AUTO-QE USER MANUAL

INTRODUCTION
Auto-QE Ver 3.0 s a first ever-estimating package, which allows users to generate estimates directly from Electronic plans, faster and more
accurately than any other software package in the market. It has a short learning curve, and does not require use of a CAD program. Gone
are the days when you measure dimensions from drawing, calculate quantities and enter details in Excel and spend countless hours
entering item description in Excel or Word. There will be no more need to search through large database to identify the correct item code
and descriptions. Auto-QE will generate detailed cost estimate in Excel including detailed measurement and item description only with few
mouse clicks. The salient features of Auto-QE are
A CAD PACKAGE WITHOUT EXPENSIVE CAD SOFTWARE
Auto-QE comes to you with a tailor made Cad Module, which opens and display building plan Drawing in universal DXF format with all
necessary commands to draw, view and delete entities with commands similar to popular cad programmes lile AutoCAD. It displays
Architectural drawing in one window and components added to Auto-QE database in another Window with better display features so that
components added can be easily identified. Cad module has commands with which you can draw beams by selecting columns and draw
Footings by selecting columns from the drawing.

0 0

Fast and easy takeoff of quantity and measurement details from the electronic plans.
Auto-QE is so powerful that you need only five mouse clicks and milliseconds to get measurement details from the drawing. Two clicks
to specify the drawing parameters such as object type and layer from the drop down list and two clicks to mark two corners of the building
and a final click on Generate Boq menu Auto-QE will automatically count the quantities and measurement details from the drawing and
output the details in an Excel spread sheet. Auto-QE has incorporated powerful logic to make even simple methods of data collection
from drawing faster and easier. For instance Autocad Quick Select command can easily count the number of columns, doors etc from the
drawing by specifying drawing properties. But it will not be possible to get length and breadth measurement details of the selected objects.
Auto-QE will calculate the measurement details such as length/breadth/perimeter etc irrespective of the way the object is drawn in the
drawing viz Block, Solid, Polyline etc
Complete Elimination of reference to DSR
Though the DSR contains more than 2000 items many of them are rarely used. Auto-QE completely eliminates the need for referring to
DSR by providing a generic description for more than 1000 DSR items. Select from the property list box and Auto-QE automatically
identifies the item code and description and rate from generic description. It also gives you complete freedom to modify item description
and code but also add new DSR/NSR items very easily.

AUTO-QE USER MANUAL
Minimal Data Entry.
Data Entry is the time consuming activity in Quantity Estimation process. Auto-QE eliminates this activity to such an extent that it is
possible to get detailed estimate in Excel with Detailed Measurement Details of each item in LBH format because
Component ID is assigned automatically with facility to assign beam, column ID based on Grid ID and to pick room names from the
drawing.
Auto-QE works out the quantities automatically based on plan measurement of the item in the drawing and transfer the details to Excel.
Rich and innovative user-friendly features.
Auto-QE comes to you with many powerful and rich Graphical user interfaces. For instance, Auto-QE generate walls, slabs, plinth
protection, chajjas automatically with mouse click. The cumbersome, time consuming and error prone process of editing various
properties such as finish, concrete type, flooring etc has been made simpler and stress free because of the rich Graphical user interface of
Auto-QE. Simply click on the item in the property box and the selected object will be highlighted in the drawing or select multiple or
single object from the drawing and the properties of selected objects will be listed. Change the desired property by clicking on the property
list box and editing will be accomplished in no time with minimal stress.
Automatic calculation
Though calculations to be done in Quantity estimation involves only multiplication and addition, the process is cumbersome and error
prone, simply because of the huge quantities involved and number of intricate checks to be carried out. For instance while calculating
beam shuttering quantity the engineer has to check abutting slab thickness of each abutting slab and make adjustments accordingly.
Similarly in case of brickwork, plastering and finishing quantities of room has to take into account window, door and plain openings and
lintel thickness in each room. Auto-QE does many of these calculation automatically as under.
Automatic identification of door / window openings.
Auto identification of abutting slab thickness for beams to calculate shutter quantities.
Auto identification of wall position under beams to identify plaster type.
Auto Identification of Internal and External beams/ Columns/ Walls.
Auto identification of External perimeter of building to calculate plinth protection.
Automatic calculation of earthwork quantities such as excavation and filling from footing details.
Minimal learning curve.
Probably the most powerful feature of Auto-QE is that no previous experience is required in Cad packages. There are only two sets of
distinct screens namely marking the item and adding/modifying items. User needs to learn only three actions namely zoom/pan in the
drawing, selecting items from drawing and changing property by clicking from list boxes in each of the screen. The screens and user action
required for all building objects such as beam, column, door, windows. Flooring etc are identical and therefore once he learns few
operations he would have mastered Auto-QE.
Flexibility
Though the powerful feature of Auto-QE is its ability to derive data directly from the drawing it has added flexibility of preparing detailed
estimate by manually entering data for any or all items of BOQ.

AUTO-QE USER MANUAL

MARK COMPONENTS
The most powerful feature of Auto-QE is its ability to takeoff of quantity and measurement details from the electronic plans. You
do not need expensive Drawing Software such as AutoCad as Auto-QE works with drawings saved in universal DXF format and all
drawing software invariably has provision to save the drawing in DXF format. So the first step to use this powerful feature is have
Architectural Drawing of floor plans in DXF format.
Usage of Drawing, Editing and Viewing
commands of Auto-QE is exactly same as in
popular Cad Package such as AutoCad and
therefore even persons with little knowledge
of Autocad will have no difficulties at all. In
fact Auto-QE is a full-fledged drawing
package with its features limited and tailor
made to Quantity take off. Some of the
features incorporated are much more
powerful than AutoCad. For instance select
grid lines and Auto-QE draws beams
between columns of specified width,
automatically within few seconds. Similarly
select columns from the drawing and footings
are drawn in seconds.
Auto-QE displays two drawing windows viz
Cad Drawing Window and Auto-QE drawing
window. In Cad drawing window the
Architectural Drawing and also Components
added to Auto-QE database are displayed. In
Auto-QE drawing window only components
added to Auto-QE database are displayed. In
Auto-QE window the added components are
displayed as filled polygon where as in Cad
drawing they are displayed as poly lines. Cad
drawing Window will be visible only when
you select any of the mark components
option. When mark component dialogue box
is closed, only Auto-QE Drawing window
will be visible.
Auto-QE-requires that various components
such as columns, beams etc are drawn as
polygons or poly lines in the drawing. As the
Architect draws objects in different ways,
Auto-QE has incorporated many innovative
features to automate marking of polygons.
For instance Columns may be drawn as Line
or as block or as poly line or as solid in the
drawing. To convert the columns, user has to
specify the object type and layer and Screen
Select from the drawing and all Columns will
be marked as polygons.. If necessary, draw
individual Poly Lines using Draw Rectangle /
Draw Poly Line options. Once the
components are marked in the drawing, they
are automatically added to Auto-QE database

MARK ROOM
OVERVIEW
Drawing internal dimensions of the room is the most important activity of marking
components as the internal dimensions are used in Auto Generating, Walls and
Plinth Protection. So the same has to be done accurately. For instance two adjacent
room lines are to be exactly parallel as they represent walls. While marking rooms if
these lines differ in angle even by 0.1 0 the walls generated may not be exactly
parallel the walls generated may become multi cornered polygons instead of
rectangular polygon.
If room internal is not marked as poly line in Architectural drawing Marking Room
is likely to take most of the time in data entry. Auto-QE has incorporated number
of options to draw Room easily and quickly. Apart from drawing a rectangular /
polygon drawing commands Auto-QE can draw room polygon by simply clicking
any where inside the room if the rooms are four cornered.
Whenever a new room is added, the values specified in the property List / Text

message indicating the same will be displayed. This happens because normally wall lines are not drawn in Door / Window
locations so wall lines will not be present if clicked point is opposite to a widow or door.. Due to the same reason the rooms

AUTO-QE USER MANUAL
UPDATE
OVERVIEW
Though calculations to be done in Quantity estimation involves only multiplication and addition, the process is cumbersome and error
prone, simply because of the huge quantities involved and number of intricate checks to be carried out. For instance while calculating
beam shuttering quantity the engineer has to check abutting slab thickness of each abutting slab and make adjustments accordingly.
Similarly in case of brickwork, plastering and finishing quantities of room has to take into account window, door and plain openings and
lintel thickness in each room. Auto-QE does many of these calculation automatically as under. Some of the calculation is done
automatically and some are done through Update option.
Update option is applicable only if components have been added through drawing. If entered manually the details have to be specified in
the appropriate data entry text boxes. Update option has to be executed for every floor individually.
Update Column Outer
Select Update→Column Outer from Main Menu to automatically identify external columns and also external projection area of the
column to calculate external plaster / finish / cladding of columns external face.
Update Beam Wall Position
Select Update→Beam Wall Position from Main Menu to automatically identify wall thickness under each beam and also location of
the wall namely whether wall is flush on one side, both sides or not on both sides and no wall underneath. This identification is done
because the plastering of beam face area flush with wall is included in room plaster as 12 / 15 mm plaster and when not flush plastering
area is considered as 6 mm plaster on RCC work.
Update Beam Slab Thickness
Select Update→Beam Slab Thickness from Main Menu to automatically identify thickness of slab adjacent to beam on two sides
and make the necessary deductions for shuttering and also plaster area of beam side area.
Update Wall Beam Position
Select Update→Wall Position from Main Menu to automatically identify thickness of slab beam above the wall and make deductions
in brick work.
Update Wall Beam Position
Select Update→Wall Opening from Main Menu to automatically identify wall / window openings in the wall and make deduction in
brick work and also calculate lintel quantities above the openings.
Update Plinth Protection
Select Update→ Plinth Protection from Main Menu to automatically identify outer length of Plinth Protection Polygons for
calculating Brick Edging Length.
Update Room ID
Room ID is required in case of items such as Platform, Cup Board, Loft Slab, Stair case etc to identify finish, deduction of slab etc. Click
on Update Room ID Tool Bar Button in individual component’s Edit Dialogue Box to carry out the same.

Automatic Updates
The following updates are done automatically while BOQ is generated.
1. All Earth Work Calculation such as excavation and filling.
2. Identify room openings to calculate, plaster, dado quantities. The net plaster area is worked out after deducting opening area and
adding jamb plaster area.
3. Slab Thickness in room to make necessary deduction in plaster and finishing areas. In case of large rooms covering more than 2
slabs of differing thickness, thickness of any one slab within the room only will be calculated.

GENERATE
OVERVIEW
Some of the components such as Beams, Slab, Plinth Protection are not normally shown in Architectural Drawing. Though wall lines can
be identified from the drawing, they will not be present as polygons as required by Auto-QE. Auto-QE automatically marks Slab, Walls as
polygon and Plinth Protection and adds them to database with single click on Generate Tool Bar Button.
Generate Slab
Select Generate→Slab from Main Menu to automatically mark the slab and add to the database. Before using this option rooms have to
be marked. If no Beam is drawn then entire area shall be marked as slab. This option can be used at any time. If slabs are already present
old slabs shall be deleted and Slabs shall be generated afresh.
Generate Wall
Select Generate→Wall from Main Menu to automatically mark the Wall and add to the database. Before using this option rooms have
to be marked. Walls generation will be based on the assumption that all outer walls are 230 mm thick.. This option can be used at any time.
If Walls are already present old Walls shall be deleted and Walls shall be generated afresh.
Generate Plinth Protection
Select Generate→Plinth Protection from Main Menu to automatically mark the Plinth Protection and add to the database. Before
using this option rooms have to be marked. Plinth Protections generation will be based on the assumption that all outer Plinth Protections
are 230 mm thick.. This option can be used at any time. If Plinth Protections are already present old Plinth Protections shall be deleted and
Plinth Protections shall be generated afresh.
Generate BOQ
Apart from the enormous saving in time achieved by Auto-QE by taking off quantities from Electronic Plans, the auto BOQ generation
capability of Auto-QE saves as much time if not more whether components are added to database from drawing or manually. Detailed
estimate and floor wise detailed measurement for components are generated in Excel work book in less than a minute with a single mouse
click on Generate BOQ Menu.
Select Generate→BOQ from Main Menu to automatically generate BOQ. The BOQ / Detailed Estimate will be copied to a Excel
Work Sheet named ‘BOQ.XLS’ and placed in Sub Directory ‘temp’ under the directory the directory where the programme is installed.
Save this file in a different name in different path for future use. Before generating BOQ Excel files named ‘SCMAST.XLS’,’_BOQ.XLS’
and ‘BOQ.XLS’ should not be open in Excel. If such a file is open, close these files and Generate BOQ again. A message box will be
displayed advising closing files.
In the Excel Work Book the detailed measurement of each component is transferred to a separate work sheet. This work sheet shows not
only detailed measurement in LBH format but also summary of BOQ items in the work sheet. This summary carried over to a separate
work sheet named “Abstract’ which gives the quantity carried over from each worksheet and also total quantity for each item.
Finally the BOQ / Detailed Estimate with automatically generated Serial No, Item Description, Unit, Rate and Amount with totaling
fully formatted is transferred to worksheet named ‘BOQ’.
Generate Part BOQ
Select Generate→Part BOQ from Main Menu to Generate BOQ
for selected items floor wise.
Select components for which BOQ is needed from the Part BOQ
Dialogue Box and click generate BOQ Tool Bar Button.

AUTO-QE USER MANUAL
DEFAULT PROPERTIES
OVERVIEW
The provision default properties facilitate fast data entry. For instance in a building if 75 % rooms have same flooring enter that flooring as
default flooring and Auto-QE shall assign this value to any newly added floor. Some of the default values are assigned to the component
while adding a new item and are editable. For instance default RCC type for major components such as footing, beam, column, slabs are
editable but minor component such as chajja, and fins are not editable. Editable default values will appear in Component Edit Dialogue
Box. While working out BOQ Auto-QE takes the value of Editable default Value from the item database and non editable default values
from the Default Values database. Therefore you can make any changes in non-Editable default value at any time and get BOQ according
to the new value. For example the lintel bearing, PCC thickness / projection can be changed at any time and BOQ will calculate quantities
/ assign item code as per current values.
Default Editable values already added to component shall not be changed when these default values are changed subsequently. But new
items added will be assigned the new values.
Default items are split into different categories for easy identification and data entry. Select the Category from the Default Menu the
Default Values Dialogue will be displayed with the currently assigned default values. Enter new values as required. Saving will be done
automatically when this dialogue box is closed.

ASSIGN CODE TO GENERIC DESCRPTION
OVERVIEW
One of the most attractive features of Auto-QE is assigning item code based on Generic Description of item. Code assignment provides
for all variation in the particular item code. For instance RCC item in DSR is given as up to Plinth as one item, extra up to four floors as
another item and for extra floors another item. In case of flooring the sub items are extra for dado, pigment, chequer, white cement etc.
Auto-QE allows you to assign code for all variation for a single description.
Auto-QE comes to you with more than 1000 item codes already assigned. It is so flexible and easy that it allows you to edit any of the item
