tumors
A chemical naturally occurring in broccoli may actually block the development of tumors
in people with a certain genetic trait, according to a study conducted by researchers from
the Institute of Food at Norwich in the United Kingdom.
Scientists have long known that a diet high in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables
contributes to a lower risk of cancer. In recent years, research has increasingly focused on
one particular component of these vegetables, called sulforaphane.
In the current study, researchers found that some human and mouse prostate cells were
less likely to turn cancerous when exposed to the chemical. The effect was only seen,
however, in cell lines deficient in a gene known as PTEN.
PTEN produces a protein that suppresses tumors by regulating cell growth and natural
cell death. The gene also plays a role in cell movement and genetic regulation within
cells. Previous research has linked a weakened or absent PTEN gene to a faster spread of
prostate cancer.
"PTEN is a tumor suppressor gene, the deletion or inactivation of which can initiate
prostate cancer development and enhance the probability of its progression," Mithen said.
"We've shown that sulforaphane has different effects depending on whether the PTEN
gene is present."
Eating broccoli is only one part of a healthy, cancer-fighting lifestyle, said Kate Holmes
of The Prostate Cancer Charity.
"Moving away from a diet rich in meat and saturated fat will improve overall health and
reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, as well as possibly helping to
prevent prostate cancer," she said. "A diet rich in fruit and vegetables combined with a
physically active lifestyle gives you the best chance of protecting your long-term health."
Watermelons lower blood pressure as
good as statins and provide many other
benefits
Elevated blood pressure (hypertension) is common for many of us from time to time and
it has often been the practice of doctors to treat high blood pressure by prescribing
dangerous statin drugs. Now, researchers have found that healthy watermelons can do
just as good of a job without all the nasty side effects which have been linked to statin
drugs.
"We are the first to document improved aortic hemodynamics in pre-hypertensive but
otherwise healthy middle-aged men and women receiving therapeutic doses of
watermelon," said Dr. Arturo Figueroa, lead researcher of the new study. "These findings
suggest that this 'functional food' has a vasodilatory effect, and one that may prevent
prehypertension from progressing to full-blown hypertension, a major risk factor for heart
attacks and strokes," added Figueroa
The large watermelon fruit is the richest edible source of the amino acid L-citrulline,
which regulates healthy blood pressure. L-citrulline is converted to another amino acid,
L-arginine, once in the body. However, taking L-arginine as a dietary supplement can
cause nausea, gastrointestinal problems and diarrhea, especially among adults who
already suffer from raised blood pressure.
"Individuals with increased blood pressure and arterial stiffness - especially those who
are older and those with chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes - would benefit from L-
citrulline in either the synthetic or natural (watermelon) form," Figueroa said.
Helping lower and control blood pressure is just one of many health benefits for the large
summertime favorite. Watermelons have the highest water content of any fruit and, in
addition to being a supreme thirst quencher, are excellent sources of several vitamins:
vitamin A, an antioxidant which helps maintain eye health; vitamin C, which strengthens
immunity, heals wounds, prevents cell damage, and promotes healthy teeth and gums;
and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.
Tomatoes have been highly advertised as a great source for lycopene, a powerful
antioxidant that helps fight heart disease and several types of cancer, especially prostate
cancer. Watermelon, however, has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh
fruit or vegetable.
Watermelons also have plenty of thiamine, magnesium, and potassium which are all vital
for optimal health. Thus if your children, or perhaps yourself, are reluctant to dig into
spinach, other dark green leafy vegetables or lima beans on a regular basis, servings of
watermelon would be a very healthy substitute - and would make a healthy addition at
any rate.
Watermelons help muscle and nerve function and help maintain the body's proper
electrolyte and acid-base balance. They also reduce the risk of colon cancer, asthma,
heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Watermelons are also excellent for kidney health
as it can both flush the kidneys and dissolve kidney stones. One of the most popular and
effective natural remedies for kidney stones is a tea made from watermelon seeds, though
often the juice alone in plentiful quantities will do the trick.
A good one way to cleanse both the colon and the kidneys is to go an entire day
consuming nothing but watermelon. Besides flushing the kidneys it will also usually
clean out the colon as well - so well, in fact, that a good piece of advice is to not stray too
far from available toilet facilities from about mid-afternoon on when doing a watermelon
flush.
Women treated for cancer with radiation
suffer a higher risk of future stillbirths
Women who were treated for cancer with radiation as children are significantly more
likely to suffer from stillbirth or have an infant die shortly after birth, according to a
study conducted by researchers from Vanderbilt University.
No correlation was found between stillbirth and neonatal death in men or in women
treated with chemotherapy alone, but radiation to the pelvis increased women's risk by 13
percent.
The effect may occur because radiation restricts blood flow to the uterus, hampering fetal
growth. Another cause may be radiation-induced DNA damage to a girl's eggs,
eventually producing a defective fetus. The researchers believe that men appeared
unaffected because they continue to produce new sperm throughout their lives.
"If you were a young girl treated with radiotherapy into your pelvis and you want to
become pregnant, you can, but make sure to tell your doctor and be aware it might be a
difficult pregnancy," lead author John Boice said.
The study is only the latest showing long-term health consequences for cancer treatment
in childhood. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found
that even 25 years later, childhood cancer survivors are more likely than their peers to die
from heart attacks, strokes or another cancer.
"Most conventional cancer therapies damage at least as much healthy tissue as cancer
tissue, " writes Phyllis A. Balch in Prescription for Herbal Healing.
"Radiation therapy can cause adverse, even lethal, side effects," she notes. "[S]troke rates
increase by five times in people who have undergone radiation therapy for head and neck
cancer. ... Even though radiation therapy may cure cancer, nonrelated cancer deaths seem
to be a long-term side effect to radiation."
Fish oil lowers risk of breast cancer by 32
percent
Regularly taking a fish oil supplement may lower the risk of breast cancer by 32 percent,
researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle have found.
"This study is one of the largest studies that have come out showing that there may be a
role for fish oil in the prevention of cancer, specifically breast cancer," said Lorenzo
Cohen, of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas-Houston.
The researchers followed 35,016 post-menopausal women between the ages of 50 and 76
who were taking part in the 10-year Vitamins and Lifestyle (VITAL) study, an
investigation into the effects of non-vitamin supplements on male and female cancer risk.
All participants were residents of Washington state and had no history of breast cancer.
After an average of six years, the researchers found that women who regularly took a fish
oil supplement were 32 percent less likely to develop invasive ductal breast cancer than
women who did not take the supplements. No information was available on what doses of
fish oil the study participants were taking.
Invasive ductal breast cancer, in which tumors form in the breast's milk ducts, is the most
common form of the disease. In contrast, lobular breast tumors form in the organ's milk
glands.
The researchers also looked for a breast cancer-preventive effect of the menopause-
relieving supplements black cohosh, dong quai, soy, and St. John's wort, but found none.
Scientists remain unsure what role fish oil might play in reducing cancer risk. Since some
research has implicated inflammation in cancer risk, the anti-inflammatory properties of
fish oil may explain part of the effect.
"Fish oil, in general, is a very good anti-inflammatory agent, and inflammation plays a
role in cancer development," fish oil researcher Peiying Yang of M.D. Anderson said.
Fish oil's high content of omega-3 fatty acids may also play a role. Although previous
studies have found no connection between consumption of fatty fish and lowered cancer
risk, fish oil supplements typically contain a higher omega-3 concentration than fish
itself.
A growing body of research suggests that the typical Western diet is far too low in these
essential oils, which can be found in fatty fish (such as salmon and sardines), canola oil,
soybeans and flaxseeds. However, because the oils may cause an increased risk of
bleeding if combined with certain medications including over-the-counter NSAIDs, they
should be used only in consultation with a health professional.
For those wishing to take fish oil supplements, the wide variety of options can be
overwhelming. In addition, these products are not regulated by the FDA.
"Some products may be contaminated with heavy metals," Cohen said. "If you are not
going to get fish oil from the fish itself, do appropriate homework to make sure you
choose a reputable product."
Good Morning America recommends that consumers look for oils that are of high purity
and are certified by U.S. Pharmacopeia, the official NGO that sets standards for
healthcare products sold in the United States. Many over-the-counter brands meet these
standards just as well as name brands, at a significantly lower price.
A physician or other health practitioner may also be able to help consumers select a
reputable product.
Super nutrient shown to stop cancer in its
tracks
The second leading cause of death in the US is a preventable disease caused by a
damaging diet of processed foods and poor lifestyle choices. Having seen family
members and friends succumb to the disease, many people view cancer as inevitable
and believe there is little they can do to protect themselves from the `Big C`. Our
body is continually under assault from rogue cancer cells that are detected and
controlled by our innate immune system. Eventually a diet of sugary processed foods
and regular contact with household toxins wear down our natural defenses allowing
cancer to proliferate. Vitamin K is a critical nutrient that has been shown effective in
preventing a number of cancer cell lines with no toxic side effects.
Vitamin K1 is the most common form of the vitamin found in fresh vegetables and
leafy greens and must be converted to K2 in the intestines to be available for use by
our cells. K2 is only found in naturally produced cheeses and natto. Since most diets
are deficient in vegetables, very little is available for conversion to the active type
shown effective in cancer prevention.
Eating plenty of raw vegetables and greens will ensure you have plenty of vitamin
K1 that`s needed to form clots. K1 can be converted to K2 by bacteria in the
digestive tract, although this process is inefficient and doesn`t reliably increase blood
saturation. Pre-formed K2 is found naturally in only a handful of foods such as
cheese curd and fermented natto. Many people find these foods difficult to tolerate
and need to take an inexpensive supplement with food to attain optimal health
benefits.
Back in July, a study published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment
found that women with the highest intake of acrylamide were 31 percent more likely to
develop ER+ breast cancer, 47 percent more likely to develop PR+ breast cancer, and 43
percent more likely to develop ER+PR+ breast cancer, compared to women who
consumed the least or no acrylamide.
In 2009, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that
acrylamide intake caused an increase in oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
cholesterol levels, increased inflammation markers in antioxidants, which would
otherwise remove acrylamide, and other neurological damage
(http://www.naturalnews.com/025774_a...).
And in 2008, a study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology found that women
who eat roughly one serving of potato chips a day are twice as likely as those who do not
to develop ovarian or endometrial cancers.
Fried potatoes are not the only foods that contain acrylamide, though. Any starchy foods
that are cooked too long or at too high a temperature can form acrylamide, including even
grilled meats and vegetables with grill marks on them. Toasted breads and cereals, baked
foods, browned meats, and even some dried fruits also contain acrylamide
(http://www.naturalnews.com/024942_a...).
"Consumers can reduce their exposure to acrylamide by limiting their intake of potato
chips and French fries...and quitting smoking, which is a major source of acrylamide,"
said Mary Ann Johnson, PhD, a spokesperson at the American Society for Nutrition.
Pancreatic cancer takes 20 years to grow
into detectable tumors - here's how to
halt it today
New research published in the journal Nature reveals that pancreatic cancer takes 20
years to grow to the point where it is diagnosed by conventional medical doctors. This
was determined by sequencing the DNA of cancer tumor cells from deceased patients.
Because cancer mutations occur in growing tumors at a known rate, scientists were able
to map the timing of the development of full-blown pancreatic cancer tumors.
Here's what the scientists at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the
Howard Hughes Medical Institute found (and here's why this matters in a huge way to
people interested in healthy living):
• It takes 11.7 years for one mutation in a pancreas cell to grow into a "mature" pancreatic
tumor (which might show up on a medical scan).
• It takes another 6.8 years for the pancreatic tumor to spread and cause tumors to appear
in other organs of the body.
In all, it takes about 20 years for a person to grow a cancer tumor and see it spread to
the point where their doctor will diagnose them with pancreatic cancer.
In other words, by the time doctors diagnose you with cancer, you've already been
growing it for two decades.
Reason #1) The idea thrown around by cancer doctors that cancer is a "spontaneous
disease" that strikes randomly and without warning is pure bunk. In order to "get" cancer,
you actually have to GROW cancer for two decades! It doesn't just suddenly appear like
magic.
Reason #2) When cancer doctors diagnose you with pancreatic cancer and say things
like, "Good thing we caught it early!" they are full of bunk yet again. They didn't catch it
early -- they caught it late! Almost 20 years too late.
Reason #3) If it takes 20 years to grow cancer tumors to the point where you get
diagnosed with aggressive pancreatic cancer, then that means you have 20 years to
change your lifestyle and stop the cancer!
That's the most important point of all, of course. In order to grow cancer tumors for 20
years, you have to feed the cancer for 20 years while keeping it alive. And how do you do
that?
Next, you have to be vitamin D deficient for the entire 20 years. That's because vitamin
D halts 77 percent of all cancers (including pancreatic cancer), and when combined with
other nutrients like selenium, you can halt even more cancers.
If you combine vitamin D and selenium nutrition with other anti-cancer nutrients such as
fresh vegetable juice (on a daily basis), omega-3 fatty acids, a wide variety of fresh fruits
(including citrus and berries), and even red wine (rich with resveratrol), you will create
an internal biological environment in which cancer tumors just can't grow at all.
This is especially true if you pursue a more alkaline diet that's rich in vegetables and
green foods rather than acidic substances such as sugar, fried foods and caffeine.
Combine all this with some regular exercise, good sleep, stress reduction habits and strict
avoidance of cancer-causing chemicals, and you've got a recipe for blocking virtually all
tumor growth in your body.
So even if you have a wayward pancreatic cell that decides to mutate and try to become
cancerous on its own, that cell will not have any long-term success in replicating inside
your body because it's surrounded by healthy cells and bathed in anti-cancer nutrients
carried to it each day in your blood!
Remember, your cells rely entirely on nutrients delivered by your blood, and if your
blood is delivering anti-cancer nutrients each day, then "bad" cells will never be allowed
to replicate and become cancer tumors.
Obviously, the composition of your blood is determined by what you eat. If you eat junk
food, your blood will be junk blood, and it will deliver junk to your cells (cancer cells
love junk!). If you eat healthy foods, you will have healthy blood, and cancer tumors will
shrivel up and actually lose their blood supply then die. (Antiangiogenesis.)
This is what this new research actually reveals: That pancreatic cancer takes two
decades to develop inside your body, which naturally means you have two decades to
change your health habits and stop growing cancer tumors in your body.
So you might be on year 10 of the 20-year cancer diagnosis plan. There's no way to know
because cancer tumors don't show up diagnostic tests when they're only 10 years old
(usually). But if you've been following a cancer-promoting lifestyle, you can rest assured
you have micro tumors in your body that are just waiting for more sugar and less vitamin
D in your blood in order to divide and grow even more.
So why not stop growing cancer tumors today? Start juicing! If you want to stop
cancer in its tracks, buy yourself a high-end countertop juicing machine, go out and buy
some organic produce on a regular basis, and start juicing away your cancer. (No
kidding!)
Start consuming anti-cancer nutrients on a daily basis. Even a small amount of fresh kale,
cabbage or broccoli juice (just one ounce) taken every day will have a powerful anti-
cancer effect and may halt tumor growth in your body.
But just to be sure, blend and drink fresh citrus fruits, organic berries, and microalgae
supplements on a regular basis. Read NaturalNews and learn about the latest breaking
news on anti-cancer foods and supplements. Changing what you eat will dramatically
alter what your body grows inside. Instead of growing cancer tumors, you can start
growing healthy cells that will quickly overpower any diseased cells.
The bottom line to all this is the GREAT NEWS that you don't have to grow cancer
tumors anymore! You can simply decide to stop growing cancer by changing the
biochemical environment in which your cells live. Change the environment and you
change the results. It's a simple matter of cause and effect.
That means you've got 20 years to make a change in your life. Why not start right now?
(If you haven't already...)
Fact: Pancreatic survival rates have not changed in the last 40 years. Do you know
why? Because conventional medical doctors wait until you've been growing cancer
for 20 years to tell you that you have cancer. (Seriously. And they think they're
running the most "advanced" medical system in the world.)
Wouldn't it make more sense to teach patients how to prevent cancer two decades earlier
and thereby avoid growing it in the first place?
Carrots and cruciferous vegetables
prevent breast cancer
It is safe to assume that most people are aware of breast cancer's existence, but many lack
practical knowledge about how to go about preventing it through nutrition. However, a
new study out of Boston University adds to the growing body of literature about the anti-
cancer properties of vegetables, particularly cruciferous ones like carrots, collard greens,
cabbage and broccoli.
As part of the ongoing Black Women's Health Study, the recent research was particularly
focused on foods that help lower the risk of estrogen receptor-negative (ER-negative)
breast cancer, a type of breast cancer common among African-American women. But
what they found was that many vegetables fight all forms of breast cancer, and even
cancer in general.
The team tracked more than 50,000 African-American women for 12 years. Roughly
1,300 of these women developed breast cancer during that time, and 35 percent of those
cancers were the ER-negative type. But those that ate at least two servings of vegetables a
day were 43 percent less likely to develop ER-negative breast cancer than women who
ate less than four servings of vegetables per week.
Additionally, women who ate three or more servings of just carrots a week were 17
percent less likely to develop breast cancer than women who ate carrots less that once a
month. And cruciferous vegetables in general exhibited anti-cancer effects for all forms
of cancer.
There are many practical ways by which women can help avoid getting breast cancer.
Instead of celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, NaturalNews would rather turn it
into Breast Cancer Prevention Month by informing readers about the foods and herbs
they can eat right now to stay healthy and avoid the disease.
Swimming pool chemicals linked to
cancer, lung disease
Frequent use of swimming pools, especially indoor ones, can lead to long-term health
problems, say three new studies published in the journal Environmental Health
Perspectives. According to the reports, chemical disinfection by products, that form in
pools -- and in the air surrounding them -- can potentially cause both lung damage,
asthma and cancer.
In the first study, samples of blood, urine and exhaled air from otherwise healthy
individuals who swam in an indoor pool for 40 minutes revealed a significant increase in
bio-markers of toxicity. Such toxicity occurs as a result of chlorine and other pool
chemicals reacting with organic matter that is either introduced into the water through
sweat and skin, or that is present in the water naturally.
The second study found that a 40-minute swim in the pool can also cause short-term cell
damage in the lungs. Perpetual cell damage from prolonged exposure can lead to serious
respiratory illness.
The third study revealed that both chlorinated and brominated pools are loaded with
dangerous disinfection byproducts. Samples of water from both sources revealed more
than 100 toxic byproducts, many of which have never been identified in either swimming
pool or drinking water.
Until then, concerned individuals can choose to swim in ultra-violet (UV) disinfected
pools and spas. The UV treatment kills dangerous pathogens and pollutants without
creating toxic byproducts. Minimal, if any, chemicals are required to keep UV-treated
pools optimally purified.
optimal dimurnikan.
