A patient under going the AVBD chemotherapy treatment can be a day patient. Prior to the
beginning of the treatment, some blood tests have to be done. If the results of the blood tests
come out as positive, the treatment is started. When starting the chemotherapy treatment, the
nurse may insert a cannula, i.e. a flexible and thin tube into the vein in the patient¶s arm or hand.
Some patients may take their chemotherapy treatment through a thin tube made of plastic, which
is inserted into the vein around the patient¶s collarbone or below his skin.

The drugs used in AC chemotherapy treatment are generally given to the patient in the form of
injection or as infusion. The entire process may take 2 hours. A patient who is treated as a day
patient can return home after the treatment. The doctors remove the cannula once the treatment is
complete. However, the doctors give the patient some anti-sickness medicines. These medicines
help to prevent the occurrence of any side effects. The patient should consume these anti-
sickness drugs as prescribed by the doctor, even if they do not face any side effects.

The doctors prepare a proper regime of the ABVD chemotherapy treatment for his patient. The
doctors on the first day of the treatment give the patient a prescribed dose of doxorubicin,
dacarbazine, bleomycin and vinblastine drugs. This is generally followed by a period of rest.
During this time no treatment will be done for 2 weeks. On the 15th day the patient is given the
same drugs again. This is again followed by a 2 weeks rest period. The 4 week period of
treatment constitutes a cycle of the chemotherapy treatment. The next cycle of chemotherapy
treatment for the patient starts on the 29th day. The entire treatment is given in 2-8 cycles which
may take a time of 2-8 months.
