ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS ON “PRINCESS DIARY” MOVIE

Abstract

Elaborating more what is the true meaning of the illocutionary act

sentences is very interesting. One of the examples of using illocutionary act
sentences that could be seen is in the “Princess Diary” movie. The sentences are
in a various way such as in an affirmative sentence (She's my favorite. I hope
you like omelets), a negative sentence (I’m not here), and interrogative sentence
(Am I going to be disappointed in you?). Although the sentences are in various
sentences but all of them have one concern that is asking or making the hearer do
or not do something (Illocutionary acts). Of course, to know what the speaker
truly means, it needs the hearer’s smartness to understand the situation context. It
is important because if the hearer fails to understand the situation context, the
speaker’s intention will not fulfilled. It means that the objective of communication
is not succeeded.

Introduction

In communication, people usually use the language to present what they

want. For example when they want to make other people do something, they use
the sentence that indicates what they intend. It can be seen from this situation,
when they feel so hot in one room, then s/he said, “Would you open all windows,
please? It’s very hot here.” They expect that the hearer will act what they request.
Or maybe in another occasion, somebody says, “Oh… You could not do that! It is
very dangerous! when s/he talks with another in very uncomfortable situation. But
using the clear sentence in daily communication does not always happen. People
often use certain sentence to say what they intend. For example, someone might
say: It’s hot in here! (locution), meaning: I want some fresh air! (illocution) and
the perlocutionary effect might be that someone opens the window.

 From the example above, we could see that the speaker did not say what
s/he wanted in direct way. S/he used certain utterance (illocutionary act sentence)
that mains something very different to ask the hearer to bring him/her some fresh
water. Of course, this might be created misunderstanding or other communication
problems if there is no same understanding of utterance itself and the situation
context between the speaker and the hearer. We could imagine what happened if
the hearer could not understand the intended meaning of the speaker. According
to Thomas (1995), it stated that in order to understand an utterance, people not
only have to assign sense to words, but also they must assign context of situation
such as people who involved, a place where the conversation takes, and the time
when the conversation are going on.

Furthermore, people say illocutionary act utterance in various sentences so

that the hearer has to be smart in capturing what the speaker intend. Elaborating
more what is the true meaning of the illocutionary act sentences is very
interesting. One of the examples of using illocutionary act sentences that could be
seen is in the “Princess Diary” movie. The family and comedy movie contains
many illocutionary act utterances and it has created the writer’s curiosity to
elaborate more what the true meaning of each illocutionary act utterance in that
movie. Thus, this paper explored more about the illocutionary act in the “Princess
Diary” movie.

Literature Review

Illocutionary Act

Illocutionary act is a technical term introduced by John L. Austin in

investigations concerning what he calls 'performative' and 'constative utterances'.
According to Austin's original exposition in How to Do Things With Words, an
illocutionary act is an act (1) for the performance of which I must make it clear to

some other person that the act is performed (Austin speaks of the 'securing of
uptake'), and (2) the performance of which involves the production of what Austin
calls 'conventional consequences' as, e.g., rights, commitments, or obligations. For
example, in order to successfully perform a promise, I must make clear to my
audience that the promise occurs, and undertake an obligation to do the promised
thing: hence promising is an illocutionary act in the present sense.

However, for certain reasons, among them insufficient knowledge of

Austin's original exposition, the term 'illocutionary act' is nowadays understood in
a number of other ways. Many define the term with reference to examples, saying
such things as that any speech act like stating, asking, commanding, promising,
and so on is an illocutionary act; they then often fail to give any sense of the
expression illocutionary act capable of making clear what being an illocutionary
act essentially consists in.

It is also often emphasized that Austin introduced the illocutionary act by

means of a contrast with other kinds of acts: the illocutionary act, he says, is an
act performed in saying something, as contrasted with a locutionary act, the act of
saying something, and also contrasted with a perlocutionary act, an act performed
by saying something. But it may be misleading to distinguish between 'kinds' of
acts, for these are not separate categories of speech, but instead describe different
levels on which speech might work.

Any one particular speech event may have any combination of

locutionary, illocutionary or perlocutionary effects. Still another conception of an
illocutionary act goes back to Schiffer's famous book 'Meaning' (1972, 103), in
which the illocutionary act is represented as just the act of meaning something.

The “Princess Diary” Movie

This movie tells about the beautiful princess who could not to be queen
until she gets marriage, then someone who still has the relatives with her try to

take her crown. As a comedy and family movie, this movie has entertained
enough.

The film opens with Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), Crown Princess
of the fictional country of Genovia, graduating from Princeton University's
Woodrow Wilson School. Mia, Joe (Héctor Elizondo), and Fat Louie the cat all
fly to Genovia for Mia's 21st birthday and for her to take her grandmother,
Clarisse Renaldi's (Julie Andrews) place as Queen of Genovia. At her birthday
ball, she has to dance with all the eligible bachelors. She accidentally steps on a
mysterious young man's shoe and dances with him. When Mia's tiara falls off,
Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies) catches it and it is revealed that he's
planning to steal her royal position.

Later, Viscount Mabrey mentions another heir to the crown, his nephew
Lord Devereaux (Chris Pine). Mia cannot be Queen unless she gets married in 30
days. Clarisse invites Lord Devereaux to stay at the palace and Mia is shocked
when she sees he is the man she flirted with at the ball, Lord Nicholas Devereaux.
Mia is joined with her best friend Lily Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo) and later
they search the possible husband. Mia chooses Andrew Jacoby (Callum Blue),
Duke of Kenilworth and days later they are engaged. Mabrey and Nicholas plot
against the engagement and so Nicholas starts flirting with Mia.

Princess Mia starts to practice firing a flaming arrow as part of the

ceremonies for when she is crowned Queen. At a garden party, Mia gets annoyed
seeing Nicholas with Lady Elissa. They argue near an isolated fountain and
Nicholas suddenly kisses Mia. After that Nicholas gets second thoughts about
stealing the crown and Mabrey realizes that Nicholas has fallen in love with Mia.
Later, Mia is practicing archery when Nicholas tells her that he's leaving, but he
wants to meet Mia for the last time. Mia is upset, but agrees to meet him. They go
to the lake, dance and fall asleep. When they wake up, Mia sees a man in a boat
videotaping them. Mia thinks Nicholas set her up and storms off. When she gets
back home, the video has already been broadcast on TV. She apologizes to the

disappointed Andrew and together do they realize that they don't love each other.
But he says that he has promised to marry her and a gentleman never breaks his
promise.

When Mabrey leaves for the wedding, Nicholas is debating on whether he

should go also. Gretchen tells him that his uncle set up what happened at the lake.
Nicholas leaves for the ceremony on his grandfather's penny-farthing bicycle, the
only means of wheeled transport available. Meanwhile Mia is walking down the
aisle, but runs out realizing she can't marry Andrew. Clarisse goes after her and
tells her not to make the same mistake she did and give up finding love. Mia
walks back inside, saying she wants to become Queen without a husband, but
Mabrey says his nephew should be King. Nicholas declines the crown, Parliament
votes and the law is changed. Clarisse asks Joe for his hand in marriage and they
get married. Nicholas confesses his love for Mia and she is crowned Queen of
Genovia.

Research Method

Research Design

This research employed a case study. According to Cohen, et al (2007) a case

study is a specific instance that is frequently designed to illustrate a more general

principle, it is the study of an instance in action. The single instance is of a

bounded system, for example a child, a clique, a class, a school, a community. It

strives to portray ‘what it is like’ to be in a particular situation, to catch the close

up reality and ‘thick description.’ In this study, a particular situation is the

illocutionary acts in “Princess Diary” movie.

Object of the Study

Object of the study is the illocutionary acts sentences in “Princess Diary” movie.

It consists of the script of the movie that related to the illocutionary acts. And the

writer got a source of data from the “Princess Diary” movie.

Procedures

In doing this study, the data was collected by watching the movie, and then the

writer used a script of the movie to elaborate more in order to understand the

content more deeply. Then, she classified the texts based on the topic. After that,

she took the texts which related to the topic. And then she focused on the

illocutionary act sentences only to be analyzed.

Technique of analyzing data

The data collected contained of the texts which related to the topic that is the

illocutionary act sentences. The sentences are in a various sentences such as

affirmative, negative, and positive sentence. Then the writer analyzed them one by

one and the result of the data analyzing is in descriptive form.

Findings and Discussion

 In this paper, the discussion focused on the illocutionary act sentences in
“Princess Diary” movie. After analyzing the conversation that happened between
the speaker and the hearer in the movie, it was found that many illocutionary act
sentences in this movie. The result of the analyzing is explained below:

Situation (1)

Joseph, a security head of the palace talks to the queen. They are still waiting to
the two invited guests, Viscount Mabrey and Lord Devereaux.

Locution: The limousine is at the gates, madam.

Illocution: would you please welcome to our guest, madam.
Perlocution: the queen stands up from her seat and walks outside to welcome her
guests.

Situation (2)

Viscount Mabrey arrives at the palace with his nephew, Lord Devereaux and the
palace guards are ready to open the car’s door.

Locution: You just have to open the door before the passenger dies of old age.
Illocution: can you open the door quickly?
Perlocution: the head of palace staff apologize to Mabrey.

Situation (3)

Viscount Mabrey talks to Joseph with angry expression after Princess Mia stepped
hardly down Lord Devereaux’s feet with her sharp high-heel.

Locution: She's training to be a flamenco dancer.

Illocution: The princess behaved very impolite.

Perlocution: the queen apologizes to them both and bring them some ice for
curing it.

Situation (4)

The queen, the palace secretary, Joseph, Mia, and her best friend are choosing the
aristocrats’ picture to be Mia’s husband in arranging her marriage. They are
discussing about Antoine Suisson of Paris.

Locution: Mm. His boyfriend thinks he's handsome also.

Illocution: He is a gay. Don’t choose him.
Perlocution: They cancel to choose him and move to other pictures.

Situation (5)

Mia and Andrew Jacoby, her husband to be are making a date. They are
accompanied by Andrew’s parent, the queen, the secretary, the palace staff and
the palace guard. When Mia and Andrew are in a romance action, the queen tells
to all people.

Locution: Shall we have some tea?

Illocution: Give Mia and Andrew a little privacy to get closer. It’s better for us not
disturbing them.
Perlocution: all people who involved at that time walk away from the couple.

Situation (6)

An old man gives to the queen and the princess, a chicken in a monthly ancient
Genovian tradition. Then he said to the princess an utterance like below;

Locution: She's my favorite. I hope you like omelets.

Illocution: Would you please see my present for you my princess?
Perlocution: the princess opens the basket cover that chicken is in it.

Situation (7)

When Princess Mia must review the royal guard with riding a horse, Mabrey has
tricked Mia’s horse and an accident happened. After that, in workshop, Joseph
tells to Lord Deveareux who is still insulting Mia.

Locution: Am I going to be disappointed in you?

Illocution: Do not even try annoying Princess Mia this time!
Perlocution: Lord Deveareux walks away from the place and apologize to him.

Situation (8)

Princess Mia is still hiding from her two servants. They are trying to look for her,
and finally one of them has found her, but Mia still does not want to be disturbed
and she said to her servant by saying this utterance;

Locution: I’m not here.

Illocution: I still want to be alone and please do not disturb me!
Perlocution: a servant moves to other room and leaves Mia alone.

Situation (9)

One day, the queen holds one program including of inviting many guests, there is
a singing program, getting lunch, and other nice programs. In the end of time,
when all guests go home, Lionel, the security staff assistant, inform to other
security staff by uttering the sentence below:

Locution: Eagle is leaving! Eagle is leaving!

Illocution: The queen will leave out from the place and go back to her palace.
Perlocution: some personal palace staffs are close to her and ready to guard her.

Situation (10)

In the kingdom ceremonial program, the queen says good bye to all her guest.
When all guests are leaving from the palace, the queen says to her personal
assistant, Olivia with the sentence as follow:

Locution: Olivia, enough goodbyes.

Illocution: The program has finished and we come back in the palace now.
Perlocution: Olivia gets the umbrella down.

Conclusion

From the findings and discussion above, we have found many

illocutionary act sentences in “Princess Diary” movie. The sentences are in a
various way such as in an affirmative sentence (She's my favorite. I hope you
like omelets), a negative sentence (I’m not here), and interrogative sentence (Am
I going to be disappointed in you?). Although the sentences are in various
sentences but all of them have one concern that is asking or making the hearer do
or not do something (Illocutionary acts). Of course, to know what the speaker
truly means, it needs the hearer’s smartness to understand the situation context. It
is important because if the hearer fails to understand the situation context, the
speaker’s intention will not fulfilled. It means that the objective of communication
