 W hether you’re a federal manager responsible for the training and development of
employees within your agency or an individual seeking continuing education to earn
a credential or increase your professional effectiveness, distance education from the Graduate
School provides solutions to help you reach your learning objectives.
The use of distance education to overcome the challenges of time and place for continued
training and education is well established. But at the Graduate School, we understand that
the challenges of time and place are not the same for every person in every instance. That’s
why we maintain six separate delivery modes for our distance learners. From high-tech GS
Connect, featuring an option for live courses streamed over the Web and real-time instructor/
classmate interaction, to the more traditional GS Classic, which can deliver text-based course
content in a preprinted format, eliminating the need for an Internet connection,
we have a delivery mechanism to match your needs.
By employing the distance education options available from the Graduate School, training
managers, as well as individuals at all levels of government, the military and the private sector,
are finding ways to acquire the quality education and training they need while reducing both
costs and overall impact on personal and organizational schedules. We’re ready to help you do

Get a high-quality classroom experience without leaving your workplace or home. GS Connect courses are classes that use
interactive multimedia (audio and video) streamed over the Web to deliver an engaging learning experience. They provide the
ability to interact with an instructor, collaborate with classmates, participate in activities and access past sessions at the student’s
discretion throughout the course, all online. There are three GS Connect formats designed to meet your specific education and
training needs: Live, Independent and Premium.
GS Connect Live
This delivery format mirrors the classroom experience by offering real-time instruction and access to the instructor and class-
mates either verbally or through online chat. Classes are scheduled to take place at set times; however, they are also archived
and can be viewed at anytime during the course. These online classes offer the same kind of quality interaction as our classroom-
based courses.
GS Connect Independent
This course delivery offers the convenience of online education with the flexibility to fit the participant’s schedule. Students
view professionally produced video of class sessions, delivered by the same skilled instructors who teach in our classrooms.
Because these sessions are pre-recorded, the participant can access them at anytime, as many times as needed during the course.
Content is also broken into modules that can be reviewed in any order, and each course is supported by an instructor who will
answer student e-mails and facilitate related discussion forums.
GS Connect Premium
Premium services are primarily used by training managers seeking custom courses for employees within their organization. The
GS Connect Design and Production Team will quickly shape your subject matter into state-of-the-art online courses ready for
deployment to the agency workforce. What’s more, we can send our production crews to your location(s) and produce/broad-
cast live sessions via the Internet for remote employees. If training space is not available at your facility, we can produce your
sessions in our studio.

GS Classic provides distance training and education using traditional delivery mechanisms that have been proven effective for
students of the Graduate School over the past 70 years. These text-based courses are a convenient and flexible way to meet your
education and training needs — enabling you to learn at your own pace, on your own schedule, where it is most convenient
for you. Most provide instructor interaction while others use an independent learning format. Three learning formats are
available: Printed, CD-ROM and Online.
GS Classic Printed
If your lifestyle is active; if your agency limits Internet access or usage; if your chosen profession demands that you be able to
travel, or perhaps even relocate, at a moment’s notice, GS Classic Printed is an excellent delivery option. These courses consist
of workbooks and textbooks containing all necessary course content. And, since everything is supplied in a preprinted format,
the times and places you set for learning are nearly limitless, providing the ultimate in educational flexibility and portability.
GS Classic CD-ROM
Like our GS Classic Printed courses, GS Classic CD-ROM courses are also text-based; however, the content is supplied on
CD-ROM rather than in preprinted form. A computer is needed to access this information but an Internet connection is not,
meaning you acquire virtually the same flexibility for the time and place you study.
GS Classic Online
Our GS Classic Online courses are text-based, delivered through a Web interface. However, unlike our GS Connect courses,
they do not typically feature streaming audio and video. Text-based content is supplied through electronic files downloaded
from the course Web site or through textbooks or through a combination of both.
