MINOR PROJECT REPORT

ACKNOWLEDGEMEN
T
For building of this minor project our group took the
help of our department lecturers only, We were trying
to take the help of internet but that help were not
sufficient to complete the project we needed to concern
our lectures and our lecturers guide us in the way that
the project became to easy to complete and we
completed our project easily and successfully.

We took the help of

MCC PANELS
(Motor Control Center Panel)

A motor control assembly of one or

more enclosed sections to a central
control terminal panel board. These
highly efficient panels are effectively
used with motor or submersible pumps
and provide sufficient protection from
overloads and short circuits. These
motor control panel provide central
power switching control various motor
and provide safety to the system as
well as operator.

PCC PANELS
(Power Control Center
Panels)

PCC offered us is considered as the heart of

an electrical system of industry.
These panels are easy to install, operate
and are high in performance and low in
maintenance. Mostly used in electronic based
operations, these panels are used in various
industries like electronic and electrical
industries engineering and automotive
industries.

DOL (Direct On Line

Starter)

A 3-phase induction motor can be started

direct on line i.e. by connecting the rated
three phase voltage to the motor terminals at
the time of starting. This can be done simply
by using a triple pole iron clad (TPIC) switch
but this will not Provide any type of
protection against over load, a thermal
overload and a contactor unit to be used
along with a TPIC switch. The contactor for
can be energized or de-energized by pressing
separate push-buttons starting or stopping
the motor. This system will also provide no.
volt protection to the operator or the
machine driven by the motor.

Reverse Direct On Line

Starter

In some applications, motor is to be run in

one direction for a particular period and then
in opposite direction for some other duration.
The direction of rotation of a three-phase
induction motor can be changed if supply
connection of any of the two phases is
reversed. This can be done by using RDOL
starter.

Star Delta Starter

For the starting of 3-Phase induction motor,
starters are used for reducing the starting
currents. Above 5 H.P. motors, Star/Delta
starters are installed. DOL starter will not
decrease the starting current by connecting
the motor but Star/Delta starter reduces the
in rush of starting current by connecting the
motor winding first in star connections then
switch over to delta connections.

Volt Meter
It is used to measure the amount of voltage in
a circuit or supply. Voltmeter is always
connected in parallel to the circuit or supply
due to its high resistance and low current
Carrying capacity.

Voltage Selector Switch

A device which is used to select the voltage
between the two phases of three phase input
supply given to the control panel.

Ammeter

it is used to measure the amount of current in

a circuit or supply. Ammeter is always
connected in series due to its low resistance
and high current carrying capacity.

Push Buttons

Push buttons are basically used to magnetize

the power contactor. When the push button
is pressed the current flows through power
contactor and energizes it. As the power
contactor is energized it make contact and
completes the circuit. GREEN push button is
used to magnetize the power contactor and
RED push button is used to demagnetize the
power contactor.

Connecting Leads

Connecting leads are generally wires used for

wiring purposes in control panels. Minimum
1.5 mm(square) diameter wire is used for
control wiring and 4mm(square) wire is used
for power wiring.
P a g e | 23

Thimbles or Lugs

Thimbles are used where the open joints of

wires are made to cover or seal that joint an
insulating material made thimbles are used
and also to protect and insulate that open
joint.

CT(Current Transformer)

In Electrical engineering , a current

transformer (CT) is used for measurement of
electric currents. Current transformer
together with Voltage transformer (Potential
transformer (PT)), are known as instrument
transformers. When in a circuit is too high to
directly apply to measuring instruments, a
current transformer produces a reduce
current accurately proportional to the current
in the circuit, which can be conveniently
connected to measuring and recording
instrument. Current transformer are
commonly used in metering and protective
relays in the electrical power industry.

PT(Potential Transformer)
P a g e | 26

Potential transformers are instrument

transformers, they have a large number of
secondary turns and a fewer number of
primary turns they are used to increase the
range of voltmeters in electrical substations
and generating substations. They are also
known as voltage transformer used for line
and circuit protection.

Power contactor
P a g e | 28

An electrical relay used to control the flow of

power in a circuit. It works on the principle of
Electro Magnetic Induction (EMI) as the
supply is given at the input it start working as
an electro magnet and get attached to the
metal surface, hence start conducting. When
the supply is made off it become
demagnetized and detach from the metal
surface and stop conducting.

Auxiliary Block (NC)

Auxiliary contact is used to made an auxiliary
function. NC(Normally Closed) auxiliary
contact is used to have normally closed
function as the push button is pressed.

Connecting terminals
It is used at the end of the wire to connect
the wire safely to the components used in the
circuit.

Thermal Overload Relay

This relay is mainly used where the risk of
short circuit is high. As this relay contain a
thermal sensitive tripping mechanism. So, if
short circuit occurs the temperature of wire
rises and wire in the TOLR gets heat up and
causes the tripping of the wire connected to
it. Hence TOLR works.

Miniature Circuit Breaker

(MCB)

MCB also works on the magnetic principle as

well as on thermal principle during short
circuit it works on the principle of TOLR as
explained above and during overload the
magnetic field in MCB become high from
finite value and the coil connected to this
field trips and opens the circuit.
