LAB 1/Assignments: Power System Design

Instructor: Dr. J G Singh

Submission Date: September 28th, 2010

Objective: Overall objective of the lab is to learn the basic concept of power system design and
operation.

Design a configuration plan for power system in Happy Island shown in Fig 1. Run load flow for
transmission system that is designed. Using PSAT program, first with base case and next to
improve the system by using capacitor, parallel line and power generation, for a load increased
case, compare the results.

System Description:

Figure 1: Happy Island power system area.

Figure 1 illustrates system area of Happy Island. In Fig. 1, numbers 1 to 5 refer to

load/generation points. The bus data in table 1 list values for P, Q and V at each bus for base
case. Parameters of all power generation and capacitor are showed in table 2. The
transmission lines length from point to point in the system are listed in table 3. The
transmission line parameters are listed in table 4. The system operates within voltage
limits of ± 5% of normal and thermal limits of 100 MVA for all lines.

Questions:

Base case 1: System with base loads

Find the best configuration plan for power system in Happy Island of Figure 1. Feature and
limitation of the system is given below:
• Voltage levels 230 kV, 50Hz
• Number of power generation 2 units (including swing bus)
• Voltage limit ± 5 %
• Number of lines 6 lines

(a) Report on voltage and phase angle of all buses in the system.
(b) Find the percentage of voltage regulation of all buses in the system.
(c) Find the current, real power and reactive power flow in each transmission line.
(d) Find the total real power loss and reactive power loss in the whole system.

Comment:
1. Which generator will deliver the addition power?
2. Which lines will be loaded more heavily?
3. Which line reaches its security limit first?
4. What happens if you continue to increase the load at Bus 4?
5. Watch the voltage at bus 4. What happens to the voltage?

Case 2: System with load increase

From base case, if the load at bus 4 in the system is increased as shown in table 5, improve
the power system performance, in terms of voltage, by using capacitors, parallel line, power
generation or combination of all of them. Feature and limitation of the system is given below:
• Voltage levels 230 kV, 50Hz
• Number of power generation 3 units (including swing bus)
• Voltage limit ± 5 %
• Number of lines 7 lines

Compare the results and comment on them.
