year on 14 November. The date marks the birthday of

World Diabetes Day is represented by the blue circle, the global symbol of diabetes.

Each year World Diabetes Day highlights a theme related to diabetes.

The current theme is ‘Diabetes Education and Prevention,’ a broad theme that
covers the five-year

period from 2009 to 2013 World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide. It brings
together

millions of people in over 160 countries, uniting the global diabetes community to
produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness.

India has launched a new initiative to tackle the rising epidemic of diabetes in the country, which
currently affects over 50 million people. India has the second largest number of people with
diabetes in the world, second only to China.

The government is injecting Rs 500 crore into a programme that will offer free diabetes
screening to people living in urban slums and rural districts, two of the populations hardest hit by
the epidemic. The project will initially be implemented in 100 districts in 20 states. A total of 33
cities have been selected for the first phase of the programme.
POLIO

The bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) is proving to be a potent weapon in the global battle to
eradicate the disease.

Developed to stop transmission of the type 1 and type 3 wild polioviruses simultaneously, bOPV
was introduced in all four polio-endemic countries -- Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan --
in late 2009 and early 2010. It has helped reduce the incidence of polio in India to 39 cases as of
26 October, compared to 498 for the same period in 2009. The number of cases in Nigeria has
fallen to 8 from 382 for that period.

"There’s been the largest ever year-to-year drop in polio cases following the use of bOPV," said
Dr. Bruce Aylward, director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) at the World
Health Organization.
school for tribal children

The Kavi Jagannath Jadhav Guruji Ashram Shaala, a school for tribal children, is supported by
the Rotary Club of Thane North. Students ages 6 to 15, who might not otherwise receive any
education, live and eat at the school, and classrooms double as dorm rooms.

The Rotarians have made several improvements, such as installing a water purification system
and providing a library, a science laboratory, and play equipment. The club also has donated
funds to buy uniforms and blankets.

Roy Sommerey, of the Rotary Club of Kelowna, B.C., Canada, took this photo during his
January vacation in India.

“In North America, you register for school and send your kids, and everyone takes it for
granted,” he says. “In India, for aboriginals, you don’t take anything like that for granted.”
Children's day, in hindi known as "Bal Diwas", falls on November 14th every year and for good reason.
Children's day in India is celebrated on Pandit Nehru's birthday who was born on November14 1889, as
a day of fun and frolic, a celebration of childhood, children and Nehruji's love for them.

Chacha Nehru as the children fondly referred to him, was fond of both children and roses. In fact he often
compared the two, saying that children were like the buds in a garden. They should be carefully and
lovingly nurtured, as they were the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow. He felt that children
are the real strength of a country and the very foundation of society. He was the ‘beloved’ of all the
children who gave him the endearing name of ‘Chacha Nehru’.
