• Cx identifies the enable channel for the current measurement (when the 1/3 octave
analysis is enable, on the display appears the line CxSPECTRUM);

• LAS/.../.../... is the parameter relative to current measurement

• XXdB is the value of the current measurement

• ELAPSED is the time elapsed since the measuring started.

The icones on the right of the display identifies:

• I/ : PLAY or PAUSE identifies the measuring state;

• B⇑ or D⇑ or ⇓:

- D⇑: identifies the overflow DIGITAL (EN 61672-1:2003) of the digital acquisition
(check/modify the measuring range in Channels Setting see3.2);

- ⇓(only for acoustic channels): identifies the underrange (EN 61672-1:2003) of the
digital acquisition);

- B⇑(only for Channels 2,3 and 4): identifies the overflow BIAS of the polarization
of the trasducers (this can be generated from the bad connections from 8440with
the trasducers or from problems of sollecitations of the accelerometer that saturate
-DC Shift Effect-);

IMPORTANT

For each current measurement on the display

appears only one of D⇑/⇓/B⇑: the priority of
visualization is the same above indicate:
respectively D⇑, ⇓ and B⇑

• : identifies the battery charge level, see 2.3;

• : Bluetooth™ Module is swicth-on when on the display appears the icone.

When STOP is pressed,JM + N,the display looks like in the following image:

3.3.2 Start Delay

Sets the delay between the start command and the measuring beginning. It is useful to
leave the instrument on the field avoiding noise.

3.3.3 Buffer Step

Allows to set the delay between a measurement saving and the next one (e.g.: if one to
set Buffer Step 1 s, all selected measurements are saved once per second): Buffer Step
can be indicated in minutes, seconds and milliseconds.

IMPORTANT

Buffer Step is correlated with the time constants of

linear averaging, for example LinRMS, LEq, VDV
( see Appendix A)

3.3.4 Measure Lenght

Allows to set the measuring time lenght, selecting it in minutes, seconds, milliseconds.

3.3.5 DAT Recorder

Allows to perform a sound recording, generating audio files with standard extension .wav
that can be managed by a lot of commercial programs such as ADOBE Audition© .

ADVICE

DAT Recorder can be used with Trigger function

(see par. 3.3 below) in order to record .wav files
when the measured level (dB or mm/s) exceeds the
user-defined trigger level.

• Rec. Channel: By pressing ON is possible to select the channel source(s)

(Ch1/Ch2/Ch3/Ch4/ALL).

• Sampling Freq: By pressing ON is possible to select sampling frequency of

the .wav file stored, availables frequencies are: 48KHz (standard DAT recording),
6KHz, 3KHz, 1.5KHz. Note that the bandwith of the recorded signal is half the
sampling frequency and the dimension of the recorded file is proportional to it. For
example the maximum dimension is achieved with 48KHz and 4 channel (ALL)
recording, full bandwith of 22KHz, with an average of 30Mbyte/min; minimal
recording is achieved with 1.5KHz and one channel, bandwith of 750Hz with an
average of 250Kbyte/min.

• Rec.During MEAS: By pressing ON is possible to select enable the recording

during other measures (such as LinRMS, VDV, Lafast, LaEq,. etc.). This feature
is available only for sampling frequencies lower than 12KHz; once enabled it is
possible to make other measures returning on Measure Start menu, the instrument
will record a measXXXX.wav and a measXXXX.adb in the same active session.

• Press I to RECORD: by pressing I an audio file is created and named

measXXXX.wav, where XXXX is the progressive numeration of the recordings;
this function is available only if Rec. During MEAS function is disabled (see 3.3
above). It is created only one file also in case of ALL channels recording, containing
all four channels raw data. During sound recording, an advice is displayed (”NOW
RECORDING”, see the following tree). When STOP (JM + N) is pressed,
the recording ends and file name, session name and recording time are displayed.

3.3.6 Trigger
Allows to configure trigger function. The Trigger is used to define trigger levels associated
with exceedance events. Instances where the measured level (dB or mm/s) exceeds the
user-defined trigger level, starts user-defined actions: to record event into .wav file and/or
generates an output signal from the auxiliary port (MiniDIN connector) see Par. 2.4.3.

• Trigg Channel: By pressing ON is possible to select the channel source

(Ch1/Ch2/Ch3/Ch4) for the trigger instances.

• Trigg Level: By pressing I is possible to set levels associated with exceedance

events, depending on the kind of measure (acoustic or vibrational) of the channel
choosen as Trigg Channel, user can define it in dB referred to the LAF , m/s or
m/s−2 referred to the LinRMS measure. The last two linear units depend from the
ponderation filter choosen: VEL10 generates a velocity measure and works in m/s
(or mm/s or um/s), while other filter works in m/s−2 (or mms−2 or ums−2 ).

• Level Unit: By pressing ON is possible to select the range of the threshold: ms−2 ,
mms−2 , ums−2 for VEL10 ponderation or m/s, mm/s, um/s for others ponderations.

USER MANUAL 8440, © F&V s.r.l. All rights reserved. — January 27, 2011
Setting and functions Measure Setting Page 33 of 61

This feature is available only if Trigg Channel is vibrational one, since if it’s acoustic
the unit is the dB, it don’t need to set the range.

• Wav recording: By pressing ON is possible to enable DAT recorder (see par.

3.3 above) as user-defined action managed by trigger level. Once instances where
the measured level (dB or mm/s) exceeds the trigger level the instruments will
generates .wav files. The length and the number of files depend by the Post Trigger
and Max Ev. Length parameters (see below).

• Trig Out Enable: By pressing ON is possible to enable a signal output from the
instrument as user-defined action managed by trigger level. Once instances where
the measured level (dB or mm/s) exceeds the trigger level the instruments will sets
high the Trigout pin of the Aux Port see 2.8.

• Post Trigger: By pressing ON is possible to select the post-trigger lenght

(2s/10s/30s/120s/inf) for the trigger instances. Once the level exceeds the trigger
level and the triggered state is entered, user-defined actions (for example .wav file
recording with DAT function) remain enabled for a minimum duration of Post
Trigger seconds after the signal returns under trigger level. Post Trigger settled to
inf means, once enabled, user-defined action holds active until the end of measure,
see Fig. 3.1.

• Max Ev. Length: By pressing ON is possible to select the single event maximum
length (30s/120s/inf) for the trigger instances. Once the level exceeds the trigger
level and the triggered state is entered, user-defined actions (for example .wav
file recording with DAT function) is enabled for a maximum duration of Max Ev.
Length seconds. Max Ev. Length settled to inf means, once enabled, user-defined
action holds active until the end of measure, see Fig. 3.1.

ADVICE

Minimun .wav file recording with DAT function is

achieved with Post Trigger=2s and Max Ev.
Length=30s. Maximum .wav file recording with
DAT function is achieved with Post Trigger=inf
and Max Ev. Length=inf.

Firmware Modules SLM Page 46 of 61

5.1 SLM
ACOUSTIC mode (sound level meter, see Appendix A.1.2):

• Averaging: Exponential RMS (Lxy), Max, Min, Leq (Linear RMS), CPeak;

Calculates the sound pressure level, as stated in Appendix; the time history logs
the instantaneous value of Lxy at the end of every buffer step. Leq calulates the
equivalent level of sound pressure, as stated Appendix. For every buffer step, one
value of Lxeqt is logged; a global value of Lxeq is also calculated for the whole
measure, when the measure stops (the totalLxeq for that measure). The M ax
(M in) value logs the maximum (minimum) value that Lxy assumes during all the
”present” buffer step. For every buffer step, one value of M ax (M in) is logged.
The M ax (M in) measure can be selected for the exponential RMS measures Lxy,
i.e. for AF ast, CF ast, ZF ast, ASlow, CSlow, ZSlow, AImpulse, CImpulse,
ZImpulse, but not for Leq; as stated in Appendix. The Cpeak for every buffer
step calculates the instantaneous maximum value of the C-weighted sound level.
A single global instantaneous value of C-weighted sound level is also calculated for
the whole measure, when the measure stops.

• Time constants: Fast, Slow, Impulse;

The time constant T b, as stated in Appendix can be 125ms (F ast) or 1s (Slow).

The Impulse time constant is implemented by a 35ms exponential RMS integrator
followed by a detector with time constant of 1.5s

• Frequency weighting: A, C, Z (linear);

The signal Cw(t), as stated in Appendix is the instantaneous sound pressure,

frequency weighted by the A or the C filter. The Z filter represents a linear filter.

• Compliance to standards: IEC61672

5.2 4th Channel

Enables fourth channel, that is the BNC connector, see 2.4.2. Enables for
this channel all funcionality available by other firmware modules (SLM , HV M ,
DAT Recording, etc).

USER MANUAL 8440, © F&V s.r.l. All rights reserved. — January 27, 2011
Firmware Modules Octave Band an. Page 47 of 61

5.3 Octave Band an.

Enables EN61260-Class0 octave bands and third octave bands spectrum analysis
on (up to) 4 channels, both for acoustic and vibration measures.

Acoustic mode
- 33 third octave bands or 11 octave bands spectrum decomposition (see Appendix
A.1.3 for EN61260 frequencies)
- Time constants: F ast, Slow, Impulse or Leq (Linear RMS, no time constant)
- No spectrum frequency weighting available. Spectrum analysis is always without
frequency weighting;
Note: the input signal is first filtered and subdivided in octave / third octave bands.
Then for every band is calculated the sound level by exponential RMS calculation
(for F ast, Slow, Impulse selection) or by the Linear RMS calculation (for Leq
selection).

Vibrational mode
- 45 third octave bands or 15 octave bands spectrum decomposition (see Appendix
A.1.3 for EN61260 frequencies)
- Time constants: 125ms, 1s, 2s, 5s, 8s, 10s;
- No spectrum frequency weighting available. Spectrum analysis is always without
frequency weighting;
Note: the input signal is first filtered and subdivided in octave / third octave
bands. Then for every band is calculated the acceleration level by exponential
RMS calculation (with the selected time constant).

5.4 Datalog
Since 8440 ’s basic configuration enables logging into Secure Digital™ of one
parameter per channel, Datalog module enables logging of all channel parameters
as time history on the Secure Digital™ card.

5.5 HVM
VIBRATIONAL mode (vibration level meter, see Appendix A.1.1):

• Averaging: Linear RMS, Peak, Max;

LinearRM S, like the Leq calculation in the sound level meter, stores one value of
acceleration level for each buffer step, and one global value of acceleration level for
the whole measure, as stated Appendix. P eak, like the C-peak in the sound level
meter, also the vibration level meter can measure the instantaneous peak value

USER MANUAL 8440, © F&V s.r.l. All rights reserved. — January 27, 2011
Firmware Modules BLD Page 48 of 61

of acceleration level, one for every buffer step, and one for the whole measure.
M ax, like the Max value in the sound level meter, the vibration Max measures
the maximum value of the signal during the exponential RMS calculation with the
specified time constant.

• Time constants: 125ms, 1s, 2s, 5s, 8s, 10s;

The time constant is more explicitly than sound level meter, the T b value, as
stated in Appendix.

• Frequency weighting filters: Wc, Wd, Wh, Wk, Wj

The signal Cw(t), as stated in Appendix A is the instantaneous sound pressure,

frequency weighted by the A or the C filter. The Z filter represents a linear filter.

• RMS parameters: MTVV, VDV, VTV (AwSUM), for vibration level meter

M T V V Maximum Transient Vibration Value Lxy calculation in the sound level

meter, stores one value of acceleration level for each buffer step as stated Appendix.
V DV Vibration Dose Value like the Lxy calculation in the sound level meter, stores
one value of acceleration level for each buffer step, V DV t, and one global value of
acceleration level for the whole measure, V DV , as stated Appendix.
AwSU M (that is V T V Vibration Total Value with Kx=Ky=Kz=1) the overall
value as stated Appendix, it is calculated at the end of each measure.

• Compliance to standards: ISO8041:2005, ISO2631-1 and ISO5394-1

5.6 BLD
Building Vibration: enables all Frequency Weighting Filters not availables into
HV M module, such as W b and W m .

Compliance to standards: ISO8041:2005, ISO2631-1 and ISO2631-2.

5.7 DAT
Enables recording of channel(s) into a single standard .W AV multichannel file; the
resolution is 24bit (with 24bit, 3 byte packing). Frequency sampling availables:
48KHz, 6KHz, 3KHz, 1.5KHz.

USER MANUAL 8440, © F&V s.r.l. All rights reserved. — January 27, 2011
Firmware Modules Predict Page 49 of 61

5.8 Predict

RMS Result

The RMS result, saved in the buffers file, is calculated according to the formula:
 Tb 1/2
1
Z
2
RMS = 20 log (cW (t)/p0 ) dt [dB] (A.15)
Tb 0

The RMS result is equivalent to LAF , LAS , LAI , LCF , LCS , LCI , LZF , LZS , LZI ,
according to EN 61672-1

SEL Result

The SEL result (Sound Exposure Level) is essentially the subset of the LEQ result. Its
value is equal to the LEQ result referred to the integration time equal to one second
(so, for the INT. TIME =1 s, SEL is always equal to LEQ). The value of the SEL is
calculated from the formula:
Z T 1/2
2
SEL = 20 log (rW (t)/p0 ) dt (A.16)
0

with T = 1 s
