augmented Delta r o c k e t .
The o r b i t p l a n n e d w i l l be 870 s t a t u t e m i l e s above t h e E a r t h
a t an i n c l i n a t i o n of 8 8 . 7 d e g r e e s , w i t h a n o r b i t a l p e r i o d of
114 m i n u t e s .
The i o n o s p h e r e i s a n e l e c t r i f i e d g a s c u r t a i n b e g i n n l n g
a b o u t 35 m i l e s above t h e E a r t h and i s d i v i d e d i n t o f o u r r e g i o n s
o r layers--the D,E, Fl and F2 l a y e r s . The e l e c t r o n d e n s i t y o f
e a c h l a y e r v a r i e s i n a l t i t u d e and amount o f i o n i z a t i o n w i t h
t h e time of day, t h e degree o f s o l a r a c t i v i t y , t h e season of
s a t e l l i t e i s s t i l l operating successfully.
