How to change MAC Address

a. Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Network and


Dial-up Connections.
b. Right click on the NIC you want to change the MAC address and click on
properties.
c. Under “General” tab, click on the “Configure” button
d. Click on “Advanced” tab
e. Under “Property section”, you should see an item called “Network
Address” or "Locally Administered Address", click on it.
f. On the right side, under “Value”, type in the New MAC address you want
to assign to your NIC. Usually this value is entered without the “-“
between the MAC address numbers.
g. Goto command prompt and type in “ipconfig /all” or “net config rdr” to
verify the changes. If the changes are not materialized, then use the
second method.
h. If successful, reboot your systems.

Change the Message Shown on the Logon Box

CurrentVersion\Winlogon. Value Name: LogonPrompt, Data Type:
REG_SZ (String Value). Create a new string value named 'LogonPrompt'
and enter the text you want to display. The default message is: 'Enter a
user name and password that is valid for this system.' This feature can be
used in conjunction with the Legal Notice Dialog Box Before Logon
tweak.
Change the Title of Windows Media Player

Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\
WindowsMediaPlayer. Value Name: TitleBar, Data Type: REG_SZ
(String Value). Create a new string value called "TitleBar" and set it to the
text you would like display in the title. Restart Media Player for the

Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it
NoRecentDocsMenu.
Double-click and enter 1 as value. To restore the Documents menu,
reverse the steps by changing 1 to 0 or delete DWORD value.

Remove Find from Start Menu


If you already have a better search program and want to disable the
one in the Start Menu, here's how to remove it.

Launch the registry editor.

Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it
NoFind.
Double-click and enter 1 as value. Note: This will also disable the Find
under Explorer and won't respond to the F3 key. To restore the Log Off
User option, reverse the steps by changing 1 to 0 or delete DWORD
value.
Lock Icons on Desktop
You have arranged your desktop to look nicely with your wallpaper. Presently comes
someone and mess up the nice arrangement. To lock your desktop icons into place,
first arrange it carefully the way you want it to be, then open up the registry editor.
Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Polici
es\Explorer. Right-click in the right pane and select New, DWORD Value name
NoSaveSettings and press the Enter key. Right-click on the new NoSaveSettings
item and select Modify. Enter 1 in the Value data box. After this, whenever you
restart Windows, your settings will return to their current state.

Wallpaper Position
Windows 95 with Plus installed and Windows 98 offer 2 ways to align your wallpaper
- "Center" or "tiled" and "Stretch to fit the desktop". However, there is an
undocumented way to align your wallpaper at any position by specifying X and Y
coordinates.

Fire up your registry editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control


Panel\Desktop. Create 2 new strings and call them WallpaperOriginX and
WallpaperOriginY respectively With the keys now up, just set the value along
coordinate X and Y to position your wallpaper in pixels.

Change Cursor Blink Rate


Is your cursor blinking too fast or too slow? Or you want to set the cursor to "no
blinking"? Then we have just the solution for you. Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop\ On the right had pane, search
for a string value called CursorBlinkRate. If the string value is not present, create on
with the name CursorBlinkRate. Modify, numeric value to the required speed. We are
not so sure of the default value, maybe between 200-400. But we do know that if
you set the value to -1, the cursor won't blink at all! Note: This setting only apply on
text or word processors, Explorer and Windows apps only. It won't effect the MS-
DOS mode box cursor.

Create Your Own Welcome Tips


If you are afraid that you will forget the tips you have already learnt, you can store
them as welcome tips. Open up the registry editor and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\explorer\tips\. The tips themselves are stored there. There are 49 tips in
whole but you can assign more. Next, use your text editor and set it to word wrap.
Remember not to press Enter, just let the editor wrap the text. Continue typing until
you finished your tip. Turn off word wrap to make the tip into one straight line of
text. Copy it out and paste it on the location where the tips are stored. You can back
them up as a reg file so that you can share them with your friends.
Display A Logon Text Banner
If you are using multiple logon, you might want to create a banner-like text caption
dialog upon logon.

Crank up your registry editor and go to


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\W
inLogon (Windows 9x) or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\Winlogin (Windows NT)
Create a new string value called LegalNoticeCaption and what you type as the
value will appear as the menu menu bar caption. Create another string value called
LegalNoticeText and again, the value of this string will appear as the caption ot the
dialog box

Now this banner will appear whenever anyone logon to the computer. It can be used
to include some information on the computer as well as warnings or reminders.

Customize Internet Explorer's Title Bar


Want to change IE's title caption as well? Open up the registry editor and scroll to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.
Create a new string value on the right-pane named Window Title ( note that there
is a space between "Window" and "Title" unlike OE which doesn't have a space in
between ). Change the value to the new name for the title caption. Restart to take
effect.

Changing CD-ROM Drive Letters


Select the drive from the device list in the Device Manager, and click Properties. A
property sheet opens containing a property page that shows the drive letters
available for this device. For a CD-ROM drive, you can alter the range of possible
drive letters (for example, E: through H:).

The drive letters used by a particular controller are stored in the drive controller's
subkey of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum branch. Each of these subkeys contains
the CurrentDriveLetterAssignment value set to the name of the assigned drives The
assignment of a drive letter to a specific piece of hardware involves vendor-specific
information, so you need detailed advice from the vendor about how to change a
drive letter.

The AutolnsertNotiftcation value controls Windows notification regarding whether a


CD-ROM is inserted into a drive. A value of 01 enables notification.
