Safety Information

General Safety Information

• This radio meets the applicable safety standards if used as
prescribed. All operating and safety instructions are to be
followed carefully.
CAUTION! Before using this product, read the
operating instructions for safe usage contained in
the Product Safety and RF Exposure booklet,
Motorola Publication part number 6864117B25/
6866537D38 (for Europe, Middle East and Africa
regions) or 6804110J47/6804113J24 (for Asia
and Pacific regions), enclosed with your radio.

Safety Information
• Motorola recommends the usage of Motorola approved
accessories only.
• Only specialized workshops should be contacted for ser-
vice and repair of your radio.
• Keep this User Guide and the Product Safety and RF
Exposure booklet in a safe place and make it available to
other operators, and in case, that the radio is passed on to
other people.

1
Product Specific Information
• Max. RF Power 1 Watt
• Rated Audio 500 mWatts
• Antenna Impedance 50 Ohms
• Ambient Temperature Range -30 °C to + 60 °C
(except LiIon Battery
and LCD)
• Operating Time Continuous/Intermittent
In general, the radio transmit and receive time (operating cycle time) is deter-
mined by the communication system. On overload, respectively on extensive
use beyond the systems specifications at high temperatures, the radio is pro-
tected by its thermal control, which cuts down the RF output power, thus
reducing the radio coverange range.

Before Powering ON the MTP750

Charging the Battery
The MTP750 range of batteries are all IMPRES™ Smart
capable (see below for more information). For battery
charging, see the User Guide that accompanies the IMPRES
Smart Charger.
IMPRES is an acronym for “Intelligent Motorola Portable Radio Energy Sys-
tem”.

Battery Maintenance
The performance of the rechargeable battery delivered with
your MTP750 depends on the way the battery is treated.
Therefore, to comply with the Motorola warranty for batteries
and to assure high performance and a long life cycle of your
Motorola rechargeable battery, please read and follow the
maintenance rules stated below.
The IMPRES Smart Batteries are part of an advanced
energy system which encompass the battery, the charger
and the radio within an intelligent battery maintenance
system. This system is developed to maximise the operation
time between charging, and reduces the need for additional
battery maintenance tasks or equipment.

4
Use of non approved chargers will reduce the battery life and
invalidate the battery warranty.

Storage
New batteries (i.e. batteries that have never been charged
before) may be stored in well ventilated, cool and dry areas
without significant loss in life cycle. The MTP750 batteries
have a storage life of
• Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) up to 2 years.
• Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) up to 4 years.
New NiMH batteries require a full overnight charge of 14 - 16
hours to recover from prolonged storage. Li-Ion batteries
require no special charging to recover from storage. Contact
Motorola for full specifications.

Extending Battery Life

A battery is a wearing part and may need replacing during
the life of the radio. To ensure maximum service life of your
radio, always replace the battery with a genuine Motorola
replacement.
In order to ensure maximum life from your battery, do not
place the radio and/or battery in the charger, unless you
really want to charge the battery.
The IMPRES batteries and charging system are developed to
provide maximum life through use of an adaptive charging
cycle. The charger periodically performs a re-condition cycle
on the battery and updates the stored data. The battery and
charger exchange data each time the battery is inserted into Getting Started
the charger, causing the charger to apply the correct
charging routine.

Battery Charging Temperature

Ordinary chargers only charge your battery effectively when
it is at room temperature (approx. 20 ˚C). Charging a battery
below -5 ˚C and above +40 ˚C will reduce the life of your
battery.

5
The IMPRES Batteries and Chargers both contain
temperature measuring capability, and will control charging
and re-conditioning operations in line with the temperature
limits. Charging batteries below -5 ˚C and above +40 ˚C is
prevented.

First Time Battery Charging

To ensure optimal performance, Motorola recommends all
new batteries be left in the charger 14 to 16 hours prior to
initial use. The IMPRES system uses this first time charge as
a calibration for the Radio Battery Strength indication.

Battery Charging Rules

The IMPRES Charging System adapts the charging profile to
the condition of the battery. This means the effects of bad
practices, such as not fully discharging a battery before
recharging, are reduced to a minimum.
Do NOT use your radio while it is in the charger. This can
result in your radio being temporarily inoperable. This
condition can be cleared by removing the radio, turning it off,
and then turning it on again.
Battery Status
The Battery Status or “fuel gauge icons” show the charging
progress of the battery. This icon is displayed when your
MTP750 is in the charger, or in an approved vehicle kit. Refer
to the figures below for details.

Getting Started
Selecting your Network
Before you start operating your MTP750, you can select the
network you want your MTP750 to be registered to. For
detailed information, see “Networks” on page 92.

How to Hold your MTP750

For calls emitted from the earpiece, hold your MTP750 close
to the ear.

9
When placing or receiving a call in Low Audio mode, hold
your MTP750 as you would a telephone.
Speak directly into the microphone which is located towards
the bottom of the MTP750.
To transmit, hold MTP750 in a vertical position
with its microphone 2.5 to 5.0 centimetres away
from your mouth. Keep antenna at least 2.5
centimetres from your head and body.

Looking After your MTP750

Never leave your MTP750 or battery in extreme temperatures
(over 60 °C)—for example, behind glass in very hot, direct
sunlight. Do not immerse your MTP750 radio in water.
When your MTP750 is exposed to rain, water may collect in
the microphone hole at the bottom of the radio. This can
temporarily degrade the transmitted speech quality. Once the
water is removed from the microphone hole, the degradation
disappears. Remove the water from the microphone hole by
tapping the bottom end of the radio with your hand, or by
blowing into the microphone hole.
Never use any sharp objects to remove the water, as this may dam-
age the microphone or sealing.

To clean your MTP750, use a moistened or antistatic cloth.

DO NOT use a dry or electrostatically charged cloth.

Key Overview
The Mode Key ( )
The MTP750 has four major call modes when operating in
Trunked Mode:
• Group mode — to send and receive Group Calls.
• Private mode — to send and receive Private Calls.
• Phone mode — to send and receive Phone Calls.
• PABX mode — to send and receive local (office) extension
numbers calls.
Your Service Provider can configure your MTP750 such that
Group mode is the home mode to which your MTP750
returns automatically when there is no activity for a few
seconds in another mode or in the menu.
Group mode can operate either in Trunked Mode Operation
(TMO) or Direct Mode Operation (DMO). In TMO, the
MTP750 is used with the infrastructure services within
system coverage. In DMO, the MTP750 is used without
infrastructure services required, i.e. directly from radio to
radio(s) when out of system coverage.
A DMO radio can communicate with the trunking system (and
vice-versa) through a gateway device. To use that feature,
please enable the gateway option in your MTP750 (see
“Making a DMO Group Call via Gateway” on page 70).
It is only possible to place group calls and emergency group calls in
DMO.

If configured by your Service Provider, your MTP750 will
display an internal Home Mode Display until another Getting Started
message is received.

Radio Disable/Enable
Your MTP750 is provided with a feature that allows your
Service Provider to disable it temporarily (in case it is stolen
or lost).
When your MTP750 is disabled, no calls can be initiated or
received.

21
While your MTP750 is disabled, it will display
the following screen:
Your MTP750 will act like it is turned off.
If you try to turn your MTP750 on, when it is
disabled, it will operate as described above.
If your MTP750 is found, your Service Provider can re-enable
it. After your MTP750 is re-enabled, you may resume normal
operation.

Receiving Calls
Your Service Provider can configure your MTP750 to receive
a call in one of the following modes:
• Auto Mode Switch: The MTP750 will automatically switch
to the mode of the incoming call. Additionally, if Auto Mode
Revert is enabled, the MTP750 returns automatically to
the mode it was in before the incoming call arrived, after
that call ends.
• Manual Mode Switch: The MTP750 will alert you of an
incoming call. Press the successively until you enter
the mode of the incoming call, and press PTT to answer
the call. If Auto Mode Switch is disabled, your MTP750
does not switch to the mode of the incoming call. The
incoming call is considered pending, until you answer the
call, or release the call, or the call is released by the initiat-
ing party or by the system.
The manner your MTP750 alerts you of an incoming call
depends on the settings selected for the Vibrate menu option
(see page 83) and the Tones menu option (see page 89).

Busy User Pre-emption (BUP)

A console operator in the system might wish to call you while
you are in an on-going call (private, phone, PABX).
The console operator will activate the BUP feature to

22
interrupt and pre-empt your call.
BUP Invocation also pre-empts a call in process of being set up.
The call in setup must be a private, phone or PABX call.

The console operator will then try to set up a private call with
you, within a pre-determined period of time after successful
call pre-emption.
Only emergency calls are allowed within a pre-determined period of
time after successful call pre-emption (during BUP wait state).

Preemptive Calling
Preemptive calling is particularly useful when you need to
speak urgently with a user whose portable is busy in a non-
emergency voice call.
A preemptive priority call (PPC) is either an Emergency
Group Call or a Private PPC (half-duplex or full-duplex call).
The feature allows to disconnect the on-going lower priority
call to connect to the incoming higher priority call.
The Service Provider configures the priority of the PPC. Its
highest priority is emergency priority.
To place a PPC, see the Emergency mode and Private mode
sections in the user guide.
The MTP750 will receive the call via speaker or earpiece,
according to the setting used when the PPC is received.
For call alert, see settings in the Vibrate menu option (page 83) and
the Tones menu option (page 89). Getting Started
Receiving a PPC is explained in the following paragraphs.
In the following screens <Any> in Use refers to any of the non-
emergency voice calls: Group, Private, Phone, or PABX.

Ambience Listening (AL)

This feature, if enabled by your Service Provider, allows a
console operator or dispatcher to establish a special call with
a specific MTP750 to monitor voice activity in the local
vicinity. The call is set up without any indication to the
affected MTP750, and any lower priority ongoing voice call or
packet data transfer may be pre-empted.
After accepting the call, the MTP750 transmits in a half-
duplex Private call without any action from or indication to the
user. The Ambience Listening call shall automatically end
when the user initiates any voice call and uses the radio
normally.

Local Area Service

This mode, also called Fallback Mode, allows more than one
radio from the same site to communicate when the link
between the site and network central controller fails. Entering
and exiting Local Area Service (that is, returning to System
Wide Services) is done automatically.

Entering Local Area Service

When the MTP750 receives a Local Area Service indication
from the system, the following occurs:
• the MTP750 sounds a tone
• the display shows the “Local Area Service” message

26
• any call in progress is dropped upon entering Local Area
Service mode.
If configured by your Service Provider, this message/alert is
periodically repeated to remind you that the MTP750 is still
operating in Local Area Service mode.
The following features are available while the MTP750 is in
Local Area Service:
• Registration
• Attachment
• Group Call
• Emergency Group Call
• Emergency Alarm

Exiting Local Area Service

When the link with the central network controller is re-
established, the MTP750 exits Local Area Service and the
following occurs:
• the MTP750 sounds a tone
• any call in progress during Local Area Service is dropped.

Group Call

A Group Call is an instant communication between you and

others in a talkgroup that you select. Participants may join
(late entry) and leave an on-going group call. A talkgroup is a
pre-defined set of subscribers enabled to participate in and/
or invoke a Group Call, that is set up by your Service
Provider.
Talkgroups appear on your display as names or numbers (for
example: Sales, Service, Electricians, Talkgrp10).
Talkgroups are divided into ranges. Each range may contain
several talkgroups.
For ease of use, your MTP750 radio (continuous-rotary
model only) also provides the ability to perform an
alphabetical search of the talkgroup aliases, besides the

Group Call
ability to scroll through the entire talkgroup list using the
talkgroup knob.
Your talkgroups may be organized into scan lists (set up by
your Service Provider, or by yourself through the Menu).
When you activate one of these scan lists, your MTP750 will
continuously monitor the activities of the selected talkgroups.
By assigning priorities to the talkgroups defined in the scan
list, you will be capable of accepting calls that have higher
priority than the on-going call.
Each talkgroup may have one associated Announcement
Talkgroup (ATG) that your MTP750 monitors (if set up by
your Service Provider).
An ATG is a special group which is linked to a number of
talkgroups and has the highest priority level, thus enabling
broadcast of the call to all these talkgroups.
When an ATG is selected, the scanning icon is not displayed.
The MTP750 monitors the ATG scan list instead of the
selected scan list. The ATG scan list contains all the
talkgroups associated with a selected ATG. Your Service

39
Provider should advise what talkgroups are associated with
which Announcement Talkgroup.
Your MTP750 will always monitor the group calls in the ATG
scan list. To place an Announcement Call, you must first
select the specified Announcement Talkgroup as advised by
your Service Provider, otherwise you will only be able to
participate when an Announcement Talkgroup is received.
Activation and deactivation of talkgroup scanning has no
effect on the ATG scan list.

Transmit Inhibit
You should activate the Transmit Inhibit (TXI) Mode before
entering RF sensitive areas, e.g. hospitals, airplanes, etc.,
where safety can be jeopardized due to radio transmission
radiation.
Radiation of the MTP750 is ONLY suppressed, if TXI Mode is
activated or the MTP750 is separated from power supply.

This mode can only be activated in Group Mode. In Transmit

Inhibit Mode, the MTP750 will not transmit under any
circumstances, except for the Emergency Group Call, which
can be initiated even if the MTP750 is in TXI Mode.
All MTP750 functions and keys which cause transmission,
e.g. registration to the network, change of talkgroup or range,
sending messages, pressing PTT, etc., are disabled. In this
case, the display shows “Not Allowed In TXI Mode” and the

Group Call
MTP750 sounds the “Transmit Inhibit” tone.
When no danger to safety exists anymore (for instance, if you
leave the RF sensitive area), the Transmit Inhibit mode can
be deactivated, and the MTP750 returns to normal operation.
Setting the TXI Mode is described in “Selecting Transmit
Inhibit (TXI) Mode” on page 94.
You can also use a preprogrammed option button (if
programmed by your Service Provider) to activate or deactivate
the TXI Mode. You must press and hold the key for a while.

This operation is performed by transmitting the data into your
MTP750.
Your Service Provider can gather some Talkgroups under one
Super-group and transmit it to your MTP750 as a DGNA. In such
a case, you will be able to participate in calls to/from all the
groups in the Super-group.
