Spatially Enabling Government Information

What is it?
Spatial Enabling involves the referencing of any item of
data or information to its location

Examples might include:

• Information about road accidents is referenced to the

geographical point at which the accident occurred
• Information about a road asset and its use is referenced to a line
representing the road and points along that line
• Information about people is referenced to the defined area or
point at which they live or work
• Information about objects, people and events is referenced to
the same location point, for example by using street address

Why Do It?
“Everything Happens Somewhere”

Now consider the questions:

Where did it happen?

What else is around there?
Why did it happen here?
What effect did it have?
Is there a pattern over time?
Why does a policy work here but not over there?

Location provides enhanced information for policy as well as operational

matters

Why Do It?
• Enables any kind of information, irrespective of medium, to be easily
integrated

• Enables new information to be captured with built-in aggregation,

integration and validation capabilities

• Enables information to be more easily analysed over time – policy

development and monitoring

• Supports systems / business process integration and interoperability

• Provides the value-add of map presentation and visualisation
