2. The temperature 𝑇 at a point (𝑥, 𝑦) occupying the region 𝑅 = (𝑥, 𝑦) 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2, 0 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 𝜋 on a
metallic plate is given by 𝑇 𝑥, 𝑦 = 100 𝑒 𝑥 − 𝑒 −𝑥 sin 𝑦.
At the point (1,1) find,
a. The rate at which temperature increases in the direction of 𝑥 axis.
b. The rate at which temperature increases in the direction of 𝑦 axis.
c. The rate at which temperature increases along the line 𝑦 = 𝑥.
d. The highest rate at which temperature increases.
e. The direction in which the temperature increases rapidly.
3. The possible error involved in measuring each dimension of a rectangular box is ±0.2mm. The
dimensions of the box are 𝑥 = 100𝑐𝑚, 𝑦 = 40𝑐𝑚 and 𝑧 = 30cm. Estimate the propagated error and
the relative error in the calculated volume of the box.

You may assume that the Jacobian is of constant sign in the interior of D.

Where D is the region bounded by the curve 𝑦 = 1 + 𝑥 2 and the 𝑥 − axis and the lines 𝑥 = 0
and 𝑥 = 1.

Where R is the region enclosed by the curves in the 𝑥𝑦 plane as shown in Figure 10.1. Hint: Make the
𝑦
substitution 𝑢 = 𝑥, 𝑣 = 𝑥𝑦. Check whether the transformation is 1-1 on R.
