Smith Computers is a startup nationwide computer retailing company.

VICE PRESIDENT - MANUFACTURING AND ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS Position reports to


the CEO. Primary responsibilities include: (1) setting up all manufacturing operations, and (2)
implementing a high technology, internet-based order processing system at the retail outlets.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Set up all manufacturing and logistics operations, based on “build-to-order” systems;


 Implemented Lean Manufacturing concepts, minimizing both raw materials and
finished goods in the entire supply chain and retail stores;
 Selected/established central manufacturing facility in Memphis, TN to take advantage
of nationwide distribution facilities and direct access to the Far East;
 Established long-term agreements with Far East suppliers, international carriers and
third-party logistics providers to implement JIT delivery of raw materials and finished
goods;
 Implemented internet-based software downloading and CDROM creation in the retail
stores to enhance customer selection and minimize software inventory;
 Implemented direct order processing between retail stores and supply base to reduce
cycle time in assembling custom computer systems.

Acme Corporation is a 24/7 high volume manufacturer of personal computer modems.

DIRECTOR OF TECHNICAL OPERATIONS – PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION


Position reported to the Vice President of Manufacturing, with primary
responsibilities for managing: (1) the daily activities of 120 engineers,
technicians and programmers within four departments, and (2) an operating
budget of $10M and a $65M capital budget.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Successfully manufactured 40,000 modems a day;


 Doubled installed capacity from 9 to 18 Surface Mount Technology assembly lines,
without any production downtime, via design/implementation of a new plant layout;
 Improved first pass test yields from 82% to 98% by implementing Design For
Manufacturability (DFM) and Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques on all SMT
lines;
 Reduced labor content by 16% by automating manually inserted components, in-circuit
and functional testing, and packaging;
 Won ISO Best Practice awards from Lloyd’s of London for automated preventative
maintenance and operator training programs.

Reporting to the General Manager, the primary responsibilities of the position were to direct
the activities of the Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial and Software Engineering departments.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Transferred manufacturing operations to a more modern, larger facility with no loss of


production time;
 Designed/implemented a real-time, network-based barcode system to track “work-in-
progress” (WIP) and “change orders” associated with high volume manufacturing of
multi-branded, multi-configured computer systems;
 Implemented an intelligent burn-in procedure that allowed failed components to be
replaced without disassembling the computer;
 Selected, justified and installed a state-of-the-art board testing system.
SR. MANUFACTURING ENGR. MGR. – MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY CTR. (1985 – 1986)
Position reported to the Vice President of Manufacturing. Primary responsibilities included:
(1) the creation of a technology center to improve the reliability of computer products, and (2)
the implementation of new computer manufacturing techniques via automation and robotics.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Created a state-of-the-art laboratory to perform shock, vibration, humidity,


temperature and life testing;
 Improved computer products packaging for better reliability;
 Installed the first Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly line;
 Researched the use of automation and robotics by visiting manufacturing sites in
both the U.S. and Japan;
 Installed the company’s first fully automated packaging machine and
implemented other semi-automated computer assembly operations.

Mechanical, Industrial and Software Engineering departments as they related to the
manufacturing of proprietary personal computers.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Solved operational problems at the company’s overseas distribution facilities in Belgium


and England.
SR. MANUFACTURING ENGR. MGR. – APPARATUS DIVISION (1982 – 1984) Position reported
to the General Manager. Duties included the management of the Electrical, Mechanical,
Industrial and Software Engineering departments as they related to the high volume
manufacturing of hard disk drive subsystems and other computer products.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Designed the hardware and software for implementing a burn-in procedure for
hard disk drives;
 Improved procedures for packaging and handling hard disk drives;
 Evaluated, selected and managed hard disk drive vendors and associated
products.

MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING MGR. – INSTRUMENTS DIVISION (1979 – 1982) Position


reported to the General Manager, with the principal responsibility for the high volume
manufacturing of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Additional duties included the managing of
the Electrical, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering departments.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 Evaluated, selected and installed auto-insertion production equipment for printed


circuit board assembly;
 Evaluated and selected in-circuit testing equipment;
 Created a high volume floppy disk drive manufacturing operation which grew into a
separate production facility;
 Evaluated competitive floppy and hard disk drives for computers;
 Designed and implemented an EDI-based purchase order processing system;
 Designed and installed an Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) for MIS computers.
