ASSIGNMENT 11
Distributed during the week starting on 02/08/2010.Assignments 11 and 12 will be discussed

1. i. Given that 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 𝑦 − 1 and 𝑔 𝑥, 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 1. Find the maximum minimum values of

a. 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 , subject to the condition 𝑔 𝑥, 𝑦 = 0
b. 𝑔 𝑥, 𝑦 , subject to the condition 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 = 0 using two different methods.

ii. Find the volume of the largest rectangular box with edges parallel to the coordinate axes and inscribed
in the ellipsoid
𝑥2 𝑦2 𝑧2
+ + = 1.
𝑎2 𝑏2 𝑐 2
2. The temperature 𝑇 at a point (𝑥, 𝑦) occupying the region 𝑅 = (𝑥, 𝑦) 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2, 0 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 𝜋 on a
metallic plate is given by 𝑇 𝑥, 𝑦 = 100 𝑒 𝑥 − 𝑒 −𝑥 sin 𝑦.
At the point (1,1) find,
a. The rate at which temperature increases in the direction of 𝑥 axis.
b. The rate at which temperature increases in the direction of 𝑦 axis.
c. The rate at which temperature increases along the line 𝑦 = 𝑥.
d. The highest rate at which temperature increases.
e. The direction in which the temperature increases rapidly.

3. The possible error involved in measuring each dimension of a rectangular box is ±0.2mm. The
dimensions of the box are 𝑥 = 100𝑐𝑚, 𝑦 = 40𝑐𝑚 and 𝑧 = 30cm. Estimate the propagated error and
the relative error in the calculated volume of the box.

4. Evaluate each of the following integrals, where 𝑅 = 0,1 × 0,1 ;

𝑎. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 3 𝑑𝑥𝑑𝑦 𝑏. ln 𝑥 + 1 𝑦 + 1 𝑑𝑥𝑑𝑦
𝑅 𝑅

5. A transformation is defined for points 𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ ℝ2 by : 𝑢 = 𝑥𝑒 𝑦 , 𝑣 = 𝑦𝑒 𝑥 .

a. Find the Jacobian of the transformation.
b. Sketch the four contours 𝑣 = 1, 𝑣 = 𝑒, 𝑢 = 1 𝑢 = 𝑒 in the 𝑥 − 𝑦 plane
c. Let D be the finite region in the positive quadrant of the 𝑥, 𝑦 plane enclosed by the four
contours mentioned in ii.
d. By applying the given transformation , evaluate the integral

𝑥 2 𝑦 3 − 𝑥 3 𝑦 4 𝑒 4𝑥+3𝑦 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
𝐷
You may assume that the Jacobian is of constant sign in the interior of D.

6. Evaluate the volume enclosed by the surface 𝑧 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 in the first quadrant between the two circles
of radii 1 and 2 and centered at (0,0).

7. i. Evaluate the following double integral
1 𝑒
𝑦
𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑥
𝑥=0 𝑦=𝑒 𝑥 ln 𝑦
ii. Evaluate

𝑥𝑒 𝑦 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
𝐷
Where D is the region bounded by the curve 𝑦 = 1 + 𝑥 2 and the 𝑥 − axis and the lines 𝑥 = 0
and 𝑥 = 1.
8. Evaluate
𝑦𝑑𝑥𝑑𝑦
𝑅
Where R is the region enclosed by the curves in the 𝑥𝑦 plane as shown in Figure 10.1. Hint: Make the
𝑦
substitution 𝑢 = 𝑥, 𝑣 = 𝑥𝑦. Check whether the transformation is 1-1 on R.

ASSIGNMENT 12
1. Given the data points
𝑥 0 2 3

2. The data points given below lie on a polynomial.

𝑥 -2 1 4 -1 3 -4
