RE: NOMINEES FOR SEVENTEENTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT
Dear Governor Ritter:
I am writing on behalf of the Colorado Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and
Transgender Bar Association to provide our input and endorsement
regarding the nominees for two judicial vacancies in the
Seventeenth Judicial District.
We completed our endorsements process for all nominees but one;
we were unable to reach Teri Vasquez. For the other five nominees,
we conducted interviews and reviewed their written materials. All
five were interested in our endorsement.
The candidates we interviewed are all highly qualified individuals.
The Nominating Commission should be proud once again for the
fine slate of lawyers it has provided for your consideration. We also
believe these five candidates understand the legal challenges that
GLBT community faces and would be fair and impartial in that
regard.
Ultimately, however, we voted to endorse Cynthia J. Kowert and
Craig Welling. We have previously endorsed Ms. Kowert and
continue to be impressed by her background, experience and strong
sense of fairness. She will make an excellent judge. We were
similarly impressed by Mr. Welling’s unique and diverse
background, including his policy experience, as well as his prior
civil and government practices. Mr. Welling has a notable
enthusiasm for this position and a demonstrated commitment to
public service. He will make a highly competent, thoughtful judge.
