Traces of Graces
Dear Fellow Parishioners:

Phew! Christmas is over!!! Or is it just beginning? For some of us, Christmas has been coming
since Thanksgiving with Black Friday and other pre holiday sales. Others have been watching their
kid’s ramp up with excitement as schools close for the holidays. Still others find this an extremely
difficult time because of the lack of employment or the loss of a loved one. So is it over or just begin-
ning?

Perhaps both. In order to celebrate an event,

one must get ready and so we have been
given the season of Advent to ponder, won-
der, and be drawn into the immense, loving
act of the Incarnation. Like the birth of any
child, there is a certain epiphany that can
take place, when one realizes the beauty, the
fragility, the mystery of new life. Jesus be-
ing born is just the start of the journey. It is
so much more than a ‘magical’ moment in
time, a past event of long ago. Christmas
begins the march to the hill of salvation.
The Sunday following Christmas is the Feast
of the Epiphany, that awakening of the
deeper meaning of the Lord’s birth symbol-
ized in the gifts of the Magi. Then the
Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism
of the Lord, pointing to the mission of Jesus
to follow the will of the Father. Nice church
language I suppose. But it suggests that we
don’t put away the lights yet or toss the tree
(unless it is a fire hazard!). Let the crèche in
your home linger a bit longer. The Christ-
mas season has just begun!

To all of you who find this parish of St. Edward the Confessor/San Felipe de Jesus Chapel your place
of worship and spiritual home may the Lord grant you epiphanies of grace in this coming year. May
the Lord who has brought you to birth guide and protect you and your family. Thank you to all the
staff, priests, and volunteers who respond to the call of grace in their lives and open the doors for the
rest of us to join in this community.

Together in Christ;

Fr. Steve Sallot

Pastor

Meditando La Palabra
var adelante su imperio.

(Is 9, 5)?

Pbro. Mario A. Juárez

PARISH MEN’S RETREAT

January 28th – 30th 2011
What is a RETREAT? “…A per-
sonal encounter with God through a
balance of communal prayer, inspira-
tional talks, silence and solitude, natu-
ral beauty and sacramental grace.”
Our parish is holding its annual Men’s
Retreat at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center in Sierra
Madre. The Center provides a private room and bath,
(double rooms are available on request), delicious
meals, beautifully landscaped grounds and the guidance
of the Passionist staff. Retreat theme: “Come to the
Well of Living Water: Our Life of Prayer”. We
will discover that prayer is nothing more, nothing less,
than expressing ourselves intimately and honestly with
the One who loves us most.
A non-refundable deposit of $50 is all it takes to
complete your registration. The total requested
donation for the retreat is $180 including the deposit,
but no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.
A deposit can be by check made out to Mater Dolorosa
or by MasterCard or Visa credit card. You can’t afford
not to join us. Pamphlets are in the display case outside
of church.
To register call Conrad Esser on 361-9813, Tom
Phelan on 218-5270 or Greg Wise on 240-1080.
