Tawbah [Repentance]:

First Step on the Path of Inner Purification

O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you
have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky
and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim Wa Sall Allahu ta ‘ala ‘alaa Sayyidinaa wa Mawlaana
Muhammadin w ‘alaa Aalihit Taahireen was Ashaabihil Akrameen wa ‘alaa Ummatihi
ajma’eena birahmatika Yaa Arhamar Rahimeen.

Concerning Tawbah which literally means to return or to turn back, as in turning back
around and facing the right direction after being lost (in sin) and walking in the wrong
direction, Allahu ta ‘ala says:

ۙ
Allah has promised those who have imaan (faith) and do good works [that] theirs shall be
forgiveness of sins, and a mighty reward; [Surah Maidah;5:9]

If any one does evil or wrongs his own soul but afterwards seeks God's forgiveness, he will
find God Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Surah 4 Verse 110

Sayyidinaa Ibn Abbas Radhi Allahu ‘anhu commented about this verse saying that Allah
informs His servants of His forgiveness, forbearing generosity and expansive mercy. So,
whoever commits a sin, whether major or minor, ‘but afterwards seeks Allah’s forgiveness,
he will find Allah Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful’ even if his sins were greater than the
heavens, the earth and the mountains.

It is also narrated by Ahmad that Sayyidinaa Abu Bakr Radhi Allahu ‘anhu said that Prophet
Muhammad (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) said:

‘No Muslim commits a sin and then performs ablution, prays two rak’ahs and begs Allah for
forgiveness for that sin, but He forgives him.’

If a believer makes mistakes, and we all do, we have to offer sincere repentance to be
entitled to forgiveness. In Islam, sincere repentance is known as tawbah. This requires us
to;

 Recognize and admit we have made a mistake

 Ask forgiveness from Allah and if the sin was against a person, we have to ask
forgiveness from that person also

2
 We try to atone for the sin we have done if possible, by for example, returning
money if we had stolen it
 We make the intention never to do the sin again

Al Imam Qushayri Radhi Allahu ‘anhu mentions in “Risaalatul Qushayriyya”. Allah says,
“Turn all together towards Allah [in repentance] O Believers that you may attain bliss
[24:23]. It has been reported on the authority of Sayyidinaa Anas bin Malik Radhi Allahu
‘anhu that Rasulullah Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim said, “The one who repents
from sin is like one without sin, and if Allah loves a servant, sin does not adhere to him.”
The he recited, “Innallaha yuhibbut tawwabeena wa yuhibbul mutatahhireen” [Indeed
Allah loves these who turn unto him [in repentance}, and He loves those who purify
themselves] [2:222]. It was asked, “Ya Rasulullah [Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim],
what is the sign of repentance?” He replied, “Remorse.”

We are told many times in the Al Qur'an Majid that Allahu ta ‘ala is the Oft-returning, Most
Merciful. We understand from this that Allah is waiting for us to turn to Him in sincere
repentance. If we are sincere, then Allah will have mercy on us.

We are also advised to ‘follow a bad deed with a good deed’. This means, as soon as we
realize we have done something wrong, we should immediately try to do something good.

We should try to maintain the five times daily prayer, salaat. This builds our relationship
with Allah. During the prayer we recite the Fatiha in which we ask Allah for guidance. In a
hadith Qudsi (conversation between Allah and His Prophet which is not part of Al Qur'an
Majid), it is explained that the prayer is divided into two parts, part is for Allah and part is
for the worshipper. Allah promises to give the worshipper what she or he asks for –
guidance! It is also necessary to read the Qur’an to understand and implement this
guidance from Allah in our daily lives.

Both Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record the hadith of Abu Sa’id (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu)
that Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) told about the man who
killed ninety-nine people. Later on, he regretted it and asked a worshipper, among the
Children of Israel, whether he could repent. This worshiper told him no! So, he killed him,
thus, completing one hundred. Then he asked one of their scholars whether he could
repent. He said: ‘What is stopping you from repenting?’ Then he told him to go to a town
where Allah was worshipped. He set out for that town, but death came to him while he was
on the road. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. So Allah
commanded them to measure the distance between the two towns, and the place where he
died. Whichever (town) he was closer to, when he died, was the one to which he belonged.
They found he was closer to the town he was heading for. Thus, the angels of mercy took
him. It was said that when he was dying, he moved himself - towards that town - while
Allah commanded the good town to move closer to him and the other town to move away.

3
On the other hand, Al Imam al-Bukhari recorded that Sayyidinaa Ibn Abbas Radhi Allahu
‘anhu said that some of the people of shirk (associating partners with Allah) killed many
people and committed zina, (illegal intimate relations) to a great extent. they came to
Sayyidinaa Rasuli Akram (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) and said: ‘What you are
saying and calling us to is good; if only you could tell us that there is an expiation (way of
making amends) for what we have done.’ Then, the following verses were sent down:

Those who, when they spend, are not extravagant and not niggardly, but hold a just
(balance) between those (extremes); Those who invoke not, with God, any other god, nor
slay such life as God has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; - and
any that does this (not only) meets punishment.
(But) the Penalty on the Day of Judgment will be doubled to him, and he will dwell therein
in ignominy, - Unless he repents, believes, and works righteous deeds, for Allah will change
the evil of such persons into good, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Surah 25 Verses
67 – 70

Further Allahu ta ‘ala says,

ۙ ۞
ۙ

4
Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of
God: for God forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

"Turn ye to our Lord (in repentance) and bow to His (Will), before the Penalty comes on
you: after that ye shall not be helped. Surah 39 Verses 53 - 54

We can understand from what has been said here that Allah forgives all sins provided that
a person repents. Additionally, one must not despair of the mercy of Allah, even if their sins
are many and great, for the door of repentance and mercy is expansive. Allahu ta ‘ala says:

Know they not that Allah doth accept repentance from His votaries and receives their gifts
of charity, and that God is verily He, the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful? Surah 9 Verse 104

The doors of Tawbah remain open as long as Allahu ta ‘ala gives breath.

When we do, we should try to live as Muslims, that is, fulfilling all our obligations as
Muslims. As our imaan (faith) increases, so our knowledge, understanding and practicing of
Islam improves Insha’Allah. One should renew repentance both when one remembers past
sins and when one falls into them again:

(a) If one remembers a past sin it is recommended to renew one's remorse and seeking
forgiveness, while being thankful to Allah for the success of leaving the sin; and
(b) If one falls into the same sin again it is obligatory to renew one's repentance, even if one
keeps falling into the sin repeatedly.

The scholars’ caution, however, that one is not expected to try to bring to mind all one's
past sins and repent from them. Rather, a general repentance from past sins is both valid
and sufficient.

Some Key Issues Related to Repentance

(1) One shouldn't leave repentance if one keeps falling into the sin. Rather, one should keep
renewing one's repentance--while striving to fulfill its conditions of sincere remorse,
leaving the sin, and resolving never to return.

Often, sins are the manifestations of bad habits that have crept into our lives, and it takes
repeated renewal of resolve to rid oneself of them. The Messenger of Allah (Sall Allahu
‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) reminded us in many hadiths that, "Allah continues accepting

5
the repentance of a servant until they take their very last breath." [Tirmidhi (3460) and
Ahmad (5885), from Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him)]
(2) The key to successful repentance is not merely resolving to leave the sin, but to figure
out what is leading to the sin, and to take the positive means to stay away from the causes
of the sin.
So, for example, if one finds oneself watching impermissible things when using the internet
alone at night in one's basement, then successful repentance would entail changing one's
internet use such that the matters leading one to sin are avoided, while also fulfilling the
conditions of sincere repentance (namely, remorse, leaving the sin, and resolving never to
return).
The early Muslims used to say, "Whoever considers consequences is safe."

Sincere Repentance:

Allah Most High says,

"Turn towards Allah, O believers, every one of you, so at you may be successful." (24:31)

And He says,

ۙ
Seek ye the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance; that He may grant you
enjoyment, good (and true), for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace on all
who abound in merit! But if ye turn away, then I fear for you the penalty of a great day:
(11:3)

Further Allahu ta ‘ala says,

6
ۙ ۙ

O ye who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance: In the hope that your Lord will
remove from you your ills and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, - the Day
that Allah will not permit to be humiliated the Prophet and those who believe with him. Their
Light will run forward before them and by their right hands, while they say, "Our Lord!
Perfect our Light for us, and grant us Forgiveness: for Thou hast power over all things."
(66:8)

The Nabiyy (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) said, “The one who repents from sin is
like the one who never sinned.” [Ibn Maja (3240)]

He also said, “Remorse is repentance.” [Ibn Maja (4242) and Ahmad (3387)]

Commenting on this Hadith Imam Qushayri states, “Someone has stated,”By the saying,
“Remorse is an act of repentance”, he meant that the major portion of repentance is
remorse, just as he [Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim said, “Pilgrimage is ‘Arafat.” That
is the greatest part of its elements is the standing at ‘Arafat, not that there are no other
elements of Pilgrimage [Hajj]. So his Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim saying,”Remorse
is an act of repentance”, means that the greatest part of the elements of repentance is
remorse. [Risaalatul Qushayriyya: (Qushayri’s Epistle) translated as,”Principles of Sufism”]

Abu Hurayra (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi
wa Aalihi wa sallim) said, "Allah will turn towards anyone who turns in repentance before
the sun rises from the place it set." [Muslim]

Imam Barkawi, the great Ottoman [Uthmani] Hanafi faqih, grammarian, and Sufi, defined
repentance (tawba) in his Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya as,

“Going back from the desire to sin, with the determination of not returning to it, in exaltation
of Allah and out of fear of His punishment.” [al-Bariqa fi Sharh al-Tariqa, 3.139]

The Conditions for Repentance

Concerning the conditions of repentance Al Imam Qushayri Radhi Allahu ‘anhu mentions,
“The master Abu ‘Ali ad Daqqaq Radhi Allahu ‘anhu, said “Repentance is divided into three
parts. The first part is Tawba [repentance], the middle is Inaba [to turn to Allahu ta ‘ala]
and the last is Awba [return].” He places Tawba at the beginning, Awba [return] at the end

7
and Inaba [to turn to Allahu ta ‘ala] between the two. Whoever repents out of a desire for
[divine] reward is in the state of Inaba. Whoever repents for the sake of obeying the Divine
Command, neither for the sake of reward nor for the fear of punishment, is in the state of
Awba.

It is also said, “Tawba is the quality of the Believers”. As Allahu ta ‘ala says, “Turn [Tubu] all
together towards Allah in repentance O Believers” [24:31]. Inaba is the quality of the saints
and those drawn nigh to Allahu ta ‘ala. Allahu ta ‘ala says, “And those who brought a heart
turned in devotion [munib] [to Him]. (50:33). Awba is the quality of the prophets and
messengers. Allahu ta ‘ala says, “How excellent a servant. Ever did he [Sulaiman ‘alaihi
salaam] turn [Awwab] [to us]” (38:30 and 38:44).

Al Junayd Radhi Allahu ‘anhu stated, “Repentance has three senses.

1. The first is remorse,
2. the second is to resolve to give up reverting to what Allahu ta ‘ala has forbidden;
3. and the third is the righting of grievances [If it relates to the rights of another
person, then to return the rights or property one wrongly took]…

Al Junayd Radhi Allahu ‘anhu went to see as Sari [as Saqati] Radhi Allahu ‘anhu and found
him distraught. He asked, “What happened to you?” As sari replied,”I encountered a youth
and he asked me about repentance. I told him that repentance is that you never forget your
sins,’ Then he contradicted me saying the “repentance is that you do forget your sins.” Al
Junayd said that in his opinion what the youth said was correct and As sari asked him why
he held that opinion. Al Junayd replied,”Because if I were in state of infidelity and then He
delivered me into a state of fidelity, remembrance of infidelity in a state of purity would be
infidelity.” Then As sari fell silent. [Risaalatul Qushayriyya]

So, what is true repentance?

Ibn Hajar mentioned that Qurtubi quoted 23 different definitions of true repentance ( al-
tawba al-nasuh) in his tafsir. Ibn Hajar mentioned the most important of these:

1. Sayyidinaa Umar’s words (Allah be pleased with him) that it is, “To sin and then never to
return to it.”
2. To hate the sin, and the seek forgiveness for it every time it occurs to one, as Sayyidinaa
Hasan al-Basri (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) said.
3. Sayyidinaa Qatada’s words (Allah have mercy on him), “To be genuine and truthful in
one’s repentance,” which is what Imam Bukhari chose as the definition of true repentance
in his chapter heading.
4. To have sincerity in one’s repentance.
5. To be concerned about one’s repentance not being accepted.
6. To be such that it does not need another repentance after it.
7. To be made out of fear and hope, and be accompanied by consistency in worship.
8. Like the seventh, but with the added condition that one deserts those who assisted one in
sin.
8
9. That one’s sin be between one’s eyes. [f: That is, one does not forget it.]

[Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari]

Sayyidul Istighfaar
The Chief Form of Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness:

On the authority of Shaddad ibn Aws, Radhi Allahu ‘anhu, the Prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi Wa
Aalihi Wa Sallam, said, “The chief of prayers for forgiveness is:

0 Allah! You are my Cherisher. There is no deity except You. You have created me and I am
Your servant and as far as possible, I abide by my solemn promise and covenant (which I
made to You). I seek Your protection against the consequences of my wrongdoings. I fully
acknowledge the grace You have bestowed upon me and I confess my faults. So pardon me
my sins as none besides You can pardon sins.

The Nabiyy, Sall Allahu Alaihi Wa Aalihi Wa Sallim, added, “If somebody recites it during
the day with firm faith in it and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the
people of Paradise and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it and dies before
the morning he will be from the people of Paradise.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75, Number 318

9
Benefit: According to the Hadith anyone who recites Sayyidul lstighfaar with conviction
and devotion once during the day or night, and if he happens to die on that day or night he
will surely enter Jannah.

It is for this reason that it has been named Sayyidul Istighfaar meaning The Chief Form of
Repentance.

Salaatul Tasbih
For forgiveness of All Sins

Sayyidinaa Shaykh Abdul Qadir al Jilaani Radhi Allahu ‘anhu on Salatul Tasbih

CONCERNING THE SPECIAL MERIT OF THE RITUAL PRAYER OF GLORIFICATION

[SALAT AT-TASBIH].

As for the special quality of the ritual prayer of glorification [salaat at-tasbih], we learn
from a traditional report, transmitted [by a chain of reliable authorities] from Ibn 'Abbas
(may Allah be well pleased with him and with his father), that Allah's Messenger (Sall
Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) once said to al-'Abbas ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib (Radhi Allahu
‘anhu):

O 'Abbas, my dear uncle! I really must give you a gift! I really must make you a present! I
really must do you a favor! I really must let you know about ten special practices [khisal],
for, if you carry them out, Allah will forgive you your sin, the first and the last of it, the old
and the new, the unintentional and the deliberate, the small and the great, the private and
the public.

You must perform four cycles of ritual prayer [raka'at], reciting in each cycle the Opening
Sura of the Book [Fatihat al-Kitab] and one other Sura.

When you have finished the Qur'anic recitation in the first cycle [rak’ah], and while you are
still standing erect, you must say-fifteen times:

Glory be to Allah,
subhana 'llahi

and praise be to Allah,

wa 'l-hamdu li'llahi

and there is no god but Allah,

wa la ilaha illa 'llahu

10
and Allah is Supremely Great!
wa 'llahu Akbar.

Then you must perform the act of bowing, pronouncing it [the same affirmation] ten times
while you are in the posture of bowing [ruku'].

Then you must raise your head from the act of bowing [rak’ah], and pronounce it ten times.

Then you must perform the act of prostration, and pronounce it ten times.

Then you must raise your head from the posture of prostration [sujud], and pronounce it
ten times.

Then you must perform the [second] act of prostration, and pronounce it ten times.

Then you must raise your head from the posture of prostration [sujud], and pronounce it
ten times.

That all adds up to a total of seventy-five in each cycle [rak’ah]. You must do the same in all
four cycles [raka'at].

If you are able to perform this special prayer once every day, then do so. If you cannot do it
that often, then once every Friday [Yawmul Jumu’ah]. If you cannot do it that often, then
once every month. If you cannot do it that often, then once every year. If you cannot do it
that often, then at least once in your lifetime.

According to another version of this report, the Qur'anic recitation should be:

In the first cycle: the Opening Sura of the Book [Fatihat al-Kitab] and "Sabbihi 'sma Rabbi-
ka 'l-A'la... [Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High...]."

In the second cycle: the Opening Sura of the Book [Fatihat al-Kitab] and "Idha zulzilat...
[When (the earth) is shaken...]."

In the third cycle: the Opening Sura of the Book [Fatihat al-Kitab] and "Qul ya ayyuha 'l-
kafirun... [Say: 'O you unbelievers...']."

In the fourth cycle: the Opening Sura of the Book [Fatihat al-Kitab] and "Qul Huwa 'llahu
Ahad [Say: 'He is Allah, One!']"

According to yet another traditional report, the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa
sallim) once said to Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu):

I really must make you a present! I really must do you a favor! I really must give you a gift!

Benefits of Salaat-ul-Tasbih

11
Our Beloved Prophet Mohammed (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) said to his uncle
(father’s brother) Sayyidinaa Abbaas (Radhi Allahu ‘anhu) Oh uncle shall I not give you
Shall I not grant you Shall I not award you Shall I not do mercy on you When you do 10
things Allah will forgive your sins: of the future and of the past; new and old; those you
have forgotten and those you did knowingly; big and small; hidden and revealed. Then he
(Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Aalihi wa sallim) explained the taught the way to pray Salatul Tasbih
and then said if you can pray this salah once a day, if you cannot pray once a day then every
Friday, and even if this is not possible then once a month and even if this is not possible
then once a year and even if this is not possible then at least once in a lifetime (Abu’
Dawood & Tirmidhi)

How to perform Salatul Tasbih?

This salaat is offered in four rakat at a time and can be read in any part of the day and night
besides Zawal and Sunrise and Sunset makrooh times, keeping in mind the forbidden times
for performing Salat. But it is preferred before Zuhr (Fatawa Alamgeeri)

The Tasbih to be read in Salaat-ul-Tasbih:

" Subhaan Allahi Wal Hamdulillahi Wa Laa ilaha illal Laahu Wallahu Akbar "

Method:
The Goal is to recite above Tasbih 300 times in Four Rakah with the following method.

1) In the first rak’aat, after reading Sana "Subhaana Kallahumma...” read the above
tasbih 15 times.
2) Now recite "Aoodhubillah..., Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim...", Then read sura Fatihah
and a Surah or minimum of three small Ayahs then read the tasbih 10 times again.
3) Go to ruku saying Takbeer (Allahu Akbar), after reciting "Subhaana Rabbiyal
Atheem" minimum of three times read the tasbih 10 times in Ruku.
4) Saying "Samee' Allahu Liman Hamidah Rab-banaa Lakal Hamd" get up from ruku to
qiyaam position. Now read the tasbih 10 times.

5) Go to Sajdah saying Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and after reciting "Subhaana Rabbiyal
A'la" minimum of three times read the tasbih 10 times in Sajdah.
6) Now go after first Sajdah go to Jalsa (sitting position) saying Takbeer (Allahu
Akbar). Sitting in Jalsa read tasbih 10 times.
7) Go to sajda again saying Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and after reciting "Subhaana
Rabbiyal A'la" minimum of three times read the tasbih 10 times in Sajdah again. (75
tasbih total)
8) Get up to begin 2nd rak’aat saying Takbeer (Allahu Akbar).
Do rak’ah #2 in same fashion, but before reading Bismillah and Surah Fatihah, read
the tasbih 15 times. Follow the rest as you did in first Rakat.
9) After second Sajdah of Second Rak’aat sit in Qa'dah Oola (first sitting) read At-
Tahiyyaat, Darood [Salah 'alan Nabi] and Dua' then get up for 3rd rak’aat without
saying Salam.
12
10) Begin third Rakat, just like the first Rakat, with Sana "Subhaana
Kallahumma...” read the above tasbih 15 times. Follow the rest as you did in first
Rakat until you sit for Qa’dah Akhirah (last sitting) after second sajdah of fourth
Rakah. In Qa’dah Akhirah Attahiyat, Darood, Dua’ finish Salah with Salam.

Special notes for Salaat-ul-Tasbih:

1) Do not count loudly. It will break Salah

2) Do not count on fingers or by holding a Bead Tasbih in hand. It is Makruh
[blameworthy].
3) You may count by pressing the fingers as a reminder. For example if you are in
Ruku. You may press pinky of your right hand first for the first count, then the finger
next to it for second count, and then the middle finger for third count, following this
method until you reach the pinky of left hand will give you an exact count of ten. Use
the same method in Qayam, Sajdah and Jalsa.
4) If missed a count then make it up in the next posture. For example if forgot to recite
Tasbih after Surah in Qayam. Then you may recite Tasbih 20 times instead of 10 in
Ruku after "Subhaana Rabbiyal Adheem". Missed Tasbih cannot be recited in Qayam
after ruku and Jalsa between Sajdah. If you missed the Tasbih in Ruku then recite 20
in the first Sajdah instead of the Qayam after ruku'. Similarly if missed the Tasbih in
first Sajdah then do not make it up in Jalsa. Instead recite missed tasbih in the
second Sajdah. If Tasbih has been missed in last sajdah of second or fourth Rakah
then you can recite the missed ones before Attahiyat in Qa’dah.
5) If you miss a wajib in Salah and have to do Sajdah Sahw. You don’t have to recite
Tasbih in Sajdah sahw, since the 300 count has been established. But if you had
missed Tasbih in any of the postures and remember it now. Then you may recite the
missed Tasbih in Sajdah Sahw now.
6) It is preferable to recite after Surah Fatihah, Sura Takaathur in the first raka’, Surah
Wal ‘Asr in the second raka’, Surah Kafiroon (qul ya ayyuhal Kafiroon) in the third
and Surah Ikhlas (Qul Huw Allahu Ahad) in the fourth raka’. If one does not
remember these surahs they can recite the ones they prefer.
