DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT/JTION
December I7,2010
Route 67 (Oxford Road), in the subject area, is an east/west, two lane.bidirectional roadway
approximately 30 feet wide. The posted speed limit is 35 mph with 85ft percentile speeds of 43 and 47
mph in the eastbound and westbound directions, respectively.
Governor's Hill Road, is a north/south, two lane, bidirectional town owned and maintained
roadway. Governor's Hill Road intersects Route 67 from the south forming a t{ype intersection.
Governor's Hill Road is stop controlled with illumination at the intersection of Route 67.
The Department's latest available three-year accident experience from January l, 2006 to
December 31, 2008 indicated a total of six accidents. Of the six collisions, four were rear end type. Two
of these rear end type collisions involved vehicles traveling westbound on Route 67, one of which
involved a vehicle waiting to turn left into Governor's Hill Road. The other two rear end collisions were
on the eastbound approach of Route 67, with one involving a right tumer into Governor's Hill Road. A
turn intersecting path type accident involving a left turner from Governor's Hill Road and a through
moving vehicle on Route 67 was recorded along with a turning opposite direction type accident involving
a westbound left turner and an eastbound through moving vehicle. The number of these accidents is not
considered significant when compared to similar locations throughout the state. None of these accidents
are of the type that the frequency of which may be reduced by the installation of a traffic signal.
The intersection sight distances from Governor's Hill Road from a l5-foot setback
along Route
67 were measured to be 600 feet and 615 feet to the west and east, respectively. These
distances are
considered adequate for the prevailing speeds on Route 67. The stopping
sight iistance on Route 67 is
450 feet. That distance is also considered adequate for the prevailing sp."ar
on Route 67.
A field review indicated that intersection warning signs are located on both the eastbound and
the
westbound approaches to the intersection of Governor's Hill Road. The signs
will be upgraded to better
Plrtray the existing geometric conditions. The signing will be accomplished by the Department's Office
of Maintenance as scheduling permits.
