A general contractor operating throughout Germany plan-
ned a shopping center at a city center and commissioned
TÜV Rheinland with the complete package, which not only
included quality inspection of construction, but also the
mechanical and electrical installations as well as the tech-
nical and construction-related fire protection. In order to
avoid problems with the owners of neighboring properties,
he also commissioned a noise and vibration analysis. In
addition, TÜV Rheinland supported the contactor in rela-
tion to safety at work by providing health and safety coor-
dination on the major construction site.

There were no objections during the final acceptance inspec-

tion for the mechanical and electrical installations of the build-
ing. The complete package, and in particular the monitor-
ing of quality during construction, paid off double – the work
was on time, the quality was excellent. And this was achieved
with particularly low coordination costs: TÜV Rheinland
made one central contact person available – for all matters.

The general contractor was now in a position to effectively

support his marketing and include high-visibility references

A case study:
For the new construction of a rehabili-
tation clinic, a modern building com-
plex featuring unusually futuristic ar-
chitecture was planned – 5 stories and
a 15,000 m² net area. In accordance with
the requirements of the architect, only
the best building materials and products
were to be used. In this way, the archi-
tect not only ensured that his high de-
mands regarding rigidity were met, but
also his expectations relating to the vi-
sual impact of the concrete.
The contract was awarded to a large
concrete manufacturer who has been
working with TÜV Rheinland for many
years. The experts from TÜV Rheinland
tested the newly developed high-
strength concrete and its constituents.
They were also commissioned with the
monitoring of the manufacture in the
ready-mixed concrete plant as well as its
processing on site. During a later con-
struction stage, it became necessary to
report on the facade cladding of natu-
ral stonework and its anchoring, thus
opening a further field of operations for
the specialists from TÜV Rheinland.

When it comes to civil engineering, TÜV Rheinland can provide convincing

only in the planning and implementation of new projects, but also in the
planning and renovation of existing infrastructure – quite a central task
for all municipalities.

A case study:
The civil engineering department of a municipality specified
the testing, the evaluation under the aspects of double-entry
accounting and the development of the necessary recon-
struction measures for the municipal road network includ-
ing pedestrian areas, a bridge and a tunnel.

Thanks to its comprehensive technical skills, both in the check-

ing of structures and in road condition surveys, TÜV Rheinland
was able to offer a complete solution for the traffic infrastruc-
ture and was awarded the contract for the entire package.

First of all, the road network was checked and assessed using
special measuring vehicles. Innovative accredited measuring
systems digitally recorded the substance characteristics of
the roads, such as cracks and patches. At the same time, the
longitudinal and transversal evenness of the roads was de-
termined using laser technology. In this way, the condition
of the roads could be assessed quickly, precisely and reliably
without impeding the flow of traffic.

In order to prepare a well-founded concept for the mainte-

nance works which would integrate type, scope and priority
level of the construction, the causes of the defects had to be
determined. For this purpose, non-destructive measurements
of the load-bearing capabilities of the road construction were
carried out at the damaged areas using the Falling Weight
Deflectometer.

During the examination of the bridge according to DIN 1076,

the cooperation with TÜV Rheinland also paid off. All defects
were discovered thanks to an automated and highly sensitive
permanent monitoring, the bridge could remain in use until
reconstruction work was carried out – without risk.

Finally, TÜV Rheinland was also able to convincingly answer

all questions regarding the safety of the tunnel. And all these
operations were coordinated by the project manager from
TÜV Rheinland – real added value for the head of the munici-
pal civil engineering department.
