FROM THE PULPIT
“Jesus took Peter, James and John up the mountain and there he was
transfigured before them and his face shone like the sun.” Matthew 17:1-2
The Super Bowl is the climax of a long NFL football season. Here are some football terms that church people
might understand...
COIN TOSS- to decide who comes out first the priest or the acolyte.
PENALTY- when an acolyte fails to light a candle.
SAFETY- when the Eucharistic lay leader is trapped behind the communion rail.
DELAY OF GAME- any sermon that goes over 15 minutes (also called SUDDEN DEATH).
PASS- what we do with the offering plates (INCOMPLETE PASS is when the plates don't make it all the way
down the pew).
STAY IN THE POCKET- what happens to a lot of money when the offering plates are passed.
RED ZONE- sitting within 20 feet of strong perfume or cologne.
ILLEGAL MOTION- any teenager going to the restroom more than twice during worship.
FIRST DOWN- the first person back to the guild hall for refreshments.
DEFENDING THE GOAL- making sure no one sits in your pew.
TWO MINUTE WARNING- what dad gives you when you misbehave (also the BENEDICTION).
DRAW PLAY- what many youngsters (and adults) do on the bulletin.
BLITZ- the stampede for the door after worship.
TOUCHDOWN- when you come back to church next Sunday (EXTRA POINT- bringing someone new to
church with you!)
The TRANSFIGURATION is the climax of the Epiphany Season. This is THE confirmation
that Jesus is the very Son of God. Jesus takes his special friends up a mountain to pray and there
his face shines like the sun and his clothes are glowing white. God confirms that this is my
Son...listen to him. Have you been listening to the Son of God lately? The best place to do that is
in worship on Sunday morning. Hopefully, like the disciples, you will have a mountaintop
experience when you worship.
All of us need those times when we can glimpse the glorious. We need those times of soul
searching, times of spiritual renewal, times of sensing the very presence of God. We need those
mountaintop times when God gives us direction and mission both in our personal lives and the
lives of our churches. Come to worship and feel the TRANSFIGURATION.
