Goodness
Included in the “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-
23), “goodness” is an easy word to misinterpret in
our modern day. The original Greek word, agatho-
syne, primarily means “uprightness of heart and
life,” according to Strong’s.
What makes this word hard to define is how we so
often use the word today. We describe myriads of
people as “good.” But we must consider, what is
our standard for giving such a description?
Often, we base “goodness” upon how someone
treats us, or how someone lives in a general way. If
he or she is one who is generally honest, a hard
working business person, and kind to his or her
family, then we usually give that person the label of
“good.”
What we must consider, though, is what the real
standard is. Considering that we are speaking of a
Biblical word, we must remember that it is God
and His Word that must be our standard. If we are
going to strive for goodness, we must strive to live
like Christ.
