Head nurse

duties

• coordinates and supervises all functions relating to the nursing care, nursing
documentation, laboratory functions and performance measures of Primary Care
patients.
• Perform administrative and clinical responsibility for the nursing service
provided to Primary Care patients in the FP/LCBOC.
• The Head Nurse is directly accountable to the organizational designated
Associated Chief of Nursing Service.
• Coordinates and supervises all functions relating to the nursing care, nursing
documentation, laboratory functions and performance measures of Primary Care
patients, i.e., supplies, equipment, instruments, assignments, interprets and
enforces tracking and trending of data, CPRS, templates and clinical reminders.
• Accountable to the VA's Primary Care program initiatives, goal setting, policy
development and customer satisfaction. Confers with Primary Care Team in
planning daily schedule.
• Develops effective work methods and work schedules for planned clinic
operations.
• Develops/Supervises staff development and competencies for assigned and
contract nursing staff.
• Organizes assigned nursing supervisory and administrative responsibility using
an interdisciplinary CBOC team approach.
• Evaluates the work performance and attributes of nursing personnel timely and
prepares evaluations or reports and meets all deadlines.
• Instructs and orients new staff members and continuously interprets and instructs
personnel for higher standards.
• Maintains a dignified professional association with personnel and the public.
• Responsible for timely administrative reports, memos and utilizing various types
of electronic information systems used by the VA.
• Committed to nursing excellence and possesses strong interpersonal team
building and decision making skills.
• Trains nursing staff in ongoing new job responsibilities,
• Performance Measures, documentation requirements and mandatory training.
Works all areas of the FP/LCBOC performing all duties varying throughout the
day to meet the needs of the veterans and staffing.
• Individual functioning within this role can expect to perform tasks that exposes
the individual to blood, body fluids, and/or body tissues.
• Performs processes to prepare reusable medical equipment (RME) per VAMC
Alexandria SOPs specific to each device according to the manufactures'
recommendations as required.
• Complies with all Infection control practices. Completes all nursing & hospital
requirements/training within the required timeframe.
