REPORT ON TOURISM COVERING PASSIVE, ACTIVE AND ADVENTOROUS

ACTIVITIES

INTRODUCTION

There are various aspects of tourism which are developing around the world
and the evolution is ongoing and different concepts pertaining to tourism are
emerging and one of the aspects which are being actively pursued and looked into is
the concept of tourism which would be an extension of the lifestyle of the person.

Task 1a.

Passive Tourism: The passive tourism is a kind of activity where the tourist would
relax and enjoy the natural environment or at times involve in mild sport activities.
For the purpose of the report I would like to take the example of ‘Peninver Sands
Holiday Park’, which is located on the northern part of United Kingdom in Scotland.
Where there are different options for the passive tourist who would like to submerge
himself / herself in the relaxed environments of the beaches or partake in the golfing
activities as the park has an abundance of the same with three golf courses
surrounding the area.

Active Tourism: Active tourism is a responsible travel which involves the physical
and mental participation of the tourist and follows the maxims of sustainability,
protection of Bio-diversity and conservation of culture. The main elements in this kind
of tourism are recreation and education, respect and contemplation, exercise and
active involvement in different activities. The example for this kind of tourism activity
would be the ‘Are’ resort located in Sweden which is the largest ski resort in the
country. This resort offers many facilities for the adventure tourist as it is lined up in
one long line and spreads among three different villages.

Adventurous Tourism: This kind of tourism involves people travelling to remote,

exotic, or at times hostile locations. This kind of tourism is gaining popularity.
Adventure tourism is gaining significance because it makes the tourist to step out of
his / her comfort zones. The example for this kind of activity would be that of water
sports adventures of ‘Perthshire’ which offers multiple adventures like canoeing,
white water rafting, etc.,

Task 1b.

The scope for the above mentioned tourism variants are growing as they are
an extension of the human nature and attract different tourists towards these
activities. The scope of this kind of activities is vast as they can be customised for
example in the case of passive tourism the same would generally be combined with
any major sporting event where the aspect of idle sport watching or at times a
leisurely golf activity or some kind of leisure sport are combined together to enable
that they are appropriately managed to meet the tourist requirements. The present
trend in this kind of activity is growing as the middle aged and old aged tourists
prefer this kind of tours as it would suit their kind of lifestyles.

Likely in the case of active tourism the where it is more and more combined
with the eco tourism and trends are improving to cater for the increased growth in the
sector as more people are willing to go for this kind of tourism activity which involves
a part of ecological tourism.

Finally in the adventurous tourism segment there has been a increasing

activity in terms of the young and student traveller getting involved in this kind of
activities and the same has been observed to grow with the people who are in the
urban areas as they would like to witness this kind of activities which they cannot
experience in their busy life and the concrete jungles of the urban atmosphere.

Task 2

There are various issues which play a key role in this kind of activity and they
are the socio economic factors like the lifestyle of the tourist and the cost of the
planned tour which would have an impact on the way they plan their tours. The same
can be best understood with the utilisation of the PESTEL analysis which stands for
Political, Economical, Sociological, Technological, Environmental and finally Legal
aspects which would require to be addressed for gaining an understanding of the
overall impact of the external macro factors which affect this kind of tourism
activities.

From this aspect if we analyse the above mentioned tours from the point of
view of age the travellers who would generally opt for the passive tourism would be
the middle aged people and the retired personnel, and at the same time it needs to
be seen that the active tours would be undertaken more in nature by the middle aged
as well as young tourists. Finally with regards to the aspect of adventurous tours this
would generally be undertaken by the single and student group of tourists.

The gender division if seen is relatively evenly spread and the above tours
can be undertaken by either genders. However, the adventurous tours are more
prone to be undertaken by the male gender instead of the female gender due to the
reason that it would involve the case of travelling to hazardous areas at times.

Culture has an implication on the types of tours being undertaken by different

people and if the same has to be related to the above types of tours for example the
passive tourist may not have much of an interaction with the culture or the local
traditions as the passive tourist would be more inclined towards having a relaxed
environment and would not involve in the local culture where he / she visits. On the
other hand the active and adventurous tourists would be required to involve more
and more with the local environments to undertake the kind of tourism activities
which would require the involvement of local friends who would be developed
through local sources. The same is applicable for the adventure tourist who would
require support from the local environment and hence culture plays an important role
in this kind of tourist activities.

Fashion plays an important element in the overall scheme of things as far as

passive tourism is concerned as it involves the element of watching different new
things and fashion is one of the element which would be part of the same kind of
activity. However, it may not be able to attract the different other tourists like the
active or the adventure tourists in this case.

Education as an element has great influence in the way people plan their
travels across different regions in the world for tourism purposes. These tourists
include the adventurer and explorer who prefer outdoor activities, the seeker who
might be attracted to the peaceful and tranquil setting, and the educational tourists
who might be attracted to the culture, traditions and history of the place (Yusof, et al,
2009)

TASK – 3a

Tourism consumption patterns and the growth of ‘‘special interest tourism’’

(SIT) are thought to reflect the continuously increasing diversity of leisure interests of
the late-modern leisure society (Douglas, Douglas, & Derret, 2001). The special
interest tourism is considered to be of relevance from the fact that initially it started
off as an element which was planned for “hard or specialised” end of the market.
However, over a period of time the same has caught the imagination of the various
other segments who have brought in even the soft and novice end of the spectrum
into the main stream element of the tourism activities and been able to generate the
overall impetus to cover the broad range of tourists who are being offered
customised special interest tourism packages to suit individual needs.

TASK – 3b

The range of services offered by different destinations which were discussed

above include the serene golf courses in the peninver sands resort which are
suitable for the tourist involved in the passive tourism end of the spectrum. The
active tourist would be able to indulge in the various ski options being offered by the
‘Are’ tourism resort located in ‘Sweden’ and it offers various activities for skiers
starting off with basic course to the high end difficult terrains which are of high
relevance for the tourists who are active and generally undertake this kind of tourism.
Finally, the adventurous tourist would be highly effective in the ‘Perthshire’ resorts
where he / she can enjoy the various different water sports being offered in the
extreme situations faced by the tourists which are of high impact for the adventurous
tourists.

Conclusion

The above three resorts which are discussed offer varied elements of
activities which would attract different kinds of tourists as the same are increasingly
attaining prominence due to the fact that segmented tourist attraction is the new
phenomenon as it ensures that the tourists would be able to pick and choose the
right location as per the lifestyle and the way of life that they exhibit.
