From January 26th to February 6th, 2011, WHITE WAVE will be hosting and producing the COOL NEW YORK
2011 DANCE FESTIVAL (CNYDF), celebrating the 8th consecutive year of the company’s annual winter dance
showcase. About 60 contemporary companies/choreographers will be presented in 19 performances during
this two-week long extravaganza of cutting-edge dancemaking. All performances will take place at WHITE WAVE
John Ryan Theater, located at 25 Jay Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn. Kicking off the celebration is WHITE WAVE’s
Opening Night Benefit which costs $30; all other performances will be presented to the public FREE OF CHARGE.

The COOL NEW YORK DANCE FESTIVAL originated in 2004 as a component of Cool New York, the City’s winter
celebration of “arts and parks” events. Our Festival features both young luminaries and well-known ensembles,
bringing a wide spectrum of talents from all across the United States and beyond into the New York City spotlight.
WHITE WAVE’s regular programs include a variety of educational programs for children, who are incorporated into
special “A Day for the Family” matinees (1/29 & 2/5). WHITE WAVE’s family audiences enjoy the art of movement
together, instilling the love of dance in both young and old.

WHITE WAVE: MISSION & RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Each year, WHITE WAVE presents three annual dance festivals in conjunction with larger arts and civic programs. We
create unmatched performance opportunities for young choreographers and eminent artists alike, and provide the
New York community with continued access to diverse artistic voices throughout the year. Roslyn Sulcas of the New
York Times summed up the importance of our contemporary dance showcases in her review of our WAVE RISING
SERIES, stating that WHITE WAVE presents a “showcase (of) a broad variety of work. Tickets are cheap and dancing
plentiful; it’s a good mix.”

WHITE WAVE’s Festivals were created in response to the needs of emerging artists; they present original and cutting-
edge dance works at no or a very low cost to participating dance-makers. WHITE WAVE relieves choreographers
from the high costs of self-production, promotion, and space rental in the competitive NYC market. The diverse
audiences attending these artists’ performances include new legions of fans for contemporary dance who take
advantage of our free admission policy.

WHITE WAVE’s 2010/11 Season has already had a brilliant start. Our annual WAVE RISING SERIES offers rising
choreographers rare opportunities to present their work on a large scale – often for the first time – in New York City,
the dance capital of the globe. We presented 19 spectacular companies in the 5 th iteration of the SERIES (October
20th – November 7th, 2010); curator Young Soon Kim assembled a diverse group of talented, rising national and
international dancemakers, including troupes hailing from Korea and Italy.

WHITE WAVE’s annual DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, showcasing a “who’s who” in contemporary and avant-garde
modern dance, has become a distinguished New York-based meeting ground for dancemakers and dance lovers
alike.

Our 10th Anniversary DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL (September 23rd – 26th, 2010) was a truly spectacular
commemoration of WHITE WAVE’s first decade as a performing arts presenter!

As usual, we had standing-room-only crowds at our John Ryan Theater for our main stage presentations. Our
celebration also reached all across the DUMBO waterfront: it was a delight to see people enjoying multiple programs
of site-specific works at Pier 1 Park, and a large audience assembled for our family-friendly dance program in
Brooklyn Bridge Park. Finally, our spectacular Grand Finale at Fulton Ferry Landing, concluding both our Festival
and the larger DUMBO Arts Festival, presented dazzling dance with a sparkling New York skyline as a backdrop!

The 10th Anniversary DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL opened with an enthusiastic full house at our Gala evening of
performance and celebration, which honored two of WHITE WAVE’s most distinguished supporters: Jay Beckner
(President of the Mertz Gilmore Foundation) and Mark Crosby (Attorney).

One special highlight of WHITE WAVE’s wide press coverage was the feature on our 2010 WAVE RISING SERIES
broadcast on Channel 13 Sunday Arts, which stated that WHITE WAVE had brought together “innovative
dancemakers from around the world.” This year, Quinn Batson of offoffoff.com enthusiastically praised WHITE
WAVE’s production expertise: “Presenting 15 hour-long shows over 3 days, with 6 to 10 groups in each show, is a
logistical accomplishment. Young Soon Kim has gotten better at it in each of the 10 years of her DUMBO DANCE
FESTIVAL.” Backstage’s Lisa Jo Sagolla recently noted that “The New York City downtown dance world owes a
great debt to Young Soon Kim… [Her] events are the best dance deals in town.”

other programs and events happening at WHITE WAVE’s Performance & Rehearsal Space.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; Mertz
Gilmore Foundation; New York Community Trust; Korean Cultural Service, NY; the Ministry of Culture, Sports and
Tourism Republic of Korea and is made possible with public funds from the NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS,
celebrating 50 years of building strong, creative communities in New York State's 62 counties. We also express gratitude
to our principal philanthropic supporter, the John Ryan Company.
