DESALINATION PLANTS START UP PROCEDURE :

1. Check for all L/C on equipments. If not returned ask the respective dept. to
return when they completed the work.
2. Check for all manholes for properly closed condition.
3. Get the concurrence from the shift supervisor for startup of the respective unit.
4. Check for proper operation of all MOV’s and pneumatic operated valves
(where ever possible )
5. Close all the drains ( SW line drains, Evaporator drains & water box drains)
except steam line drains and steam traps.
6. Keep open the line vents & water box vents.
7. Start charging of SW to heat rejection system.
a. First open the MOV from control room and ask the field operator to open
the isolation valve slowly. When all the air was removed from the line and
enabling sufficient water flow thru vents close the vent valves. Keep the
isolation valve fully open.
b. Slowly increase the flow with drain CV . Adjust the flow WRT the SW
header pressure and If sufficient SW pumps are not available start one SW
pump and increase the flow in other desal units.
c. Keep the flow @ 10000 cu.m and charge the SW to vac. System( min.flow
500 cu.m)
8. Make ready the make up water to deaerator ( open the isolation valves before
& after CV and keep the bypass valve in closed condition.) Open the CV
slowly and keep the flow @ 2000 cu.m.& Start the Anti foam dozing pump.
9. Check for increase in last stage evaporator level and counter check with the
field operator. When the level is 600 mm reduce the flow.
10. Make ready the blow down pump.
11. Keep the blow down CV & emergency blow down valves closed.
12. Blow down pump start permissves.
a. Suction & Discharge valves open.
b. Motor & Pump brg.temp.below 85 deg.
c. Motor winding temp. below 125 deg.
d. Pump EPB released.
e. Last stage level > 300mm.
Blow down pump trip functions.
a. Last stage level < 300 mm
b. Pump & motor brg. Temp > 95 deg.
c. Pump EPB pressed.
d. Blow down CV opening < 2%
12(a). Start the blow down pump.
13. Keep the brine heater Diff.Pr. CV closed and water box vents in Open, start
the evaporator tube filling slowly by opening the tube filling valve.
14. When the tubes are filled close the water box vents after assuring sufficient
water flow.( keep open the 1,2,3 stage vents partially for safety) Pressure will
be little less than the SW drain header pr.
15. Make ready the Brine R/C pumps.Start first BRP when getting the permissive.
Keep the flow more than 8000 cu.m and start the anti scale dozing pump.
Pump start permissives.
a. Suction pr. > min.
b. Suction & discharge valves open
c. Brg. Temp. < 90 deg.
d. Motor winding temp. < 120 deg.
e. Brine R/C control valve 10 – 13 % open
f. Brine heater DP control valve 15 -18 % open.
g. Pump EPB released.
h. Tube filling valve closed.
Pump Trip functions.
a. Last stage level < 300 mm.
b. Brine R/C flow less than 8000 cu.m after 120 sec.during startup And
40 sec during normal running.
c. Pump brg.temp. > 100 deg.
d. Motor brg.temp. > 95 deg. & motor winding temp. > 140 deg.
16. Warm up the steam line to ejector system and take the hogger ejector into
service. ( open the steam valve then open the air valve)
17. Vacuum will start raise from stage I and in deaerator.
18. When the vacuum reaches 240 mbar take the main ejectors. Open the II stage
ejector steam & air valves and then open the I stage ejector steam and air
valves.
19. Cutout the hogger ejector.( Close the air valve then close the steam valve)
20. Warm up the LP steam line to brine heater.
21. Check the BH condensate level & keep @ 400 mm and make ready the
condensate pumps.
Pump start permissives.
a. Suction & discharge valves open.
b. R/C valve open.
c. Brg. Temp . < 85 deg.
d. BH level > 150 mm.
Pump Trip functions.
a. BH level < 150 mm.
b. Pump brg. Temp. > 95 deg.
c. Pump discharge valve closed ( after 30 sec during start up & after 70
sec. During normal running.)
22. Open the steam isolation valve ( MOV) fully.
23. Open the steam control valve by pulse and open the DESH spray control
valves @ 50% manually.
24. Steam isolation valve will open only if the steam cv is < 2 % open. And the
isolation valve will close for the following parameters.
a. Both brine R/C pump trips. ( no time delay )
b. Both anti scale pumps trips. ( after 10 min. )
c. MP steam to vac.system CV closed. ( after 10 min.)
d. LP steam temp. before BH > 135 deg. ( warning at 125 deg.) 2*3
transmeters
e. LP steam pressure before BH > 2.1 bar ( warning at 1.85 bar ) 2*3
transmeters.
f. Top brine temp. (TBT) 116 deg. ( warning at 114 deg.) 2*3 transmeters.

g. If air supply solenoid valve for steam CV closed ( after 30 sec.)

h. Desal trip push button ON. ( no time delay)
i. Steam trip funtion ON at DCS screen ( no time delay)
25. When the TBT is 65 deg. Make ready the distillate pumps.
Pump start permissives.
a. Suction valve open.
b. Discharge valve close.
c. R/C valve open.
d. Distillate CV closed.
e. Pump brg. Temp.< 85 deg.
f. Motor winding temp. < 130 deg.

d. Pump EPB pressed.
e. Discharge valve not open after 200 sec during startup and 100 sec
during normal running.
25. Start the selected distillate pump and keep the flow @ 1000 cu.m. When the
distillate conductivity is less than 80 ms divert the distillate to blending
plant. At 100 ms distillate will be dumped to culvert when valve is on auto.
26. Adjust the brine flow if required.
27. When the TBT is 82 deg. Check for the c/o of vacuum vent valve to I stage
condenser from vent condenser. If not, change over manually.
28. Start the second Brine R/C pump. And increase the steam flow to raise the
