practice deployment and business process optimization
CATIA V5 Release 10 increases its leading end-to-end product development
process coverage for automotive, aerospace, consumer goods and
electrical and electronics industries with 13 new products and 81
enhanced applications integrating intelligent productive features
and dedicated expert solutions. Small and medium businesses will
find CATIA V5 Release 10 easier than ever to use and implement,
with extended process coverage and enhanced integration to
SMARTEAM. All companies can use the new CATIA Business
Process Knowledge Templates product to leverage advanced
knowledge capture capabilities. CATIA V5 Release 10 improves
business process efficiency by interactively capturing, automating,
and deploying best practices into user-defined vertical applications.

The unique Product Process Resources (PPR) model is extended in

CATIA V5 Release 10. It enables exposure of CATIA application data (digital
mock-up, knowledge, analysis and kinematics) to allow management within the
ENOVIA configured product structure. Collaborative Workspace is enhanced through
the extension in publication, assembly links management, and relational design.
The new ENOVIA Work Package Exchange product allows OEM to reconcile supplier
CATIA design within its ENOVIA environment while providing offline, in-context
design capability to maximize collaborative design efficiency at all levels of the
supply chain.

In CATIA V5 Release 10, the Automotive Body-in-White process is addressed

through the new Automotive Body-in-White Fastening Platform 3 (P3) product.
It provides associative definition and management of welding and mechanical
fastening. Detailed 3D design in Powertrain/consumer goods/plastic parts is
enriched with blend vertex fillets and access to sketch or feature functional tolerance
values as parameters. The end-to-end automotive and aerospace harness design
process is complemented by the new Electrical Harness Flattening (EHF) product
that enables validation of manufacturability. The new Prismatic Machining Preparation
Assistant (PMA) product offers advanced Numerical Control (NC) feature recognition
techniques, to compress the design-to-manufacturing process.

Large assembly management, drafting, welding and electrical design are

strengthened for the industrial machinery and industrial components. New tailored
P1 Electrical Harness Installation (EH1) and Generative Shape Design (GS1) products
enrich the entry PLM solutions. Part Design Feature Recognition (FR1) introduces the
ability to allow rapid modification of data from multiple sources (IGES/STEP/MultiCAD).
Performance improvements for large assembly management with visualization mode
update, Drafting Generation on Tessellated Representations (CGR), and Enhanced
Interactive Drafting deliver new levels of productivity.

4
Definition of best practices, capture of know-how, and process automation can
be achieved in a simple and intuitive way, without specialist programming skills.
Key knowledgeholders can capture and automate the critical business processes,
design, and engineering tasks, embedding core-knowledge rules and checks
within those processes. The result is vertical user-defined applications that embody
predefined methodologies derived from corporate best practices. Using these
capabilities can dramatically improve productivity and competitiveness across a
wide range of detail processes.

Data inherent to kinematics, analysis, catalogues, digital mock-up, and knowledge

(rules, formulas and checks) can now be exposed and managed through ENOVIA.
Design-in-context and concurrent engineering are enriched with new publishing
possibilities (create and save modifications in the database), and document-to-document
link management. Design-in-context flexibility and usability is greatly improved
by providing users with the new capability to reuse components while preserving
relational design integrity. The definition and modification of model-to-model links
have been improved through the ability to manage link-by-link through 3D selection
or specification tree selection. This allows the reuse of components in a new
environment with a complete flexibility to manage associativity and optimize relational
design efficiency and productivity.

CATIA-ENOVIA Work Package Exchange comes in two flavours. A capture and

reconciliation component (P2) allows the OEM to extract ‘workspaces’ of subsystem
data from their complete ENOVIA Virutal Product Manager (VPM) product definition.
It allows modified workspaces to be reconciled with the master database. For
the supplier, the P1 product enables the supplier to complete design activities in
the context of the workpackage and then send the updated work package to the
customer, maximizing collaborative design efficiency at all levels of the supply chain.

Extended methodologies for multiCAD working are provided through feature

recognition, enhanced healing and generative drafting capabilities on multiCAD
data. The new Part Design Feature Recognition product manages global and local
feature recreation from B-Rep models for improved engineering collaboration. New
‘healing’ analysis and repair tools (for example, ‘local join’) allow effective geometry
recovery through local management and control. The new capability to generate
drawings directly from CATIA CGR format (tessellated models) completes the
process for federated assemblies containing parts from multiple source systems
(multiCAD) providing an effective open collaboration environment.

CATIA V5 Release 10 delivers 13 new products and enhanced capabilities conceived and refined
in close cooperation with customers deploying CATIA V5 across their extended enterprises.

5
Flexible packaging
CATIA Version 5 is packaged to provide an easy way to select the solution best
suited to usage profiles and process requirements. At the heart of this model are
predefined configurations which include selections of products targeted at specific
tasks or processes. To further tailor the solution, products can be added to these
configurations to address broader or specialist requirements, either as shareable or
add-on products. Products can be ordered in three ways:

• As an integral part of a standard configuration

• As an add-on to a configuration
• As a shareable license which can be moved between configurations.
(See diagram on page 7.)

The level of capability required for specific tasks or processes can also vary due to
differing product or process complexity or technological requirements. To address
this and allow the most cost effective implementation, CATIA V5 products are
organised on three different levels.

LMS International Virtual.Lab Creates an exterior acoustic mesh from a structural mesh. The unique None
Pre-Acoustics approach can be likened to wrapping the structure with a rubber sheet:
the element size of this rubber mesh being related to the frequency
range of interest. Virtual.Lab reduces the acoustic meshing process
from weeks to hours.

Virtual.Lab The tool creates a cavity mesh starting from a structural FE mesh. The None
Cavity Meshing tool closes all the openings, it bridges across gaps and creates a new
mesh on the surface, for a BEM solution – or a new volume mesh, for
a FEM solution. The volume mesh is hex-dominant. Special algorithms
ensure a homogeneous element size for optimum acoustic solution

NC Manufacturing
With the completeness of the product portfolio and the easy-to-use knowledge-
based V5 architecture, CATIA V5 NC Manufacturing exceeds the capabilities of all
existing NC Manufacturing applications.

• High efficiency in part programming... Thanks to tight integration between tool

path definition and computation, tool path verification and output creation ; but
also thanks to machining operations with multi-pass and multi-level support and
automated rework in roughing and finishing, the user will machine right the first time
and therefore boost the production quality.
• Effective change management... Thanks to the high level of associativity between
product engineering, manufacturing processes and resources (PPR), companies
are managing easier the concurrent engineering and manufacturing flows and thus
reducing the design to manufacturing cycle time and ‘kill costs’.
• High level of automation and standardization... By integrating CATIA V5’s
pervasive KnowledgeWare capabilities (manufacturing intent, macros storage, etc.),
NC products allow the capture of skills and reuse of proven manufacturing know-how
that avoid re-inventing existing information and allow the testing of new ideas in a
shorter time.
• Optimized tool path and reduced machining time... By offering a wide set of
flexible high speed machining operations (i.e. Concentric Roughing, Z-level Milling,
Spiral Milling, 5-axis Flank Contouring, etc.), V5 NC products decrease the time
needed to execute shopfloor operations.
• Easy to learn and ease-of-use... Thanks to a very intuitive user interface, users will
be trained faster, they will be able to use all the software capabilities and last but not
least have fun while using CATIA V5 NC software!
• Reduced administration and skills efforts... By covering a wide set of
integrated applications (lathe to 5 axis milling) with a single system, CATIA V5
NC Manufacturing portfolio allows companies to institute strong and long term
easy-to-manage partnerships with their CATIA CAM supplier.

Learning
CATIA and ENOVIA Web-based Learning Solutions (WLS)
CATIA Web-based Learning Solutions is a next generation, easy-to-use, Electronic
Performance Support System (EPSS) that provides from one source access to all the
information and training necessary to assure maximum productivity for the CATIA
and ENOVIA user community. Known as the Companion, its intention is to stay at
every user’s side, ready to answer any learning needs at any time. As such, the
Companion is an essential tool, allowing one to continuously enhance one’s skills
and knowledge, which is crucial to ensure optimum on-the-job performance.

Combining Internet/intranet standards and client/server architecture, WLS is very

easily deployed and administered within a company but may also be easily installed
as a stand-alone application.

Learn CATIA or ENOVIA anytime with your everyday Companion

Companion provides a set of learning resources (a.k.a ‘skillets’) that are carefully
designed to acquire or enhance a given skill in a short time. The skillets include
different learning components (such as show me, do it, monitored practice,
assessment) that provide an interactive experience to the user. The variety of
components makes skillets very adaptive to the learner’s style and preferences.

Skillets can also be packaged in full-blown courses equally accessible via the
Companion desktop. Among them, the update courses provided with each new
release are an efficient way to keep the user community current with the products’
capabilities and thereby make the most efficient usage of CATIA and ENOVIA.

The tracking mechanism and icon-based codification allow the user to quickly
jump to the most relevant component while keeping a global view on the learning
resources actually reviewed. Furthermore, the Companion provides access to several
collaborative tools such as frequently asked questions, forums or e-mail to the
support desk or tutor.

Wide coverage
The CATIA WLS products family consists of:

• CATIA User Companion for Mechanical Design, which addresses the products
delivered with the CATIA Mechanical Design 2 (MD2) configuration #
• CATIA User Companion for Hybrid Design, which extends the previous product to
cover the CATIA Hybrid Design 2 (HD2) configuration

# Initially developed to cover CATIA P2 product, CATIA USER Companion for Mechanical Design has been
enhanced since Release 9 to cover P1 Platform. P2 exclusive learning component has been clearly marked.

50 ibm.com/catia/catiav5r10/learning
• User Companion for Digital Mock-Up covering the DMU Navigator 2, DMU Space
Analysis 2 and DMU Optimizer 2 products
• CATIA User Companion for V4 Mechanical Design covering the CATIA Solid Based
Design configuration. Moreover, this product offers to the CATIA V4 CBT users a
transition path to CATIA V5 WLS.

The WLS family also includes the ENOVIA User Companion for VPM which covers all
the key roles provided in ENOVIA VPM.

Customise to your company needs

Because companies have their own specifications, the Companion Development
Studio provides the capability to fully customise the WLS products. In essence,
the Companion Studio is an intuitive yet sophisticated environment allowing the
development of integrated learning resources for CATIA and ENOVIA.

With the Companion Development Studio, it is possible to develop and assemble

brand new material while also reusing existing ‘skillets’ provided with the User
Companion products of the Web-based Learning Solutions. It is therefore very easy
to quickly rearrange an existing WLS product to have it fit more tightly to the targeted
population, as well as add specific company information (such as procedures and
best practices) to build a customised learning and user reference environment.

The Companion Studio promotes the development of sound learning objects around
the proven and robust instructional design model that is used by the WLS products,
while supporting a continuous improvement process around these objects.

Using a graphical interface, the designer can define a particular architecture

and then populate these objects with learning components developed from
standard authoring tools, such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, Macromedia Flash,
Macromedia DreamWeaver, Microsoft Frontpage, or use the specialised editors
provided with the product to develop simulations or UNIX compatible videos. As a
rule, the Companion architecture is designed in such a way that any HTML-compliant
data that can be used within a company can also be included in Companion learning
objects and can therefore be managed with the Companion Studio. This feature
ensures the compliance of generated data to Internet standards and a fast evolution
with respect to emerging standards.
