What are Mycotoxins ?

Mycotoxins are toxins

produced by Fungi

Co-occurence of Mycotoxins

66
Multiple Mycotoxicosis
Co-occurance of Mycotoxins is common in feed ingredients and complete feed. The
toxicity respose and clinical sign observed in animals when more than one Mycotoxin is
present in feed are complex and diverse. Mycotoxin combination exert a greater
negative impact on health and productivity of animals. These toxicological interactions
can be additive, synergistic or antagonistic. Combined interactions can result in
set of diagnostic ill effects that differ from the sum of individual effect. These toxin –
toxin interaction cause greater damage to the animal and silently kill huge productivity.

Mycotoxins Type of interaction

Aflatoxin +Synergistic
Ochratoxin A
Aflatoxin + T-2Synergistic

Damaging effect of mycotoxins

C attle feed is an excellent medium for growth of these moulds, with the risk of
fungal growth increasing rapidly when there are high level of moisture in the
air. When the feed is ingested and subsequently digested in gastro-intestinal
tract, mycotoxins are released from feed and absorbed across the intestine,
enter the blood stream and transported to various organs causing cellular
malfunctions.

Comprehensive protective Solution
Solution to these limitation required just not mineral binders rather
comprehensive broad spectrum mycotoxin inhibitor, binder and bio-
neutralizer is required for effective control of Mycotoxin menace.

1919
Activated charcoal
v Charcoal is obtained by burning wood, nutshells, coconut husks,
animal bones, and/or other carbonaceous (carbon-containing)
materials.

v It is activated by heating it with steam to approximately 1000 oC

in the absence of oxygen (O2).

v A single gram of such material can have 400 to 1,200 m2 of

surface area, 98% of it is internal.

v A C is a relatively non-specific sequestrate with great potential as

an antidote for acute exposure to several mycotoxins.

v Different grades of activated carbon have variable effects in

adsorbing mycotoxins and other toxins.

Activated Carbon in

v Pharmaceutical grade with a

particle size of 200 mesh.

v It is used as discoloring agent in

vitamin tonics.

v M B index of the 250 mg/g

indicates the mesoporosity which
adsorbs mycotoxins effectively.

Organic Acids

The organic acids in Avsorb Forte

posses an inhibitory influence on
Mould growth and thus reduces further
production of Mycotoxins
Apart from Mycotoxins they also binds
pesticides & fertilizers in the feed
Calcium Montmorillonite
(Special Silicates)

v Posses a characteristic of 2:1 Layer structure.

v High surface area of 600- 800 sq.mt/gram.

v Non-expansible clay with high negative charge.

v Aflatoxins and Ochratoxins are positively charged toxins.

v High affinity for Aflatoxin B1 followed by Ochratoxins. Also

binding is rapid so removes from gut before absorbed.

Characteristics Of An Effective
Toxin Binder

v Able to bind most of the toxins ●

present in feed.
v Binding efficacy should be retained ●
till the excretion of toxin
v Should have maximum surface area ●
for adsorption
v Should not bind other nutrients and ●
feed additives
