DEFRAGING A HARD DRIVE
Suggested Frequency (Weekly)

This step-by-step guide describes how to perform maintenance on disk volumes on

Windows XP-based computers. Analyzing and defragmenting disks can help to preserve the
performance and general operation of the system. Although any user can gain access to
the Disk Defragmenter tool, the ability to analyze or defragment a volume requires
administrator privileges. To run the defragmentation operation, you must be logged on as
an administrator or as a member of the local Administrators group.

1. If the Disk Defragmenter tool is not already running, click Start, point to All Programs, point
to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
2. Click the volume that you want to defragment.
3. Click Defragment to begin the operation.
4. Review the progress of the operation in the Defragmentation Display window. Fragmented
files on the disk appear in red, contiguous files are blue, and system files are green. The
goal is to eliminate most of the red in the window. This may take a long time to execute.

COMPUTER MAINTENANCE

ADDING AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

1. A couple of things to do before introducing an external hard drive are as follow.

2. Changing the drive letter is necessary to avoid confusion if the external will be moved
around. Because windows will give an added device the next letter in the alphabet
automatically, it is recommended to change the drive letter of the external to something
lower in the alphabet. See (Changing a Drive Letter) instructions below for more
information.
3. Most external hard drives come as a FAT32 file system. To change this, open My Computer
then right-click on the drive. Select Format and change the format type to NTFS.
WARNING: any data previously entered will be deleted.

CHANGING A DRIVE LETTER

1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Administrative Tools.
3. Double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a

you want to use, and then click OK.
7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change.
8. The drive letter of the drive, the partition, or the volume that you specified is changed, and
the new drive letter appears in the appropriate drive, partition, or volume in the Disk
Management tool.

! The Local Disk or “C” drive

cannot be altered.
COMPUTER MAINTENANCE
ADDING DEVICES TO YOUR SYSTEM

1. When adding USB external hard drives or any device with a 1394/Firewire connection,
you need to be aware of a couple of things.
2. Each device that is to be used must have its own Bus Card. See illustration 1. A Device
can be a Firewire Canopus Converter or USB/Firewire External Hard Drive. Some cards on
the machine have more than one plug on the Bus Card. To make things run correctly you
can only connect one device per Bus Card. See illustration 1.
3. Some Bus Cards that come with the computer and are placed next to other devices. See
illustration 2. Sometimes you will see Firewire or USB plugs in these places. Be aware
that some machines share the same Bus Controller for the Front and Back plugs in these
cases.
4. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to call Tech Support for more Information.
