1. Explain the basic steps involved in FEM.


2. Derive the shape functions and strain displacement matrix for a 2-noded I-D line element.
3. Derive the element stiffness matrix for 2-noded beam element..
4. Derive the stiffness matrix for a CST element by direct approach.
5. The nodal displacements of a four node quadrilateral element shown in figure are given as :
Ū = [0.0 0.0 0.02 0.03 0.06 0.015 0.10 0.0]Tcm
Take E = 20 × 106 N/cm2 and γ = 0.25. Determine J, B and at Ej = 0 and n = 0.
Assume plane stress conditions .

6. Explain the cylindrical co-ordinates and Axisymmetric elasticity.


7. Determine the temperature distribution in one dimensional rectangular cross section as shown in figure.
The fin has rectangular cross - section and is 8 cm long, 4 cm wide and 10m thick. Assume that convection
heat loss occurs from the end of the fin, Take K = 3w/cm0 C, h = 0.1w/cm2 0 C and T∞ = 200 c.

8. Write short notes on


(a) Eigen vectors for a stepped beam.
(b) Evaluation of Eigen values.

1. (a) Write the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of FEM.


(b) Explain the strain - displacement relations.
2. Derive the stiffness matrix and the nodal load vectors for a 3-noded I - D line element.
3. Determine the consistent nodal vector due to loads acting on the beam shown in figure.

4. Discuss the finite element modeling of 2 -D stress analysis with CST elements and treatment of boundary conditions.
5. A four node Quadrilateral element is shown in figure. The nodal displacement vector is given as

Find the following


(a) The x and y - co-ordinates of a point P whose location in the element is given by ξ=0.5 and η = 0.5 and
(b) The u, v displacements of the point P.
6. Discuss the formulation of 4-noded iso-parametric element and derive the stiffness matrix for it.
7. Determine the temperature distribution through the composite wall shown in figure when convection heat loss
occurs on the left surface. Assume unit area. Assume wall thickness
t1 = 4cm and t2 = 2cm, K1 = 0.5w/cm0 C,
K2 = 0.05 w/cm0 C, h = 0.1 w/cm2 0 C and T∞ = −50 C.

(a) Evaluation of eigen values in Dynamic analysis.
(b) Eigen vectors for a stepped bar.

1. (a) Write the constitutive relations for plane stress and plane strain conditions.
(b) Write the advantages and dis-advantages of FEM.
2. Discuss the finite element modeling of a one dimensional bar.
3. Analyse the beam shown in figure by Finite. Element Method and determine the end reactions. Also
determine the deflection at mid spans given E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and I = 5 × 106 mm4

4. Explain the finite element modeling of 2-D stress analysis with CST elements.
5. Discuss the formulation of 2-D four noded iso-parametric element.
6. For a long cylinder of inside diameter 8cm and outside diameter 12cm snugly fits in a hole over its
full length as shown in figure. The cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 5 MPa. Using
two element model over a length of 1cm, Evaluate nodal displacements and element stresses. Take
E = 20 × 106 N/cm2 &γ = 0.3.

7. Explain the one dimensional formulation of FIN and derive stiffnen matrix and load vector.
8. Write short notes on:
(a) Formulation of finite element model in dynamic analysis.

1. Explain the stress - strain relations for plane stress, plane strain and axi-symmetric stress conditions.
2. Derive the stiffness matrix and nodal load vectors for a 2- nodal I-D line element.
3. Analyse the beam shown in figure by finite element method and determine the end reactions. Also
determine the deflections at mid span given E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and I = 5 × 106 mm4 .

4. Derive the shape functions and strain displacement matrix for a CST element.

The shape functions are N1 = 21 (ξ − 1) ξ, N2 = − ξ 1 − 1 N3 = 12 (ξ + 1) ξ.
6. Determine the nodal displacements and element stresses of a cylinder fixed at one end as shown in figure.
The internal pressure is 2 Mpa. Take E=210 Gpa and γ=0.3

7. For the two dimensional body shown in figure, determine the temperature distribution. The edges on
the top and bottom of the body are insulated. Assume Kx=Ky. Use three element model.

8. Write short notes on


(a) Formulation of finite element model in dynamic analysis.
(b) Eigen vectors for a stepped bar.
