The Center for Sepsis Control and Care (CSCC) at the University Hospital Jena, Germany, is a

young interdisciplinary research centre which investigates all aspects of sepsis-related clinical,
translational and fundamental research.

Within the Junior Research Group “Novel Diagnostic Tools for Culture-Independent Sepsis
Pathogen Detection” at the CSCC we are seeking a

Post-Doctoral Scientist (Physical Chemistry).

The position is available initially for 2 years starting from 1st March 2011, extension is possible and
desired.

You are highly motivated and have a strong scientific interest in biological and medical problems,
are creative when solving problems and looking for technical realization of new ideas. You have
profound experience in Raman spectroscopy of biological samples and are familiar with the
corresponding data analysis, including statistical methods and are able to write and modify scripts.
Knowledge in micro-fluidics, electronics and dielectrophoreses are an advantage. Proficiency in
English language and a good publication record are required.

We offer a diversified and interesting occupation in an attractive interdisciplinary research

environment as well as close interaction with scientists in other groups and institutes collaborating
in the CSCC. The aim of the Junior Research Group is to design and develop novel optical
methods for a fast and reliable diagnostic of pathogens for sepsis-associated infections by
investigating mechanisms of action of antibiotics on a molecular level. You will be responsible for
the design and realization of experiments. This will include cultivation of bacteria under different
conditions and their spectroscopic characterization with a special focus on Raman spectroscopy,
data analysis with the help of complex computer-assisted statistical methods and implementation
of the spectroscopic experiments into a micro-fluidic chip.
