SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

A Sports Development Plan is a document, which looks at the future

development of sports clubs step by step. It enables the club to look at:
1 - Where it is now?
2 – Where it would like to be?
3 – How it will get there?

Sports Development Plans are crucial to attract funding and essential in

developing, improving, growing, changing direction and setting new goals for
your club.

WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

Gather information to build a detailed picture of your organisation as it is
today. If your planning is to be successful, you need a clear starting point
based on factual information and providing firm foundations on which to build.
Probably the best way to answer this question is to imagine you are carrying
out a very thorough audit of your organisation.

Membership

How many members do you have?

How many boys/men/girls/women?
Their ages?
Where do they come from?
What are their levels of ability?
How much do they pay?
Did membership increase, decrease or remain the same last year?
If decreased, why?
How do you attract new members?

Activities

What do you offer members?

What is the main purpose of your organisation?
How many training sessions do you run each week?
Do you offer only sporting activities, or do people have the opportunity to
socialise?
Do you have links with schools/other clubs?
How do your activities dovetail with other community sports?

Coaches/Officials

How many coaches/officials do you have?

Are they fully qualified?
What coach education courses have they attended this year?
Are they child protection trained?

Buildings/Equipment
Do you own your own building/lease a building/rent a room? Where?
Is it accessible to ALL?
What equipment do you own? What condition?
Do you have an assets register?
Do you have a sinking fund for maintenance and replacement of equipment?

Committee

How many members do you have?

Who does what?
Do you have a constitution?
Do you have aims and objectives?
Do you have an equal opportunities policy?
Do you have sub-groups?

SWOT Analysis

Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE?

What would you like to see in place at your club in three or four years’ time?
Agree a vision of the future and a time-scale within which to work.
Look at the last section. Do you need more, better or different of anything?
Break the vision down into bite-sized objectives and prioritise them.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET THERE?

List the main tasks and identify the resources you need to achieve each goal.

Create an action plan and allocate responsibility for each task to individuals or
working groups.

Stick to the plan and use it to monitor progress as you carry out each task and
bring the vision to life.

Examples of sports development/action plans can be seen on the next

few pages. These plans are real and active plans produced by various
Barrow sports clubs.
